Apple today announced that MacBook Air, the world’s thinnest notebook, is now shipping. MacBook Air measures an unprecedented 0.16-inches at its thinnest point, while its maximum height of 0.76-inches is less than the thinnest point on competing notebooks.
MacBook Air has a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display, a full-size and backlit keyboard, a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing, and a spacious trackpad with multi-touch gesture support so users can pinch, rotate and swipe. MacBook Air is powered by a 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache, and includes as standard features 2GB of memory, an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive, and the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi technology and Bluetooth 2.1.
The new MacBook Air is now shipping and will be available through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of US$1,799, and includes:

Build-to-order options and accessories for MacBook Air include the ability to upgrade to a 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor; 64GB solid state drive, MacBook Air SuperDrive, Apple USB Ethernet Adapter, Apple USB Modem, Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter, Apple Remote and the AppleCare Protection Plan. Additional build-to-order options also include pre-installed copies of iWork ‘08, Logic Express 8, Final Cut Express 4 and Aperture 1.5.

I can see how this awesome machine can be useful for a person with a main computer at home, and needs a light laptop for quick trips around town. For long distance and multiple day travelers, a full complement type of laptop is needed.
What some trolls, fudmasters and naysayers are spouting on the net shows their ignorance of what Apple is doing with this product. In about a year or so, I bet Apple will be able to provide for us new MBP that will be almost as thin as this gorgeous laptop. Once they solve the optical drive thickness, the rest will fall into place.
Can you imagine a MBP almost a svelte as the MBA?

The MBA will become a must-have on the uni-campuses of the (western) world, where the Mac is already a status symbol.
An iMac in your room, and a MBA for all the coming-and-going between lectures, the mensa, and the WC.
One sector that I don’t think a lot of people have considered is how attractive this laptop will be to women. The weight, form factor and drop-dead gorgeous looks will be very appealing in this market.
And don’t think this is insignificant… the number of women enrolled in universities is now considerably higher than men.
How soon can I fondle one at a retail store? End of the week?
I sure hope the Apple Stores hand out latex gloves and throw down plastic tarps. This could get messy.

I dunno about “fondle”. The feature set says only: “tap, scroll, pinch, rotate and swipe”. Maybe with Automator you can create a macro….
I guess you can just stick them in an A4 envelope and post them, wait for it, air mail.

I hate to say it but I’ve heard firewire is an endangered species. USB3 will be next and will apparently be super duper fast. Like copy gigs in seconds.
