“An anonymous tipster tells TUAW that according to code found in the latest firmware release, Apple is working on a new iPhone application called iControl,” Erica Sadun reports for The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW).
“Like Apple TV and other remote controllers, it would allow the iPhone to connect wirelessly to local iTunes libraries and browse through and play media from those sources,” Sadun reports.
“TUAW is told that a media navigator will allow you to view videos, play podcasts, listen to music and even support shuffle playback,” Sadun reports.

Very nice indeed.
We slowly crawl towards the realization of so many SNL Apple/Jobs sketches…..
So the iPhone could not already do this?
You can not use a shared itunes library using the iphone within a LAN?
Weird. This should have been standard and is about damn time.
This will rock my airtunes setup
Powermac G5>Airport Express>toslink cable>Apogee Mini-DAC>Musical Fidelity A3.2>Totem Rainmakers
Now I won’t need the laptop or the G5 anymore, just the iPod Touch in my hand! Yarrrrrrr!
Sorta like Remote Buddy on iPhone which has been around for a while… cool.
it’ll be a super remote for Apple TV and airtunes-playin’ iTunes, eh? i wonder when they’ll activate that feature. they can’t give us ALL of this goodness all at once, can they (sdk 2.0, 3g, gps, haptics, jabber support, iController…)? what will they do to spur a Christmas rush? my guess is they’ll parcel it out over the last half of the year.
i just hope they replace the g radio with an n…
about friggin’ time.
Worthless.
No one needs to connect to an iTunes library via their iPhone at home or anywhere else. Whats the point? People will use their computer to manage and play their music at home, and no one is dumb enough to watch movies at home on their iPhone.
Flush this idea down the commode
I would occasionally watch a missed show at home on my iPhone when I sit outside and enjoy the weather. Or when we have hurricane power outages for sure.
It seems to me that in a hurricane, you’d want to save your power for emergencies…
@c
I don’t know about that; you were dumb enough to write what you did. The only thing worthless is your opinion, so spare us all from it; or better yet, dump it in a port-o-pot.
Here it is fanbois! More evidence that OS X does run using off the shelf parts.

Yep, Mac users, yer paying for the packaging, not anything more.
The Invasion of the Clones is being superseded by the Invasion of the Frankenmacs. It’s ALIVE, it’s ALIVE.
Steve Jobs: Damn it, where’s my torch and pitchfork?
@c
Maybe it will also allow you to play songs from other nearby iPhones – Welcome to the Social – no squirting allowed
@ u kant…
From the article: “…but Software Update won’t recognize it so you won’t be able to patch. “
Yeah… that’s what we all want, an OS that u kant patch.
That psystar machine is soooo not ready for prime time.
About time… This is something that’s driven me nuts. Why can’t I see all the shared local iTunes libraries and WAN them to my iPhone like I would any other computer? Same thing with iPhoto.
@c HA you are funny. This is actually a pretty smooth idea. I listen to my iPhone at work with my earphones on so I can walk around listening to music and not have to be tethered to my computers headphones. Say I have 100gb of music on my work computer, but I cant be AT my computer. I can shuffle all my music from my iPhone. It would be even better if it can stream internet radio stations from iTunes too. This essentially makes my iPhone storage unlimited as long as I have access my local network or better yet, a wireless internet radio device. I think its an excellent idea. Sure its not very usefull outside the local network, but shite, what cha want
iControl name is already used for a Mac related product.

Wow, the iPhone is not even out a single year, and everyone bitches and moans that “it’s about time”. Hello, McFly! What other phone gives you regular feature updates? What a bunch of whiny babies.
Lest the “Tunes” in iTunes loose any more meaning. Oops…syntax error!
Hey LiM,
Watch out your syntax is showing… …lose…
There are a couple of Web Apps that already do this, but they are a little slow and shaky… There are also Jailbroken apps that do it as well, but much smoother than the Web Apps. I saw a demo of one on Youtube that showed a guy controlling slider bars in Logic (I think it was Logic, or maybe some other sound editing app).
It’s going to be awesome to eventually control my Apple TV with my iPhone. All the previews and chapter info, etc. displayed on the remote (iPhone). Sweet.
What about a non local network, all your music, videos etc anywhere there is wifi. Over the internets. I tend to listen to my iPhone away from my computer, kinda the point.
