Apple has released iMac Software Updates for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard.
Both updates are available via Software Update and also as a standalone installer:
• iMac Software Update 1.2 (Tiger): This update provides important bug fixes and is recommended for 20-inch and 24-inch iMac models with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8GHz processors.

How does this affect iMac G5s?
Applied this to the Random Wife’s 20-inch model — which has been having slow wake-from-sleep issues.
(Wow — that came out sounding a lot dirtier than I thought it would.)
No apparent glitches — but it didn’t fix her slow wake problem either.
Since this is for both Tiger and Leopard, it has GOT to be a fix for the interface lockups that have been plaguing Aluminum iMac buyers the past 2 months. Typical, though, that they don’t release any details. Other than a grudging acknowledgement that the problem exists issued about a month ago, Apple won’t even let their store and service employees admit that there is an issue.

I bought the 24″ 2.4GHz iMac in late August. It worked perfectly until they released the 1.1 firmware update for Aluminum iMacs. Then it started locking up the interface. (The mouse still moves, the process still works in the background, but the interface is DEAD. No way to break out of it except a restart of the machine.) It got so bad after a couple days, my wife and I were getting locked up twice an HOUR.
It seemed to have been something about overheating and the video card. I eventually backed out of that 1.1 firmware update, did an archive and restore to the factory software DVDs, and it hasn’t locked up since. But Apple continues to push the 1.1 firmware update, which I’ve been refusing. Others who have reapplied it immediately saw the lockups again. (Strangely, though, some who never applied the update were also seeing this problem.)
Personally, I’m not applying this thing until I hear what others are experiencing with it.
I’ve been having some mysterious slow wake-from-sleep issues after late night parties, but this update definitely made my wake-from-sleep function snappier.
It appears that many of those with the lockup issues have third party RAM issues. If you have one of these iMacs that is freezing up, first try removing all third party RAM and then try things again. Chances are that your freezing and lock ups will stop.
Ain’t got didley to do with 3rd party RAM FixIt, you can shuv it. It has to do with the video card processing video. Being unable to do exactly what its supposed to do. It sucks and its frustrating, and its stupid that Apple has taken this long to fix it. I hope it is the reason for the update.
Just bought my wife a 24″ iMac to replace her old Dual processor 1.5GHz G4. It came with a Leopard OS Disk but, Tiger was installed (I upgraded it to Leopard after after setting it up) the EFI Version is 1.1.2. Hasn’t locked up at all, but I would agree it’s a bit slow to wake from sleep. I’ve been tweaking the Energy Saving setting and I’ve made it a lot snappier in the wake up cycle. Replacing the 1GB of Memory for 4GB of Memory helped quit a bit too.
My Stacks actually work now!!!
No third party RAM on my system. 2GB of Apple-installed RAM.
Does this update fix the glossy displays back to a matte finish?

Yes. This update features Apple’s new software pixel rarefaction technique that will physically change the surface of your display from glossy to matte, with just a few blasts luminous radiation. Really amazing technology.
An interesting side note – if you stand in front of the display during the software pixel rarefaction, it will also wax your balls for you.
I bought the 24″ 2.8e in late September and it too came with Tiger. I was all prepared to be disappointed in the machines performance after reading all of the problems others were reporting in the Apple discussion forums.
My concern was for not. I love this machine! It runs flawlessly. I installed 10.5 a month later and I couldn’t be any more happier. Because I have not experienced any anomalies, I will wait a bit longer before installing this latest update.
Sorry for the gush but I have gone from a five-year old MDD to an intel-based machine running Leopard and it feels damn good.

It has no effect on G5 mac’s since it is updating the video driver of the X2600 in the aluminum imacs.
I wouldn’t think that it is even offered up in software update unless you had the machine in question, but if it is, I can understand the confusion.
MDN… you might want to change the headline to include the fact that it’s only the Aluminum iMacs that are updated with this software release. The intel core 2 duo, and core duo, are not affected by this release. Even though their processor speeds meet the requirements.

My 24″ 2.8GHz with 4GB of Apple installed RAM which I ordered on they day they were announced never had a problem in Tiger. I had a day or so with Leopard that were ok and then after installing this update I have locked up two or three times.
Ya got me…
My imac only freezes after playing doom 3 (when I hit quit, during gameplay everything’s fine) even on unreal tournament everything runs just fine..
haven’t played doom 3 since applied this update

I’m really starting to worry this is not a driver but a hardware problem.
24″ 2.8GHz with 4GB third party RAM ordered the day they were announced running Tiger with all previous updates applied…
Froze on me quite often but I could never reproduce it at will until I got Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008. Then it would freeze on a black screen every time I tried to play a round of golf. EA Sports was aware of the issue and claimed in their FAQ that Apple was aware and would fix the problem in their next update.
I applied the update and have not had any freezing problems and can now play TW08 without issue.
