&t”Apple will deliver the next version of the iPhone early next year,” Scott Moritz reports for TheStreet.com.
“A faster third-generation, or 3G, iPhone will be available sometime in the first quarter, say people familiar with the production plans,” Moritz reports. “The new iPhone should help quiet critics who were unimpressed by the 2.5G EDGE technology the first version used.”
Moritz reports, “The new 3G iPhone is expected to include features like global positioning for navigation services.”

You have to read between the lines with Moritz and TheStreet sometimes. There’s always something better coming down the pike, if you’re willing to wait for it. Of course, if you keeping waiting for the next best thing, you’ll never get anything. It’s one way to freeze the market for any product. Perhaps that’s Moritz’s and TheStreet’s intention – or maybe they’re just really, really interested in Apple’s iPhone for whatever reason(s). The best iPhone FUD just may be the vaporous promise of a next-gen iPhone. Please see the related articles below.
“3G chipsets… are real power hogs. Most phones now have battery lives of 2 to 3 hours and that’s due to these very power-hungry 3G chipsets… [iPhone] has 8 hours of talktime life. That’s really important when you start to use the Internet and want to use the phone to listen to music. We’ve got to see the battery lives for 3G get back up into the 5+ hour range. Hopefully we’ll see that late next year.” – Apple CEO Steve Jobs introducing iPhone to the UK this morning, September 18, 2007. [bold emphasis added by MacDailyNews]

Wasn’t this on the SAT?
If 1G is 2.5G and 2G is 3G, then 3G = ?
a) 4.5G
b) G whiz
c) G spot
d) G force
e) a and c
f) none of the above
This is a blatant ploy to slow iPhone sales.
The Street is short on AAPL.
Will the early adopters be whining again about the lack of 3G functionality in their phones?
I can see 3g perhaps (if AT&T;actually expands their network), but GPS? Why? No real need for it… and it sucks up battery and space quickly.
Now, if AT&T;expands their WiFi like what is present in the UK, and adds it for free to the service plan, or even for $2 extra, well, that would make a lot more sense…
You know, I’m still within my iPhone return period but I could NEVER go without this thing. I haven’t become so attached to a product since my first iPod in 2003. I wouldn’t give this up for anything in the world and would, if anything, buy the 3G model to go with it.
That’s why I never understood the crybaby early adopters. If I had the money to buy this months ago, Steve Jobs could’ve dropped the price by half and I wouldn’t have given a shit.
early adopters got pwnt again. lol.
MDN:The best iPhone FUD just may be the vaporous promise of a next-gen iPhone.
As usual, I disagree. *MY* iPhone has plenty of problems itself to create FUD without anyone’s help or the promise of a better one:
* Mail client only caches up to 100 messages
* GMail is, unbelievably, really really awful through POP, and has no iPhone-ified web interface. Talk about failing a key partnership opportunity!
* While mail is updating, the whole device hangs for a couple of seconds at a time.
* iPod “Podcasts” section lists vid podcasts, but only plays audio from them — you have to go to “video” section to see them. Not sure if this the same on the video-capable iPods? Annoying!
* Only the telephone ringtone is configurable. Other key sounds (most importantly the reminder alarm) are fixed, and very very soothing, not alarming at all. Bad for those of us who need stuff to be loud and attention-getting.
* Mail check interval is artificially and unnecessarily limited to a minimum interval of 15 minutes
* and of course, no iChat… just a mean decision by Apple, or possibly a battery-saving measure. Either way, it’s disappointing.
“iPod “Podcasts” section lists vid podcasts, but only plays audio from them”
Not on my iPhone. I’ve got the “Stump the Chef” video podcast under podcasts and it plays audio and video just fine. However, I did download the iPhone video version from the iTS and not the AppleTV version.

h) G-dog
By the way, I like the reference (d) to the Anime series “Battle of the Planets”.
NoSquirt — Thanks for the tip! I’ll try that tonight and see. Weird, though, that it would need a special one in order to work?
If you get a sec, try subscribing to Creative Cow or HomestarRunner vid podcasts and see if they work for you in “podcast” section, or if you have to go to “video”? Maybe it’s just mine!
We will not see 3G until 6-29-08…..As others have said the Street is full of it.
Jobs also left the door open for a 3G version of the iPhone somewhere down the line, but maintained that current 3G chipsets are “power hogs.” He said most of today’s 3G devices have battery lives that span only 2 to 3 hours, compared to the iPhone’s average 8 hours. “We’ve got to see the battery lives for 3G get back up into the 5+ hour range,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll see that late next year.” So says His Steveness.
Moritzzzzzzzzzzzz…………..
i wouldnt be supprised if the 3g iphone had some form of gps functionality. most 3g phones use agps, “a” being for asisted. it is essentially a weak gps reciever that uses phone masts to triangulate the position to speed up lock ons. its not as accurate as real gps, but fine for directions on foot. i had it on my motorola a1000 three years ago, i still havent seen a phone as good to this date (except for mayby a 3g iphone;)
Another iPhone rumor. /ignore

Apple rarely changes hardware at six month intervals. Usually it’s closer to a year. Announcing something at MacWorld would be about six months after iPhone was introduced. There’s no need for 3G at this time, and unless someone has a technical breakthrough which changes Apple’s stance on power usage, we won’t be seeing a 3G iPhone in the 1st Q.

FUD WARNING.
He is out to stall iPhone sales…
I could care less about 3G… I just need the iPhone to go to 16gig storage capacity and I am there.
Did anyone actually read what Steve Jobs just said…and I paraphrase…’3G phones suck battery life’.
This is another ploy to make everyone wait on an iPhone purchase and then make their stock tank when they don’t deliver on someone else’s speculation and rumor.
Is his name MorITZ or MorTIZ? Is MDN trying to be funny or can they not get his name right? Maybe this is too subtle for me.
MDN’s take is exactly correct. The gist of the article is to make people wait. That’s Moritz’s MO, modus operandi.

If a product does not work as planned, fine, its broke and you should take it back. But:
Awww Gee, doesn’t it come in any other color besides chrome and black???? 🙁
Darn. It does not make my Microsoft products work better . 🙁
Geeee, its got this glossy screen that makes me have to wipe it off when I get greassy fingerprints all over it. 🙁
Poooo, I does not do custom ring tones. 🙁 (OH wait– now it does and I can customize them, unlike any other phone in the world.) — 🙁 double poo. Why can’t I have access to EVERY tune in the world. Shucks. 🙁
Gee, maybe a Zune will make be happy. ????

MDN = Making. There is making fun and there is just being a royal pain in the a**.
I went to theStreet to read the article and make a comment. You cannot common on stories there. I looked at several other stories and if their articles are at the same level as their stock analysis,
they must be a real pack of dodo’s.
I think I’m just going to write off the whole group. Really, if your public image is more focused on hype and Apple hating, what good is your stock advice. ?????
