Deutsche Telekom AG’s “T-Mobile unit, which provides cellular service in Europe and the United States saw customer sign-ups increasing, stoked by its offering of Apple Inc.’s iPhone in Germany last year. It also posted gains in subscribers in the U.S. and British markets,” Matt Moore reports for The Associated Press.
“In Germany, T-Mobile said it reached nearly 36 million customers by the end of 2007, up 14.5 percent from last year, with nearly 1 million of them opting for what it calls fixed-term contracts instead of a pay-as-you go model,” Moore reports.
“Demand for the iPhone was strong, too, with 70,000 of the phones sold since its debut in November. T-Mobile is the only company selling it with a two-year contract. The arrangement is similar to those Apple Inc. has with other carriers around the world,” Moore reports.

Is this title valid? A 14% user increase of 36 million users is 5 million. Can 70,000 additional iPhone users be counted as “mobile subscriber gains powered by Apple iPhone”?
I think the iPhone will be a hit wherever it is sold, but this title is stretching it a bit.

Not every one of those 36M people can afford (don’t need) iPhone.
Germany: 70,000 iPhones in a population of 89,000,000.
Would anybody be impressed if that was the same ratio for the U.S.;i.e three times those numbers: 210,000 iPhones sold in a population of 290,000,000????

The T-Online prices are outrageous for the service they offer.
The title has been changed. It used to say something like: “T-Mobile subscriber gains powered by Apple iPhone”. That is why I calculated the numbers and found the iPhone accounted for a very small amount of the 14% increase.
Hmm..yes, I am actually quite dissapointed with iPhone&Europe;, it’s not the product, it’s the overall price. People are not gonna pay top-notch prices even for an iPhone if they can get a N95 for free.
