“Sources familiar with the company’s plans tell BusinessWeek.com that Apple will release a software-development kit for the iPhone in early 2008, enabling programmers to create games, business-productivity tools, and countless other applications for the device. Few details are known, but sources say an announcement will come in January, which suggests it may be slated for Jan. 15, when Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs takes the stage at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco,” Arik Hesseldahl and Olga Kharif report for BusinessWeek.
“Why the wait? Some analysts suggest the delay has little to do with frustrating developers or Apple’s official position about bugs from third-party software posing a threat to cellular networks. Instead, the timing may have more to do with Apple wanting to wait at least until the launch of the new operating system for its Macintosh computers. Known by the code name Leopard, it was originally planned for June, 2007, but is now expected at the end of October. Since the iPhone was built with the current Mac OS, the thinking is that Leopard’s new capabilities will enable more robust features on the iPhone as well,” Hesseldahl and Kharif report.

He’s coming!
Doesn’t the iPhone actually utilize a modified version of Leopard already?
January? Fuck that! Why the long wait?
Someone actually making sense to the reasons as opposed to the normal “Apple hates us” rants.
If that’s so, where’s the beta version?
Grouse, grouse, grouse. Gripe, gripe, gripe. Whine, whine, whine. This ain’t good enough; that ain’t good enough. We’re gettin’ screwed. Jobs is an idiot. Greenpeace is God. Let the breast-beating commence. Mac users are victims of corporate greed. Leopard is a failure. The product line is filled with flaws. What was once perfect is now riddled with pox. It’s hair shirt time. Gnash teeth, smash fingers, burn self. All is lost. We have seen the future and it doesn’t work.
There. That about covers it. No need to read any further here.
I called it weeks ago: SDK by MacWorld ’08. The release of Leopard was the only logical reason for Apple to be so coy about 3rd party apps. Yeah, it would’ve been nice if Apple had just announced the plans. Can’t wait to see how this plays out.
right on damacles.
i guess we should just be happy that one is coming, right? and i can’t help but wonder if a similar SDK will be available for ipod touch, or if the iphone SDK will be compatible? that would be quite interesting. =)
Jeez, damacles, don’t be such a negative nancy.
“Jeez, damacles, don’t be such a negative nancy.”
I thought he was being more of a sad sam. Or a downer dave. Or maybe a bummer bob. Maybe even a malaise martin.
Let’s hope some of the goodies filter down to the iPod touch!
“Why the wait? Some analysts suggest the delay has little to do with…..”
Whatever, it’s just 12 freakin’ weeks. Sheesh.
What will Apple also do when they release their SDK??? They will be the first to demonstrate example apps from their SDK. They have the right to be first and the best part is that we consumers will have some neat new iPhone stuff that doesn’t require a new iPhone purchase. Take that!…Verizon and Blackberry!!
Absolutely. It doesn’t take a genius to see that Leopard’s postponement came partly because they wanted lots of loops in there that i∏hone could tie into. Partly the time was just to finish Leopard, but partly it was to iPhoneize the beast as well. I expect the iPhone to be literally twice as useful by January as it is today.
ProtoDAda-
too much information….
I have been saying for awhile that 3rd party apps would come once Leopard was released because Leopard wasn’t finished enough. The 90 days not only allows Apple to have another announcement with demonstrations of 3rd party apps at Macworld, it also allows for the first Leopard bug fix update to be prepared and disseminated.
I still think it’s so that Apple can get the ‘work’ related software out first. Otherwise people would get hooked on 3rd party apps before Apple gets their chance.
I hope this is true. If it is…I will finally get my iPhone!!
That’s a rumor, not a report…
Exactly what?
I sure hope English is your second language, if that is the case, then you have my admiration & apology.
If not, then I pity you and anyone that paid for your edumacation.
Besides, what does this have to do with Britany?
MDN word: Rumor
Even though it’s from respected news source, it’s still a rumor.
What’s a contaction? Do you need an ointment for that?
r2 sez: Jeez, damacles, don’t be such a negative nancy.
You might want to get a quick tune-up there on your sarcasm detector, r2. it sounds like it’s not quite working right. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”hmmm” style=”border:0;” />

I was beginning to wonder if anyone else even noticed that… lotsa surface readers here, apparently…
So when does the lawsuit start?
Will the SDK work on iPod touch? That’s what I want to know…
