Appel today released Firmware Restoration CD 1.7 which can restore the firmware of an Intel-based Macintosh computer.
Note: Restoring your firmware will reset some of your computer’s preferences to defaults.
You can only use this to restore the firmware after an interrupted or unsuccessful update. If your computer is already in this state, you’ll need to download the software and create the CD on another Macintosh computer, or you can take your computer to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to restore your firmware. This CD can be created on either a PowerPC- or Intel-based Mac, but only works with Intel-based Macs.
Note: This CD cannot be used to return an Intel-based Macintosh computer’s firmware to a previous version if a successful update has already been performed.
Different computers use different versions of the Restoration CD. Please reference the table below to determine if this version of the Firmware Restoration CD is correct for your machine. If you do not see your computer in this table you may need Firmware Restoration CD 1.4:

Silly question: Do Macs still have “PRAM”? Or did that go away when Macs lost the ability to boot into Classic?

It’s nice to know that even if one screws up the firmware update process royally, there is always a way to resurrect it.

I suppose this won’t reset the DVD player so you have 5 region changes left?

Thanks mate. Frankly, after last week’s firmware update (where it took several days for the computer to settle down ) I’ll be staying away from any future firmware updates unless they’re absolutely necessary.

any hope that this is finally solve my battery issue with my MacBook? It will die after 30 minutes regardless of how much charge is shows that it has.

If your battery isn’t that old and this, therefore, is not expected behavior, then let your MacBook battery run all the way down until it sleeps. Let it sit over night until it completely dies. Then charge it up until fully charged and then some (ie. keep plugged in despite a full charge for a few more hours). Hopefully this little bit of battery conditioning will help. If it doesn’t, try taking the battery out and putting it back in. Look at the connections to make sure there isn’t crap on them.
I have a new 24″ iMac and I have had issues: stuck on gray screen, stuck on blue screen, etc. To remedy, I have reinstalled system software from original disks. That is not too bad, but then I have to update all the software using software update. Does this restoration disk eliminate the update part? Is this something worth downloading and having available?
