“Sony Ericsson, the world’s fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer, on Wednesday issued a profit warning because of a shortfall in sales in the company’s core European markets,” Andrew Parker reports for The Financial TImes.
“The warning suggests the global economic downturn is starting to bite in the telecoms industry,” Parker reports. “The company hinted that European consumers were buying fewer new mobiles to replace their existing handsets than previously anticipated.”
“Sony Ericsson said its revenue and net income in the first quarter of 2008 would be negatively impacted by slowing sales growth relating to its mid to high end priced mobiles,” Parker reports.

Ummm, I don’t understand the headline. How can you sell a falling phone?
“The warning suggests the global economic downturn is starting to bite in the telecoms industry,”
By that logic, the iPhone will not have high sales figures, either.
What will they blame when the economy picks up?
“Sony Ericsson warns of falling phone sales”
In other news, Apple warns that falling Macbook Air sales are up, thanks to Charlie Rose.
“…thanks to Charlie Rose’s face plant.”
There, fixed it for you.
i have a sony erricson , it’s utter crap
impossible to use , crappy camera and the battery lasts 4 minutes at best
my sister’s boyfriend has an iphone it wipes the floor with my piece of junk – i am VERY jealous ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
head to head there’s NO contest
roll on 3g no contract models , you can’t come soon enough !!!
well, sony has other ways of earning money… I feel for Nokia, where their only device is the phone…
Which is why they invented morph…

Still not quite sure where they’re at.. but thats the only iPhone killer, if they released it tomorrow.
The warning suggests the global economic downturn is starting to bite in the telecoms industry.
Nothing to do with Sony Ericsson research & development.
More bad news from the inventor of the walkman.
They are not buying new handsets (extending their current contracts) because they are waiting to make the switch to the iPhone.
love my SE phone. amazing battery life even given the fact that bluetooth is always on and I use Bluephone Elite. Great 3.1 mp camera.
yeah, the iPhone is really nice, but I’m not willing to go to AT&T;and the fact that it seems unlocked ones get bricked with each new released of the iPhone OS, I’ll stick with my unlocked SE.
So much for symbiotics.
Des Gusting:
There’s an ‘s’ and a comma missing from the headline. It should read “Sony Ericsson warns of falling Phones, Sales”
A large number of Sony phones have been falling off of roofs or window sills. The gravitationally ensnared phones are striking Sony’s customer base in the head, rendering them unconscious.
Sony’s sales will recover once its customers wake up…er… uh-oh!
Nothing wrong with my SE. Great little phone and fully 3G, unlike some other phones I could mention.
Is MDN now DailyTelecom News? What does this have to do with Apple or the iPhone?
The story relates to global market downtrends, and is for the mobile telecom market in line with similar statements from Texas Instruments (as the article explains).
As far as Europe is concerned, iPhone has just started out in a limited number of countries and has not yet gained any significent ground. Also, SE is more geared to the low and mid-end market, and is not really in the iPhone line of fire.

>my sister’s boyfriend has an iphone it wipes the floor with my piece of junk – i am VERY jealous
I hope you’re jealous of his phone, NOT his relationship with your sister! =:-O
I’ve a Sony K750i, not a bad phone but very crappy UI.
I meant VERY crappy.
Did I say CRAPPY?
Hmmmmm, this brings up a question for anyone here.
If I buy and use an iPhone thru ATT, I gain a 2 year commitment to use ATT. OK.
Now, in two years, my iPhone dies so I buy a new one. Do I need to get another 2 year contract or just swap the sim card????
If I do not need another 2 year contract, then this is a real KILLER to ATT as if I stay with iPhone, I will never need to get locked into another long contract.
Just a thought. Any feed back on this concept.?????

Future MDN headline: “Blood on iPhone’s touch screen…”
IKON
So, you are saying that you’re Sony K750i is snappy?
Stand under an umbrella when you past a Sony office.
Thanks to the falling MacBook Air Charlie hit himself in the eye, causing me and other readers to view Charlie Rose interviewing Paul Volker last night. What a worthwhile interview that was. It was probably the most insightful commentary yet on the disaster caused by failure to regulate and insure the mortgage market in the U.S., not to mention the merchant banking community. One hopes that the interview will be put on YouTube by some Mac person. If Conrad Black gets six years for moving boxes, the bright lights running Bear Stearns et al ought to be incarcerated for sixty for committing real fraud on a large scale.
The iPhone does NOT get ‘bricked’ every time there is an upgrade.
Charlie Rose is cool.
Yes, you can just buy another iphone or get warranty protection – no need to sign up to AT&T;again. Just swap the SIM card.
This article is scraping the barrel a bit.
Yeah, Macnut222, I was thinking the same thing…
Peace.

The obvious conclusion you can draw from this article is that iPhone sales in Europe are doing MUCH better than expected and the other phone manufactures are starting to bleed.
Yeah well i just sold my Ericsson (to buy an iPhone), so there’s a sale for you Sony.
