“The Dock in Mac OS X is unique in comparison to the user interface of Windows, most Linux distros that emulate the Windows desktop, and previous versions of the Classic Mac OS. Apple has significantly updated the Dock in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard,” Prince McLean reports for AppleInsider.
McLean takes a look at what’s new and different in Leopard’s Dock in a 3-page report which covers:
• The Dock’s Origins
• The NeXT Dock
• Newton’s Dock
• Dock Substitutes in the Classic Mac OS
• Windows: No Dock For You
• Mac OS X: Return of the Dock
• The New Dock in Mac OS X Leopard
• Stacks Take Back the Dock
• The Applications Stack
• The Documents Stack
• The Downloads Stack
• The Lean, Clean New Dock

nice article, really looking forward to stacks.
WOOO!!! C’mon Leopard!!!!!
…although don’t be surprised if I ignore you 48 hours after installing you thanks to the Guitar Hero 3 launch…
Dock? What are your customers, ships? Stacks? What are your customers, meat? When this is the best you can come up with, it’s clearly time* to shut down the company and give the money back to the shareholders.
*But please wait a few weeks for my Verizon contract to expire so I can get an iPhone before you shut down.
I very, very dislike the irritating dock and have always diabled the thing. Instead, I am using MaxMenus for years.
M Dell, That’s stacks not steaks.
@Johan
I think you’re gonna be pissed off then, because I’ve seen reports that you can’t disable the dock in leopard.
Anybody out there with a preview of leopard that can confirm this?
I very, very dislike the Johan and have always diabled the thing. Instead, I am using the Hmm for years.
oh well, nothing beats DragThing. I only use the dock for active apps – placed on the left.
How do other professionals carefully transform pixels at the bottom of their art work? Oh yes, put the dock on the right. Well, how to work at the right side of a photograph? The whole dock-idea sucks. At least its mouseover delay should be made changeable.
Dock Schmock…i wan’t my damn piles 🙁
Great article. I don’t really minimize too much so i don’t relate all of his whining about dock space being filled up. CMD+H makes it go away and saves space. CMD+TAB summons it back.
I’m the same as Fiona. Dock for active apps only. For all other app, file and folder tasks, I heavily use Quicksilver. As far as I know, anyone who has used Quicksilver has never looked back. I hardly even use the finder for locating, copying, moving or renaming files anymore; all done with Quicksilver. It’s worth any amount of reasonable cash, but it’s still free!!
Though the new dock looks lovely, I find that all of this will just be pretty once Quicksilver gets loaded on the lovely Leopard…expediting clicks is kinda worthless when a matter of a few keystrokes does the job.

PET PEEVE:
‘Unique in comparison’ is a redundancy. Unique means one of a kind; unlike other things. If sonething is unique, it is unique ‘in comparison’ to everything.
When I read an article that starts off with such bad writing, I’m less inclined to take seriously anything that follows.
Am I unique in this?
nani: You are very unique! <shudder>

I’m glad there’s a redesign, but since I’ve adopted Quicksilver, I barely use the dock at all.
very uniquely distinctly different in comparison I would say
I still really hate the springing folders. If I can’t put a folder in the dock and right-click to access its contents, the new dock is For The Loose.
So why DOES Linux emulate Windows rather than Mac OS?
“So why DOES Linux emulate Windows rather than Mac OS?”
Because Windows has a far superior UI. No one likes those stupid flashy macs. Duh.

Seriously? Maybe you’re new to this, but how about resizing your window?

Hit the “f” key (twice, now).
The iCal and Trash REFLECTION is very WRONG
