“Not all preferences appear in your iPhone Settings application. As I discussed rather thoroughly in my Modding Mac OS X book, it’s not that hard to dig through applications and discover undocumented–or in this case unpromoted–preferences that add spice to your Mac or iPhone. I decided to put the iPhone’s SpringBoard to the test. That’s the app that runs your main home page. This core application contained over a dozen user-settable preferences. I tested them all and selected my six favorites. If you have access to the command line, you can start having fun with these settings yourself,” Erica Sadun reports for TUAW.
Sadun explains how to:
1. Set a fake “time”
2. Setting a fake carrier
3. Hide certain apps
4. Use the “iPod touch” dock style
5. Use numeric Cell signal strength values
6. Use numeric WiFi signal strength values

WHAT? Is it just me or does these settings sound pretty useless.

R U an Agnostic Greek Mac_Atty?
If you read the link, you will see that your point has already been stressed, that then negates comments like yours if of course the commentor has not read the link!
Utterly Zuseless!!!!
I like the cell strength indicator, but couldn’t get it to work.
And the award for useless trivia offered on the web goes to……
Erica Sadun!!!!
Yeah! That’s right Erica, you made the dumbest contribution to mankind this year. Congrats and all the kudos that goes with such an acheivement!
Just my $0.02
I can’t believe I just wasted precious moments of my life looking at this.
thumb twiddler – I can’t believe I just wasted precious moments of my life looking at this.
Don’t forget writing this comment. That waisted some time as well ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />

Erica,
I appreaciate your effort to educate those that may not have realized that such ‘easter eggs’ existed. As for the baffoons who are quick to criticize, what have they done to get information to the people? What have they done that makes their time oh so precious that they are bothered by the mere fact that they read the article (and some even took the time to post here).
Well, it could be argued in some quarters that if you’re at work, it’s not your time being wasted.
A 24kt gold MacBook Pro, now THAT’S useful!
Kevin? Are you trying to get in Erica’s pants?
Snore…ZZZZZZzzzzzzz Desperate for an article on this one, folks.
these may be documented, but…
double-click on home button
– if iPod is playing, you will see an iPod controller with track information, volume slider, forward/backward & pause buttons, go to iPod button
– if iPod is not playing, will immediately take you to the phone
I agree, totally useless crap.
Are we Aussie gonna get the Phone next year?
undocumented??? how about UNSUPPORTED & requires a HACK!?!?!?!?!?
if you modify your car engine and increase the horsepower to 300 from 200 does that count as an undocumented feature???
This is stupid.
It should be titled: “6 uncommon hacks for a hacked iPhone” or something along those lines.
Pointless!
@Crabapple
And what does that say about your comments?
’nuff said. Move along.
