Citing those pesky ever-present “insiders,” 9 to 5 Mac’s Cleve Nettles reports, “Apple expects to announce sales of roughly five million iPhones at Macworld [Conference and Expo] 2008 in January. Of these, around one million are expected to come from Europe.”
“Apple had originally expected to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 and reaching the halfway point this early is likely to bolster Apple’s stock price,” Nettles writes.

MacDailyNews Take: Apple could announce sales of 5 gazillion iPhones since last Tuesday and the bears would still find ways to talk the stock price down a buck and a half.
I’m pleased to have both my iPhone and my Apple Stock.
Merry Christmas…
I plan to have both in ’08.
Peace.

And I plan to use the (obscene) profits from the latter to buy the former in (early) 2008.
does anyone know how to disable those f@#king annoying pop up rollover ads in safari?
WOW, close to a million from Europe?! That would be the biggest slap in the face to so many analysts.

If Apple launch iPhone in 2008 in China, Japan and india, then next year by this time, they’ll be announcing 20 millions sold.
iPhone Nano @ MacWorld!
To the 5 million early adopters: Thank you for financing the R&D;on the 3G, 32GB iPhone I will be buying this summer.
Just my $0.02

Merry Christmas
It’s time to make deals in China, Japan and India. And then, the rest of the world.
“There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.”
– Steve “Cathedra Occisor” Ballmer
To the 3G, 32GB iPhone early adopters like Ray: Thank you for financing the R&D;on the 4G, 128GB iPhone I will be buying in the summer of 2009.
Just my $0.02
Oh man, if this really happens in January, that would just be awesome. Lets get this iPhone ready for the Enterprise market. Triple the number by the end of 2008!
While I’m glad to hear it, this does suck on a few levels.
1) Yet another Macworld surprise ruined by Apple rumor sites as I was expecting a little under 4 million altogether.
2) This is probably spreading like wildfire and should it not prove true, the actual figure might be seen as a disappointment.
I find the MDN Take especially unfair. Who are these “bears” they speak of? Everyone knows Apple is tanking. Does that make everyone a bear?
Here’s a bit of great news: Microsoft’s awesome Zune is doing much better than those ‘me too’ I-Phones.
Your potential. Our passion.™
@ Ray ur welcome by the way get a pair next time. Also it seems apples 2.5G X area availibility is >> than all other 3G X area availability. At least in the US.
Is 5 million possible after only announcing 1.4 million total after the last quarter? That would be 3.6 million more. I know this is the Christmas quarter, and that Steve will get two more weeks after the New Year to pad the stats a little more, and that they’re now sold in 3 of the largest european countries, but still.
If Apple doubled last quarter’s sales of 1.1 million in the US. Let’s say they sold 2.2 million. That would be normal iPod sales behavior in the Xmas quarter, double the previous month. Given the much smaller predictions from the euro carriers, if they sell 1 million this Xmas quarter, that would be something. Altogether, 4.6 million. Hmmm… with the two extra weeks before MWSF, that does come close to 5 million. Hmmm….
Of course if expectations are set so high, then it’ll be dissappointing if Steve only announces 4 million. I think if this rumor gets traction, and people’s expectations then start to price this rumor into the stock, then I’ll do as I planned originally, and sell half my Apple position going into MWSF, for a hedge
The stats for this quarter are going to be out of this world. I can’t wait for MWSF!
Talk about a phenomenon in the making… and we get to witness it.
“I think if this rumor gets traction”
Already is, Ken.

Screw the Zune, I’m holing out for that TI-Nspire graphing calculator.
MDN! Where is that Ballmer quote!
I don’t see how this could possibly be true… I mean, there’s NO FRIGGIN’ KEYBOARD!
Ballmer couldn’t find the keyboard?
Hahahahahaha
I got a great load of Apple Stock, and am very pleased up or down. Cos I bought a long time ago. Which at the end of 2008 I will unload half and spend wisely.
Peace on Earth and good will to all,
Dougless
@C1…the 80’s era HP calculators were awesome…sad to say I lost mine 🙁
