Houston Chronicle reviews Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard: A winner for Mac users and Windows switchers

“Here’s the test I use to determine whether a new computer OS is a success: If I am using both the older operating system and the newer one, do I miss the latter when I’m using the former? The answer, if everything has come together as it should, is yes,” Dwight Silverman reports for The Houston Chronicle. “And that’s definitely the case with Mac OS X 10.5, better known as Leopard.”

“Overall, Leopard’s a winner. If you’re a Mac user, you will want this on your computer,” Silverman reports.

If you’re a Windows user who’s been tempted by the Mac, I’m not sure there’s much here to add to the siren song you’re already hearing. But if you make the leap, there’s a lot in Leopard to make you glad you did,” Silverman reports.

1. i touched on this awhile back, but here goes again…

for mac users, leopard is a great upgrade to an already great OS. if you get into some PC users face about how macs are so much better, they’re probably going to think you’re a rabid fanboy and won’t pay much attention.

the best way i have found to get people into mac is let them come to you. open your macbook up somewhere and let the questions begin.

or if you’re the resident nerd in the area, and someone asks you about how to solve windows security problem X, you could say, “i dunno, i haven’t dealt with problems like that in a long time”. they ask you what you did, you say i got a mac awhile back, and macs *usually* don’t have those problems. (if you say “usually” you won’t sound pompous!) if they ask when the last time your mac had a problem like that? say, “well, actually, it hasn’t ever…” – be polite and understanding, not arrogant and one-sided!

just my .02.

MW: members. we’re not members of a cult, guys, so if you’re trying to get someone to switch, remember – do it because you want to be helpful, not because you want to flaunt your “group” superiority!

2. My boss just upgrade from a 2 year old Dell Latitude 610 (XP) to a 620 (Vista). He said it’s the first time a new computer has felt slower than the old one. For him, Vista fails the ” If I am using both the older operating system and the newer one, do I miss the latter when I’m using the former” test

3. I saw this in the paper when it ran and I pointed it out to everyone at work. They were all impressed because, if you don’t read the Chronicle regularly, you might miss the fact that Silverman is the Windows guy on staff…

Dr. Mac also has a column on the same page.

4. I friend who uses Windows.. I help him fix his Windows problem all the time. Then me bought a New laptop with Vista on it. The thing would not connect to his network with the ethernet, and every time the System would go to sleep it would drop the IP and then flood the DHCP server on the router with IP requests when he would start using it again. The NAT Router’s poor DHCP Server would crash so hard It would need to have the router cold booted. I figured out what was happening by having his router email me it’s logs when they got full. I’d get like 65 to 70 emails from the router in about 3 mins each time the system would get woke up. After a week he returned the laptop and asked me for help picking out a better one.

Don’t know if it was Vista or the Laptop but he’s now got a Mac Book Pro and uses Bootcamp to boot to XP when he needs to use his Windows only software and he doesn’t have the issues any longer.

He loves the Mac Book Pro and he saids it’s faster then his Windows PC gaming system and never has network issues with it Wired or wireless. He’s freaked out on how much faster Safari on OS X.5 compared to IE and Firefox on XP and we don’t talk about Vista or the “Crap Dung” has he calls it.

5. For what it’s worth, Leopard is not all wine and roses. Safari 3 seems to be a disappointment.
Safari 1 was good enough … met the competition quite well for a 1.0
Safari 2 was great, beat out most of the competition
Safari 3 (beta) had some problems accessing features on the Podomatic site
Safari 3 has NEW problems accessing Podomatic – Firefox does it right
Why should I care about Podomatic? It’s the site that hosts my pod cast. The one that’s drawn so many complaints. It’s important to me. And, they aren’t the ones that changed.
Also, third party wares iClipLight is half busted under Leopard.
Expect 10.5.1 to show up sooner, rather than later.

6. Personally I think Leopard is a major upgrade. A great one too.

I’m very impressed with TimeMachine. It shows the genius coming from Apple. Sure there are other “backup” schemes, but nothing like TimeMachine.

Pure Apple Brilliance!

Nothing like it anywhere else.

7. algoreshair, I believe you misunderstood the problem. The problem is Safari 3 does not properly render the page and does not display the Mail link. There are other problems, as well, but that’s the most obvious.
As for my “over-advertised annoyo-cast”, the mention above was the first in over a week. WELL over a week. And … SO many folks are annoyed about it that my ranking – both within Podomatic and on PodCastAlley – have risen over 20%, it’s in the top 2% in its category on PodCastAlley.
Since you “asked”.

8. DlMeyer-no one asked or cares. The problem is the page is incorrectly written and does not conform to web standards.

Top 2% in its category-must mean it’s in a category with 2 others, something like underwater basket weaving for left handed Haitian lesbians.

9. May be a bit off topic…

I’m tired of morons calling us names like “fanboys”, “mac cultists”, “mac zealots”, etc. Wld be nice if there is a catchy name we can call ourselves instead of all those other dumb names.

Any ideas? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

10. nekogami13, actually … there are over 1,700 entries in the category on PodCastAlley. Are you at all familiar with that site? Seriously, have you even heard the name before? As for Podomatic, being #30 out of “over 100” (category), or #5 out of ~50 (sub-category) is less impressive. Only Top 10% … sigh.
Anyway … unless you have something to say that is Mac-related, please don’t invent any more aliases to hide behind. And kindly use adult language, OK? Jr. High School is SO immature it almost rates as “retarded”.

On Topic: beware Stacks containing information left over from your Tiger installation. I had a folder called “Utilities” on my Dock in Tiger – RMB it to open it up long enough to select the program I wanted to run, then let it close – and those programs were NOT replaced by the Leopard installation. And they wouldn’t run, either. Took a couple of minutes to figure out ‘why not’. The diagnostic message was only a little more concise than the usual from Windows.
