Apple, Mac users gear up for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard release

“Steve Jobs and Co. are set to remind the world about their first love in coming days with the release of Leopard, the newest version of the Macintosh operating system, which will update the current Tiger,” John Boudreau reports for The San Jose Mercury News.

“‘Some have said Apple is pushing the Mac out of the way’ for other gadgets, said Rick Shim, an analyst with market research firm IDC. “‘I wouldn’t say that’s the case at all. The Mac is still central to their universe,'” Boudreau reports.

Apple “continues to update its PC line. Just in August, Apple unveiled a new line of even more svelte iMac desktops. Now it’s ready to draw the curtain on a new operating system,” Boudreau reports.

“‘If Apple is able to deliver on all of the stuff they are showing to date with Leopard, there is no doubt in my mind they will have another hit on their hands,’ said Michael Gartenberg, research director at Jupiter Research,” Boudreau reports.

“Leopard is priced at $129 for single copies, and $199 for the family pack, which includes licenses for as many as five users. Leopard, along with other digital lifestyle software, will be bundled with every new Mac laptop and desktop computer,” Boudreau reports.

  1. Interesting to see someone at this paper writing about Apple other than the infamous Troy Wolverton.

I wonder if he got fired after all the criticism he got from RoughlyDrafted.com and MDN? I won’t mind if he did.

  2. I don’t know what all this moaning about iMovie is. you have 2 solutions now. iMovie 6 and iMovie ’08

    Deal with it Profound.

Personally I have now got used to iMovie’08 and actually prefer it especially with the update. It’s so easy and quick to use now.

Anyway. I really can’t wait to buy my Leopard Family Pack. Can anyone confirm whether the British price for the Leopard Family Pack is £139 including V.A.T.?

With the US$ so low, why aren’t you buying mail order from the States?

Personally, I’ll wait for 10.5.2 when a lot of the bugs are worked out.

  4. If someone “can’t wait” for Leopard to debut to buy a new computer, whatever gave you the idea they could wait an extra two and a half months to get a speed-bumped version? The computer is needed now, the OS won’t be available for a couple weeks.

Did I read that right? Did someone suggest Leopard would be de-contented prior to delivery? Have they mistaken Apple for MicroSoft? Are they suggesting Leopard only needs to be “good enough”? Tiger is “good enough”. Leopard will be “the new market leader”.

  5. MacPaint on Leopard… hahahah great idea.

Personally I look forward for this new OS.
For no other reason then to be new! Laugh is you will…
But seriously, that was what Tiger did for me.
Tiger was so much faster and cleaner then 10.3

So I welcome whatever improvements Apple implements.

    And at 200 for a family pack… it’s a deal.

  6. I just can’t wait for all the iPhone updates they said would come with the leopard release. Not to mention Leopard itself would be bring new lineups for the macbooks. they already did it to get our mouths drooling with the iMacs.

  7. “‘Some have said Apple is pushing the Mac out of the way’ for other gadgets, said Rick Shim, an analyst….”
Who are “Some” and what makes Mr. Shim an analyst? Another rumor monger who doesn’t know anything about Apple!

MW: Say, as in say what!

  8. iMovie ’08 freakin’ ROCKS. I owned the previous iMovie ’06 and never got far with it–my life is to busy to wrestle with Baby Final Cut Pro.

iMovie ’08 is so easy an most important INTUITIVE, it’s incredible. It is perfect for people who just want to make the damn movie and not make a career out of it.

Loaded it a week ago and I’ve already made a 4 min. music video, burned it with an additional slide show chapter using an iDVD template. Looks fantastic and was SIMPLE. I just can’t rave enough about it.

Had the old iMovie ’06 since it came out, made a 30 second Ken Burns effect on one pic “movie” and it was not that easy, so I never made another. With iLife ’08 I can’t wait to make another. I have to read tech stuff at work, so when I get home I just want to create fun stuff and not read another manual. THANK YOU STEVE! HOME RUN—AGAIN!
