Red-faced Molson pulls Apple iPhone prize from Canadian contest

“Molson Coors Brewing Co. has pulled the iPhone as a prize in a marketing contest in Quebec after a big snafu about when the device will be available,” Catherine McLean reports for The Globe and Mail Update.

“The hopes of Canadian iPhone fans were raised briefly yesterday after it was revealed in Molson’s contest rules that the cool cellphones from Apple Inc. would be available starting January on Rogers Communications Inc.’s network,” McLean reports.

“A red-faced Molson quickly backed away from that schedule, saying it made a mistake,” McLean reports.

“The beer giant has no idea when the iPhone will be launched here, and only wanted to give contest participants a rough idea of when their prizes would be available, according to spokeswoman Marie-Hélène Lagacé. She also corrected an earlier statement that Molson was on the Rogers waiting list for the iPhone, confirming a waiting list doesn’t exist,” McLean reports.

  1. “Impostors are a pathetic, unimaginative little bunch.”

Hear, hear. So much noise, so little signal. But MDN apparently like it this way, although many of us long-term regulars have been clamoring for some basic kind of ID for ages now.

    Oh, and brilliant first take, Dex-Amp-whoever you are today. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

As to impostors, we’ll just have to grin and beer it, I guess. Ignore their pint-sized brains and move on. 😀

  2. “Probably got Steve hopping mad.
They should have kept it bottled up. I guess they couldn’t take it any lager. Well, no feather in their cap. And now they know what ales them.

Sometimes planning ahead won’t make you smarter bud! Wiser, maybe?”

I just wish they wouldn’t dash Canadian hops for the iPhone. I guess they just wanted to end the brew-haha. Annoying though; I had barley read about the news before it was corrected.

I think they are plenty smart. Though MDN made it sound like Molson was embarassed, but the marketing department was pretty smart. iPhone got people talking about Molson beer and the contest, didn’t it?

Pabst we should wait awhile then for it to get sorted out? Or can we wait?

More importantly, I can’t believe you took my post seriously. But, o.k., yes, it was clever.

Nah, I didn’t take it seriously. I get all the puns ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> , but your post served as a context for my point, though. That is this “blunder” may just be a pre-calculated mistake to advertise the product.
