Chicago Tribune: Verizon’s fake Apple iPhone, the LG Voyager, is clunky and second-rate

“Verizon’s iPhone clone, the Voyager, was released last month to a lot less fanfare than Apple’s iPhone debut earlier this year,” Eric Benderoff reports for The Chicago Tribune.

“Made by LG Electronics, the Voyager uses touch-screen controls for navigation, but they are not integral to the operation of the phone, as on the iPhone,” Benderoff reports.

MacDailyNews Take: LG is the former “Lucky GoldStar,” as it was known in the United States before rebranding to “LG.” In other words: for years, they made some of the world’s worst craptronics; so bad, in fact, that they had to change their name.

Benderoff continues, “In terms of dimensions, the Voyager is twice as thick as the iPhone and not as wide, so the Voyager’s exterior screen, decent at nearly 3 inches measured diagonally, lacks the impact of the iPhone’s 3 1/2-inch screen.”

“The user interface on Apple’s mobile phone was revolutionary in its approach. With the swipe of a finger, an application opens, you type a message, dial the phone or scroll through album covers to find the song you want. It works simply and is quite intuitive,” Benderoff reports. “On the Voyager, the interface uses touch controls on the front cover only and really just to open an application. Use photos as an example: On the iPhone, when you look at family photos, you flick to the next one with a finger. Then, by using two fingers as if they were tweezers, you can enlarge or shrink a photo. Lots of fun. On the Voyager, you tap on a photo to open it. That’s it. You can’t manipulate the image at all. You can tap an arrow key to move forward or backward, which is nice and better than on most phones, but it doesn’t compare with the fun one has with the iPhone.”

“The Voyager is actually a touch version of another LG phone, the enV, which was introduced last year to pretty solid reviews. All LG did with the Voyager is add a new cover to the phone, one with touch-screen tools and bigger internal and external screens,” Benderoff reports.

“As a music player, the Voyager does not compare to the iPhone, or many other music phones, for that matter. It uses Verizon’s Vcast music service, a clunky program in every way compared with iTunes,” Benderoff reports.

Full article, in which Benderoff calls Voyager “second-rate” compared to the iPhone (a very generous characterization), here.

That some foolhardy souls will carry around these old phones with their bolted-on bogus iPhone screen that does nothing with touch besides launch apps is positively Zunish.

  2. Answer me this…… your questions are stupid…

why didnt the HiFi sell well? who cares, every single apple product does not need to be the #1 selling product in the world, nor does it even have to be the best in its own category.

OSX debuted in 2001 well after Windows had the market. Just because OSX is better doesn’t mean everyone is going to just switch the next day. And just because something is better on the market doesn’t mean everyone is going to buy it.

Look at Blu Ray and HDDVD either one provides HD video playback, thats all that the end user will see, however many other things will play into their market share, directly speaking about which movies they can buy on either format, and prices. Just because HDDVD might be the better format for data storage and movie playback doesn’t mean it will be the market leader, and the same goes the other way with blu ray.

your questions are overly obnoxious…. you might as well ask, why doesnt Steve jobs build a time machine and go back in time to kill bill gates and take over the computer industry?

  3. Let me see if I can answer some of these.

But it is the Number One phone and the iPhone is not, why is that? Not sure where you are getting this data.

Why is Windows the Number One selling OS and Mac OS X is not? Windows in some contries, like Japan, is NOT the #1 selling OS at the moment. Momentum is changing.

If the 1st generation iPod was so perfect, why did Apple have to come out with cheap, low capacity iPods? No one said that ANY of Apple’s product is perfect. Lower capacity just makes it easier to get into the iPod.

Why didn’t the iPod Hi-Fi sell? Because is sounds like total ass! Really the worst Apple product im my opinion.

Why does cheap crap sell well? Because this is America. We are all about the cheap. The majority of us value the dollar more than the product somtimes. That is also a MS metality. One that Apple is doing great things to change.

Are some people born with a gene lacking the ability to judge quality and value?, why? Does it explain PC users? No not really. Again see the above comment. This is a cultural thing that Apple is up against.

Why did Apple come out with annoying glossy only screens which over 85% people dislike? Dude, you got me on that one. I have no idea either.

Why did OS X 10.5 get released with so many bugs? Define so many. Have you TRIED vista lately?

Why doesn’t OS X.5 work properly in the Apple Stores? Seems to be working fine at mine.

Why is there so many security issues with OS X when for years OS 9 was nearly perfectly secure? OS9 was NOT perfectly secure. In fact, any of you guy/gals remember the kernal panic bug for OS9?

Why did Apple adopt Intel’s and Microsoft’s (The “Evil Wintel Alliance”) privacy intrusive EFI? Explain this please.

Why did some early Intel Mac’s have the TPM chip and now they don’t? Don’t know.

Why didn’t Apple adopt BlueRay drives in all their machines yet? I am sure they are waiting to see which format is going to be more popular. But then again…aren’t we all?

Why did Apple hobble iMovie, charging users for a upgrade and then taking features away? Dude, simple. They wanted to take a new direction with it. Plus, they perposly did not overwrite the old iMovie so people who are still wanting to use it can.

Why doesn’t Apple offer more computer hardware options? A upgradable iMac? I’m getting really tired of this opinion. They more hardware they have to support the more kaos it invites. It is the Apple way. Love it or hate it.

Why can’t one build a Mac? Why can’t one buy exactly the specs they need? See above comment.

Why does Apple hate the gaming market? Explain this.

Why didn’t Apple adopt the Cell processor? Especially for graphics? The answer to this is in the success they are having now.

Why is Sony products in the Apple Stores and Apple products in the Sony Stores? Some gross twist of fate?

Why does the MacPro lock up when running multiple applications at once all the time? Mine doesn’t.

Why does iTunes cut the sound when processing Album Artwork or other work in the background? It is processing the ID3 tag. I am going to guess it cuts out in order to not corrupt the mp3 file as it does this.

Why did Apple not adopt Coverflow as the developers originally intended? Why is it slow and buggy? Works fine for me.

Why did Apple adopt the slow Intel processors when IBM said they could develop cool G5 and G6 processors? To hot, to expensive, wrong road map. Move on.

Why does Apple Stores use a Windows based portable point of sale device? Are you SURE that is windows based? Look closer.

Why is Quicktime so full of exploits? Why does it annoy PC users with nagware? Dude, it annoys EVERYONE with nagware. But the point of quicktime is this. It is the one technology that Apple created that is becoming ubiqitous. Therfore, that is where malware will attach itself to the Apple frontier.

Why is Apple hardware prohibtably expensive? If you want the porsche you pay for the porche. If you can afford the yugo, your stuck with the yugo.

Why does the iPhone actually cost one $1400 and it only costs $300 to make? Is this really a serious question? Gee God forbid someone makes a desirable product and make 50 points on it. Geez.

Why does a iPod Classic with 160Gb cost three times as much as a 160GB hard drive? Does a 160GB drive give you an interface. Move on.

Why doesn’t Apple allow installation of Mac OS X on external drives? Like a external RAID 0 for a iMac? That maybe coming someday

Why doesn’t Mac OS X simply run Windows software? It does homeslice. Boot camp.
Why risk security just for the sake of the shit code.

    Hope that helps.

  4. @ answer me

Gotta congratulate you for the most intriguing troll of the week award. So many questions, so little caring to answer them all.

My favorite, though, is the one about the iPhone costing $1,400. Not sure where you shop, dude, but mine cost $399. And if you’re going to add monthly fees, choke on it. I was already an AT&T;subscriber, and my iPhone bill is $20 LESS each month than for my crappy, disfunctional Treo 600.

My second favorite question is “Why does cheap crap sell so well?” Because a lot of people are perfectly happy with cheap crap, or don’t know enough to tell the difference. McDonald’s sells the most hambugers, but that doesn’t make ’em any good.

  5. Say…why DOESN’T Steve Jobs build a time machine and go back and kill Bill Gates? Shh, I hear Apple’s working on their version of the Flux Capacitor, the iFlux, which allows users to not only travel in time but to do so stylishly as well.

  6. “. . . why DOESN’T Steve jobs build a time machine . . .”

He did. The enhanced feature you seek will be unlocked in a free update to OS X in 10.5.2. Apple engineers had to solve the grandfather paradox first.

“Why is Apple hardware prohibtably expensive?”

Beclaws ewe probabtly misred the preis tack?

  7. Don’t know if this guy is a disgruntled Mac guy or a disgruntled PC fan or just a loser. He has a lot of bitterness, and I’m pretty sure it didn’t start yesterday. Wow, wouldn’t want to be at the post office he works at when he finally snaps…

  8. They had this head-to-head with the iPhone this morning on “The Today Show” and of course the tech guy went with the Voyager. He liked the real keypad. Um, yeah, so much for that. Oh, and he also almost gave the nod to the Zune 80 because of wireless and the FM radio. Went iPod Classic in the end because of iTunes Store.
