Apple to open 200th retail store on ‘Leopard Day’ October 26th

“On October 26th Apple’s retail operation will cross a milestone: the grand opening of store #200 at the SanTan Village shopping center in Gilbert (Ariz.) October 26th, the same day of the reported release of Leopard, the OS X update,” ifoAppleStore reports.

“It will have been just 2,251 days since Apple opened their first store at the Tysons Corner (Virg.) shopping center, or an average of one store opening every 11.7 days,” ifoAppleStore reports.

  1. Yes, the first store was Tyson’s Corner in Virginia. That first day, the line to get in was wrapped around the concourse. My wife bought her iBook G3 while we were standing in line. An associate took our order in front of the Eddie Bauer store and carried it out to us, complete with extra RAM installed in the store (and yes, I know that’s the most expensive way on the planet to get extra RAM for a Mac.)

  2. “Apple retail? It’ll never work. They’ll fail like Gateway.” Man, how foolish they must feel now! Those retail stores have proven a success beyond anyone’s expectation. They’ve generated billions in revenue, and provided a friendly “gateway” into Apple’s consumer and computer products. Well done, I say.

I just wish Apple had opened a store in downtown Washington. Yes, they’ve got one a subway ride away in Virginia, and a few more out in the ‘burbs. But downtown is where the lawyers and lobbyists, associations, professional types and government types, are to be found. Beyond being an educated, above average income community, these are opinion makers and trend setters.

  3. 2251/200 = 11.7?

How about we send ifoapplestores.com instructions on how to open Dashboard, and click on that little Calculator icon.

It’s actually an average of 11.255 days (that’s 10 hours and almost 41 minutes MORE OFTEN! Bonus!)

  4. Apple does have plans to open a store in Washington — Georgetown actually — 1229 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, to be exact (currently occupied by the French Connection). Not exactly downtown, mind you, but at least a start. I wish they’d open one in Chinatown near the Verizon Center.

  5. Hey, I read the article again, and just laughed my ass off. How many of these guys ever look in the rear view mirror??

    Maybe we should sell Apple stock before it drops below $ 118. ???? LOL ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  6. LOL – the articles features quotes from an exec at CompUSA
(DumpUSA – I say) on how Apple is alienating the almighty powerful retailers, like his store. Uhhhh, where did I hear the name CompUSA before? Weren’t they popular once? All I see now is dead people, I mean abandoned, cobweb-ridden, haunted, used-to-be-alive-but-now-dead stores. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

The next to go, the Microcenter (MicroFleaMarket – I say) where you have multiple flea-market-style tables with, 10% off, orange stickered, 2 year old, out of warranty, mangled box, that’s-the-best-price-we-can-give-you merchandise, then stand in line 15 minutes to pay for it. Gotta love retail.

Are the other places much better? Let’s find out!

  7. @ Math Nerd

    it’s actually 2251 / 199 = 11.312

You don’t count the 1st store (if they had opened 1 store and then a 2nd store 7 days later, it would be 1 store every 7 days, not 1 store every 3.5 days.)

But you ARE right about the math being wrong.

  8. “The next to go, the Microcenter (MicroFleaMarket – I say) where you have multiple flea-market-style tables with, 10% off, orange stickered, 2 year old, out of warranty, mangled box, that’s-the-best-price-we-can-give-you merchandise, then stand in line 15 minutes to pay for it.”

Actually, my local Microcenter is great. Their Mac guys are very knowledgable and their software selection is much better than the local Apple Stores (which have pretty much gotten rid of their software so they can stock more iPod accessories). Their prices on non-Apple stuff is also excellent.

  9. How long before the competition start complaining that Apple presence on the high street or shopping mall is stiffling competition?

How long before the lawsuits claiming that Apple Stores are not stocking the competitions products and are therefor uncompetitive?

How long before the competition come with an original plan called “The Apple Store Killer”?

    How long I wonder?????

  10. The Apple Stores…one of the most brilliant, yet underrated, moves Apple has made in the last 10 years. Typical Steve, taking high-stakes gambles where the potential payoff is huge, and being right!

We got the 7th store in the nation here in Columbus, Ohio, back in 2001. I remember wondering why we got one so soon but I was certainly glad we did!

Continue to Think Different, Apple. We love you for it.

    Peace.
