Hon Hai plans to ship at least 10 million 3G Apple iPhones

“Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world’s largest contract electronics maker, plans to ship at least 10 million third-generation iPhones for Apple Inc., a person familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires,” Wei Yi reports for Dow Jones.

“The person, who declined to be named, said Apple will likely launch the new generation iPhone as early as the second quarter,” Yi reports. “‘Hon Hai is ready to ship anytime. It is just waiting for the nod from Apple,’ said the person.”

“Last week, another person familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires that Hon Hai had received an exclusive contract to make an advanced version of the iPhone,” Yi reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Yeah, but, “When?!” What’s the timeframe for shipping these 10 million iPhones? Ship ’em all in 2008? Ship ’em all in Q3 2008, with another 10 million shipments planned for Q4 08? Ship half this year and save half for 2009? Just asking, that’s all.

  1. When is a good question. I have a friend visiting Apple stores in Florida trying to buy one for me in Canada. The stores he’s been visiting are out of stock. I’ve read that New York stores are out of stock. The demand is building but no phones. Apple needs to deliver soon!

  2. today is the opening of CTIA, the cell phone industry trade show. since no apple announcement has occurred today, the most likely date looks to be June 9, at the keynote of the WWDC. Of course, apple could have a special event…

Actually, they will be SECOND-generation iPhones with a 3G chip. But of course, no one will find this difficult to understand, and it will always translate from asian trade news properly.

Good God MDN !! Who cares. At least promise me one thing. Try and get at least some small bit of life this summer. Maybe actually go outside and try to get a little sun or heaven help us all….maybe even meet a guy or something. Think about it…who cares what quarter they all come out in. Enjoy your computers but try and do it without sacrificing that stupid little thing that we like to call LIFE !!
    Have mercy on me.

  5. Don’t these have to go through the FCC first? I would think we would see it there around 2 months before its released. If they want to target a June release, they would have to announce it sometime in April in order to not be “trumped” by the FCC. This would also make sense with the planned release of the 2.0 firmware in June. Coincide the firmware release and new models all at once. At any rate, I think they are going to have to announce before June if they want to sell them in June.

  6. I’m hoping for a variety of devices the second time around. They’ve already proved the device concept a success, now it’s time to build heavy duty units for heavy users, similarly heavy duty phones without cameras or iPod components for the corporate market, and smaller more colorful personalized devices for the consumer market.

Here’s a funny story. I was shopping for a simple phone for my mom (she’s 72 and not that tech savvy). Of all the phones I showed her at the ATT Store, she thought the iPhone was the easiest to operate. And yet it’s the most sophisticated devices in the store. Hand it to Apple for once again making cutting edge technology easy to use. Kudos, Steve Jobs!
