USA Today: With Leopard, Apple’s already superior Mac OS X widens lead over Microsoft’s Windows

“Long before Leopard pounced onto the scene, I rated OS X superior to Windows for most consumers. With Leopard, Apple’s operating system widens its lead aesthetically and technologically,” Edward C. Baig reports for USA Today.

“I migrated to Leopard from the last OS X version, Tiger, without pain on a MacBook laptop and my own iMac desktop; there’s mercifully none of the software driver and other hassles associated with a Windows operating system upgrade. Leopard was pre-installed on an iMac that Apple provided for testing,” Baig reports.

In his full review, Baig covers:
• Time Machine
• iChat
• Mail
• Dock
• Finder
• Quick Look
• Spaces
• Dashboard Web Clip

Baig reports, “hese and other features should satisfy new and old Mac fans. Leopard is one cool cat.”

  1. The only overly “seductive” new feature in 10.5 that’s bound to get alot of people in trouble in the years ahead is, ironically, Time Machine.

Anyone who goes with what appears to be the default setting of leaving an external drive continuously connected so TM can make those automatic hourly and daily backups are one power surge away from disaster.

Even using a good quality UPS/surge protector is NOT going to necessarily protect against the “big one”-a near or direct lightening hit on wires, locally or elsewhere in the area. I live in Florida; I know first hand what I’m talking about.

If you value your data, connect the drive only for the length of time it takes to do a backup and disconnect.

  2. Does anyone else have crashing problems in Safari when clicking on the link???

I’ve crashed 3 times, when I try to click on the link. I start reading the article, and then *boom* it’s closed.

I’m going to try again for the 4th time after I submit this…

  4. @neverfade:

It happens to me often–especially when I’m visiting news sites. Sites such as USAToday, for example. Certain links causes Safari to unexpectedly quit. This happened to me yesterday afternoon–EST.

  5. “You guys are forgetting about Vista Double-Plus-Good Voice-Activated-Sexbot Hyper Matter Transference LX-MT-OTC-BYOB Nuclear Reactor Worldwide Omega Revolution Edition.”

I bet Ballmer is sweating over all the publicity that Leopard is getting. Maybe he will announce one of these new versions tomorrow to attempt to steal Apple’s thunder. It will be the same Vista everybody has been avoiding but it will come in brown packaging and shipped in a plain brown wrapper to avoid the embarrassment of having order it.

  6. FUDsucker Proxy,
Not quite. The drugs used to treat Alzheimer’s are actually acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, and therefore, raise the levels of acetylcholinesterase in the brain. So, close but no cigar.

Just keeping things medically correct around here!

  7. I tell Windows friends all the time about how quick and easy it is to do a clean install of OS X from scratch on a Mac. No drivers find and install, no serial #s, no “activation” process, it’s so painless, they can’t even wrap their heads around it. It’s done in a fraction of the time of a Windows Vista install, and with only one reboot.
