Apple’s new MacBook Air TV commercial and guided tour (with video)

Apple today unveiled MacBook Air, the world’s thinnest notebook. MacBook Air measures an unprecedented 0.16-inches at its thinnest point, while its maximum height of 0.76 inches is less than the thinnest point on competing notebooks. MacBook Air has a stunning 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display, a full-size and backlit keyboard, a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing, and a spacious trackpad with multi-touch gesture support so users can pinch, rotate and swipe. MacBook Air is powered by a 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache, and includes as standard features 2GB of memory, an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive, and the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi technology and Bluetooth 2.1.

MacBook Air has a vibrant 13.3-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display that is energy efficient, and its spacious trackpad offers multi-touch gesture support for pinch, rotate and swipe, making it more intuitive than ever to browse and rotate photos or zoom into web pages in Safari. MacBook Air features a full-size keyboard design in a sleek and durable aluminum enclosure. The backlit keyboard makes it ideal for dimly lit environments such as airplanes, studios or conference halls, and a built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the keys as well as the display brightness for optimal visibility.

MacBook Air delivers up to five hours of battery life for wireless productivity and includes AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi networking, which delivers up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g. Apple’s Migration Assistant software now enables users to quickly transfer files, applications and preferences from your old Mac to MacBook Air right over your wireless network.

  1. I watched the entire keynote waiting for the MacBook Air. After seeing it, I don’t get the impression that it’s intended for the mass market. It’s intended for a specific, targeted market.

Everybody who’s not feeling it, guess what? It’s not FOR you! Appreciate Apple’s engineering skills and move on.

If you see it and instantly “get” it and consequently want one, guess what? You’re the one they were after with this.

Pardon the pun, but all this conversation from the people who don’t want it, like it or “get” it is wasted hot “air”. Apple may now be approaching the point where they CAN target specific market segments with new products. We long-time fans may have to adjust our expectations as they pursue this.

You can win plenty of baseball games hitting singles, doubles, and triples; everything doesn’t HAVE to be a home run in order to score more runs than the other team, and isn’t that the end game, after all?

Apple is “laying brick” again, just like they were in the early 2000s, making preps for the NEXT big push. The iPhone? Home run. The Intel change? Home run. Panther, Tiger and Leopard? Outta the park. Is everything they do gonna be successful on that scale? Do they HAVE to be?

Apple is following a strategy; everybody else is following Apple. Same as it ever was.

    Peace.

  2. I noticed that Apple’s website add says this machine has an LED display. WTF?

It has an LCD. Liquid Crystal Display

It’s LCD is backlit with LEDs.

It does NOT have an LED display.LED displays can be seen all over the place in the form of billboards and other advertising signs and displays.

But, I guess we gotta dumb it down for Joe Consumer.

  3. I think we all know what we’re here for.

  4. It’s brilliant.
If many buy a MacBook Air, it’s successful, If no-one buys one, it’s successful.
The ad(s) and bragging rights keep Apple at the top of the buzz, continuously in the consumer’s consciousness.
Apple is riding a wave, and they’re not getting tired and surfing in to shore for a rest.
Apple is just stepping from better board to better board, spectacular wave to more spectacular wave, and never giving the competition a chance to ride for the public, without Apple right there, way above them, looking fabulous and far superior.

Even the advertising agency shows no sign of slowing down.
The genius of the ‘inter-office mail envelope’ gives everyone an easy water-cooler conversation tag. – “Did you see that ad with the laptop in the envelope?!”
Plus, the context immediately gives the MacBook Air business/office legitimacy, while creative pros will automatically think of how easily that will fit into their camera bag.

Hmmm, I think this “Apple” company just might be someone to keep an eye on.
