Apple’s ‘Get a Mac’ Macworld Expo ad slams Microsoft: Happy New Year! (with video)

Apple Online StoreApple today aired a special “Get a Mac” ad to start CEO Steve Job’s Macworld Expo keynote address. The ad probably is meant only for Macworld Expo audiences (a la Will Ferrell’s “I’m a porn actor” Mac “Switch” ad from yesteryear).

Why not air it on TV? Because Apple probably feels that it’s a bit too strong and more than a little too much for Windows sufferers to take right now.

In the ad, PC, played by John Hodgman, is upset about Microsoft’s Windows Vista (“That didn’t work very well…”) and to make his “terrible year” complete, Apple’s performance in 2007: iMac, Mac OS X Leopard, new iPods, iPhone, etc.

For 2008, however, PC plans on having a banner year, “2008 is going to be the year of the PC!”

Mac, played by Justin Long, tells PC, “That’s a great attitude, PC. Whatddya got planned?” PC’s plan for 2008, of course, is to execute page one out of Microsoft’s one-page playbook: copy everything Apple did in 2007!

  1. Actually, upon reflection, the best thing Steve showed us was Time Capsule. Now, before you go nuts about the wonders of a rather useless buy very thin laptop and some goodies for phone and tunes player, hear me out.

A full featured Extreme base station & big or bigger hard drive in the same neat, wireless white enclosure is a nice compliment for the Mac, for Leopard, and the overall elegant Mac experience.

So, at least something worthy of the occasion. Ad is cute too.

  2. OOOOF. The TRUTH hurts! I LOVE it!

Best Thing… absolutely. Time Capsule is one of those near-invisible things that could change the way people work.

Too bad I just bought a new LaCie RAID drive for Time Machine… I’m lying. I could see using the Time Capsule as a house-wide media server/backup.

  3. I agree with Best Thing. I think Time Capsule is Apple’s much simpler and much more practical answer to Microsoft’s “Windows Home Server.” MS wants to sell you another OS on hefty hardware to be the media hub of your household. Or…you can use a small little box with plenty of storage space for music and videos as well as Bonjour printer sharing and the powerful throughput of 802.11n.

I think Apple has created a highly viable device for far more than just backups.

  4. ah…how true it is…sad but true! rotflmao!

This is good, not in that whimsical sort of way but the deeply funny trainwreck, facing the truth sort of way. Wouldn’t have been perfect if they had ‘security’ pop up at the end and say ‘you’ve reached the sad realization you suck’- BSOD! hehehe

Still its all good! Feel the momentum! How sweet it is….

  5. PC’ s looking forwared to a great year because it’s copying everying Mac does?!?

A great joke at Microsofts expense, but could this be some sort of clue/hint from Apple that they’re going to make the Mac OS available to run on ‘generic’ Intel powered PCs this year?

No wonder a lot of senior M$ execs are leaving right now – game over!

  6. Time Capsule is just the ticket for me. Once Leopard gets a new major version upgrade, I will get Time Capsule plus upgrade to Leopard on our MBP. Too bad the Airport Extreme failed to live up to its promise that a USB connected drive could be used for backup.

Apple really screwed up on the Airport Extreme hardware design, even the latest version. No software upgrade could solve it.

But Time Capsule has a server grade — I think that means high reliability — 500 GB drive in a far more capable wireless router box with far better hard wired connectivity. $299 is a great deal. And Time Capsule seems to be at the center of Apple’s networking and wireless architectures with a lot of software support.

Now what do I do with my recently bought 500 GB USB 2 Free Agent Pro?

  7. “Now what do I do with my recently bought 500 GB USB 2 Free Agent Pro?”

It says on the specs that you can plug it into the Time Capsule.

I am considering using my Western Digital 500 gig solely as a Firewire drive for all the home movies that I need to digitize, and then for ripping many of my old DVDs to. I wouldn’t need it plugged in all the time, so I will just use it as a storage shed, rather than a closet….OK, maybe as an attic vs a shelf…..whatever.

  8. Actually MS did do something new for 08 to try and trump up Macworld Expo. Announcing a New Zune thats just been painted RED was the announcement. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…. OMG, MS is of to a good start for 08. Ahahahaha!
