Apple’s Mac OS X beats out Windows, takes 53.9% OS-only market share in Japan

“Microsoft’s has taken a bruising in the Japanese marketplace just as Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard was released, according to a new report by the country’s Business Computer News,” Electronista reports.

“The publication notes that while sales of Mac OS X increased dramatically between September and October, climbing from a rate of 15.5% year-over-year to 60.5%, Microsoft suffered from the reverse effect,” Electronista reports.

“Sales growth of Windows plummeted from 75.3% to 28.7%,” Electronista reports. “The sudden switch provided Apple with about 53.9% of the total OS-only marketshare in Japan during October — a breakthrough for the company, BCN says.”

  1. Once the Japanese do it first, then the use of leopard will really take off worldwide. Such a plummet in less then a month for Microsoft.

I think Microsoft should scrap Vista, and go back to XP. But in this case, dress up XP to look like Vista with some of it’s lame features as well. That way there wouldn’t be compatibility issues like the current Vista. It’s an embarrassment that in 4-6 years, this is the best they came up with. So, so lame!!!!!

    Leopard All the Way!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Some on here keep pointing out that it was only because Leopard has just come out etc etc. They are the sort that only tout market share stats when they suit them!

So if you are into stats then what about installed user base stats?

While Macs last between 4 to 5 years each and are usually passed down to colleagues or family members, kids parents etc, winturd boxes which sell en-masse for $500 are usually thrown in a skip (dumpster) after a year and a half.

I am sure the overall percentage of Macs in the total computer installed userbase is a lot higher than the OS X monthly market share figures suggest.

So I guess this Japanese Market share figure for last month is significant and as more and more Macs are being used more and more computer users who are ignorant of Macs will get to see them in action and more Macs will sell. This may only be one month figures in one country but once it hits the news it will get people thinking that maybe it’s time to try a Mac.

I was once the only person in my family with a Mac and now there are eight of them. And I don’t particularly have a large family!

Time for a snowball effect guys. That’s what we want.

  3. First, the Japanese market has long been a disappointment to Apple. They even mentioned it on the last conference call. Remember, Phil Schiller was put in charge of the Japan sales region because it needs special attention.

Second, what the sales figures illustrate is that MS Vista is not selling well at retail. It sells well to OEMs, but MS is not breaking out retail sales, and now we know from Japan’s numbers what we always suspected that noone in their right mind is buying Vista retail. It makes more sense to buy a new PC with Vista pre-loaded than it does to buy a retail version of Vista for an old PC. That isn’t true for Macs, and so Leopard retail sales should be decent. And, that’s what the numbers show.

The above from a southerner… Read that and understand Bell.

Didn’t think it’d take much before the little republican bigot came out from under his rock!

    Talk about intelligence… FYI:

Those brilliant founding fathers – ALL were northerners or from the UK [except Hamilton, from the West Indies]. Oh, and the 10 ten states with the highest divorce rate – all in the south; the 5 states with the highest murder rate – all in the south; 9 of the 10 states that get the most federal dollars and pay the least… can you guess? That’s right, red states. All those Federal taxes you love to hate? It all comes from us and goes to you, so shut up and enjoy your Tennessee Valley Authority electricity and your fancy highways that we paid for.

There’s more but you bore me.

Maybe Apple should be more committed to expanding its market share in Europe too. Apple hardly ever advertise its products and when they do (like around Christmas), they don’t have the retail presence to actually sell them. Go figure out. What a waste of money.

How many stores has Apple opened in Europe so far ? As far as I remember, there are only stores in London and Rome. How about Paris, Madrid, Berlin or Cologne, just to name big cities. I don’t even mention Brussels, Amsterdam, Luxembourg…

Localization is still limited. Many central european languages are simply ignored.

The exchange rate US Dollar – Euro should make prices much lower than they actually are. And if Apple explain it has to do with localization costs, I should start a translation business and I would become rich in no time.

Finally, I remember most US schools had Apple computers before. Why is it so smart Americans actually bought and still buy PCs in the end ?

  7. Obviously, you’ve not been to Texas.
We’re pretty far “south” (geographically speaking), but I’d rank the populations of Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin right up there against most of the places I’ve lived in.

Now if you’d like to talk about a place where religion and politics have kept a people “down”, I’d suggest looking up north, in Detroit, where I was born and raised.

Nothing against the people in MI, it’s just that you’ve been sold a fib for so long, that unless you get out and see how the rest of the country lives, you simply don’t know any better.

  8. Didn’t think it’d take much before the little democrat bigot came out from under his rock!

Ummm… what do they say? “Statistics don’t lie, but statisticians do?”

You’ve went out of your way to point out murder “rates by state”, but these are all in VERY low population states, and the actual NUMBERS of those killed are ridiculously low when compared to “northern” states with “leftward leaning” cities.

    Try this out;

    1) Detroit.
    2) Baltimore
    3) New Orleans (and if it weren’t for Katrina’s aftermath, it’s debatable whether or not they’d be there)
    4) Newark
    5) St Louis (Southern? Maybe, but everyone I know considers the city “midwestern”)

According to the FBI’s website, the number of murders in Detroit (“north” and as deep in the Libs pocket as you can get) EXCEED the number of murders in Montana, Alaska AND Wyoming.

Nice attempt at spin, but since anyone with an internet connection can go to http://www.fbi.gov and look for themselves, you’ll soon be exposed for the leftward leaning hater that you are.

  9. “How exactly do you think music production occurs if Nashville consists of nothing but tabaccky-chewin’ rednecks? “

Because what they produce is tabaccky-chewin’ redneck musik?

“And as for “religion keeping people dumb”, tell that to C.S. Lewis, Tolkein, Pascal, Augustine, R.C Sproul, etc. Your theory holds about as much weight as wet toilet paper. ‘

The intellegent have always used religion as a way to control the masses.

Its interesting that your first choices for intelligent people influenced by religion are fantasy writers.

    “because stupidity can’t be cured.”

My guess is you know this because you’ve spent quite some time looking for a cure for yourself?
