“Following a storm of criticism, Apple has changed its Software Update software to mark a distinction between new programs, such as its Safari on Windows browser, and updates to existing ones,” Martin LaMonica blogs for CNET.
LaMonica reports, “Last month, Apple started to include Safari 3.1 in a list of applications available from its Software Update program.”

LaMonica continues, “That practice got many people riled up, complaining that Apple was essentially deceiving people into installing a new program–Safari 3.1 for Windows XP–through a program meant to update already installed applications, namely iTunes and QuickTime… Now, Apple’s Software Update has two separate boxes, one labeled “New Software” and the other labeled “Updates.” Before Safari 3.1 was under the “Updates” box and there was no “New Software” heading.”

It served its purpose. More people know that Safari for Windows exists because of the so-called “controversy” and the free publicity offered by people like Martin LaMonica.

Like so many other people have pointed out, if you don’t want it simply uncheck it. What is so difficult to understand about that??? …..oh, yeah, they’re Winblows users, I forgot!!
Apple needs to create a “badge” program like Firefox had, so that webmasters can easily add a “Get Safari” button to there webpages. This would be in keeping with their “Made on a Mac” and “Powered by Mac” badges. For examples, scroll to the very bottom of this page.
Windows users are sheep. They click without thinking. If the dialog box said “Formatting hard drive. Please click OK to continue.”, they would click OK.

My post to CNET. Just rubbing it in a little.
Great job Apple. Keep it on the front burner. Infiltrate Microsoft a
little bit every day. One day they’ll wake up and order a Mac.
Welcome to my world. Now begin to live a little.
Isn’t Safari fast?
iTunes Rules….
Baaah,
Yeah, but it doesn’t mean Apple should act like a wolf. This is what I would expect from a company that is NOT a good corporate citizen…like Microsoft.
So what?
He must have ran out of stuff to bitch about this morning.
Maybe if Safari had known Rev. Wright, it would be in the news 24-7……
Why didn’t they just do it that way before? It would’ve saved them from looking like jerks and then looking slightly incompetent.
On Windows you usually get an alert AFTER new software HAS BEEN installed.
You only need to restart. And you’d better do that, otherwise you get nagged every 5 minutes.
At least Apple has the guts to admit they were wrong and make the necessary changes to correct it.
I always thought this was a little overblown. If you just paid attention to what you were installing, no one would have been “fooled”. It’s called personal responsibility.
I’d like to see MS respond to anything with the speed and agility that apple can, even over trivial issues such as this.
Come on TT! This thread is moving along nicely here – nothing to see in TT’s post. Move along….
@Cubert
“If you just paid attention to what you were installing, no one would have been “fooled”. It’s called personal responsibility.”
The attention should be paid one step earlier. The trouble of deselecting installation packages you don’t want can easily be avoided: Never install anything from an untrusted source. If you can’t trust Apple will behave in a way you think is ok, don’t let them in your computer in the first place. It’s called personal responsibility.
There’s no right or wrong, it’s just a matter of personal opinion.
I want defaulted installation of new software > get itunes
I don’t want defaulted installation of new software > don’t get iTunes
Ignorant.
Maybe this will shut the goddam Windows Whiners’ pie holes.
It’ll ALSO, most importantly, make them see that Apple actually LISTENS to complaints and does what it can to alleviate problems… unlike certain innovatively monopolistic software developers.

That was a play on the media and the “controversy”, not politics.
Speaking of ‘media’ and ‘controversy’, I read somewhere that you had a small part in a movie……” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
Don’t be silly. Didn’t you hear how Rev. Wright uses Safari? Apparently it’s the only browser with a “black enough name”.
Some Mac Apologist don’t understand simple English. Apple UPDATE shouldn’t install new software.
Regardless of what you personally feel, Apple is in the wrong.
If the iPod was MS iPod and you call had MS iTunes which had the MS Update Service, would you be annoyed if MS Explorer came as an Update? Deceptively shown as an update, and checked?
Congratulations to Apple for doing the classy thing, the right thing – even if a little belated.
@TT,
See my post on the iPhone inventory clearing thread.
And, it wasn’t a small part.

A few questions.
When working 6 to 9, to you get the urge to say things like “The end is near” or “Thar she blows”?
And when face painting, maybe “here comes the sludge”?
Just wondering if y’all had “out takes” like DVDs, so to speak.
I think this is a good idea for both Windoze & Mac users.
Was it evil in the first place? No.
Was it kinda shifty? Sure! Self serving too!
Now it’s fixed. Can we please move on to something else now?
How about that wireless bug in Leopard?
Just my 2¢
