Woz talks iPhone, Segway, Prius speeding ticket, and more

Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer and the most feared member of the Silicon Valley Aftershocks Segway polo team, appears on the latest Segway Today Podcast.

Woz is a major advocate of the Segway Personal Transporter, and you’ll hear his thoughts on being a good Segway ambassador, Toyota Prius speeding tickets, waiting in line for an Apple iPhone, and a whole lot more.

  1. I used to ride a bike, when I was a kid!

If you want exercise, get a stationary bike, and stay off the streets. It’s too dangerous for everyone.

P.S. Bicycles get terrible mileage, if you consider how much food costs, which you conveniently ignore. I asked one bike rider what kind of mileage he got, and he said “ten miles to the burger.” Do the math. That puts bike riding in gas guzzling territory.

  2. I am also not a Prius defender…

But Ricky Bobby’s “logic” is so flawed it warrants comment:

    1) Ricky Bobby complains about the 100k miles life of the batteries (or kms – he switches between posts, and there is a significant difference in those distances – FYI 100,000 miles = 160,934.4 kms!!!). Very few people would drive a car beyond 100k kms or miles before selling the vehicle. This cost could be passed onto the next owner. ALSO the batteries have RECLAIMABLE nickel and lead (YES Ricky Bobby the word is LEAD not LED!). There are ALREADY facilities for extracting these metals from used batteries, and this is likely to increase.

    2) There is toxic waste produced producing fossil fuels. Sure there is waste produced for components for the Prius, but there are also waste products produced making “conventional” internal combustion vehicles – the Prius doesn’t eliminate these issues, but it also doesn’t INTRODUCE these problems

    3) As noted previously the nickel and lead mining is occuring with or without the Prius. The only thing the Prius production will do is increase prices for these commodities. The Prius and success of it will also lead to investment in ALTERNATIVE battery technologies that DO NOT use these products;

    a) Because as the cost is driven up on nickel and lead due to scarcity it becomes economically importamt to find alternatives
    b) It is in the interests and philosophy of this market to produce vehicles that are LESS impactful on the environment. Again look at internal combustion vehicles, the cars of TODAY are less damaging to the environment than those of even 5-10 years ago. New technologies may not be PERFECT, but you don’t dismiss them outright as a result! Well you can if you are a nit wit!

  3. For the 2008 model year, the EPA has ‘refined’ the way they test for MPG. Every car is taking a hit this year, some more than others. The Prius, under re-evaluation, is now rated to get only something in the neighborhood of 40-45 MPG (I don’t recall the exact number). A non-hybrid Honda Civic achieves mid-thirties.

For the record, I’m in the Honda business, and this information may be considered biased, coming from me, so do the research yourself if you’re interested in the facts.

  4. It’s very simple. Woz likes the Prius for good reasons. They are quiet, FAST, and fun to drive. They are cool. My wife loves them because they are QUIET while driving. That’s enough reason to like a car. Period.

All the greenness is a secondary, a bonus, or not, depending on your view. They are simply cool cars.

People buy the cars they think are cool. People buy Hummers because they think they are cool. It’s not about the batteries.

The Prius is pushing technology forward. That’s probably one strong reason why Woz likes them. And he’s right. They are only one step away from a pure electrical vehicle, plug in at night, drive by day. (In fact, there are conversion kits available for doing exactly that to the Prius, and hope is Toyota will release them like that in future.)

People buy foolish, wasteful, expensive, poor technologically designed vehicles every day. Buying a Prius is not one of them.

  5. DRINK THE KOOLAID! Eco-idiots, I love how you refute RB’s arguements which are referenced with blather from your nether-regions. Yep, I’m convinced. Theres nothing cool about a tiny little box with too little horsepower. Of course in LALA land theres no need for anything but being percieved as “cool”, but other areas actually have a need for “real” vehicles. You know the kind that won’t slide off the road at the first gust of winter wind, the kind that can drive over the snow mounts on unblowed roads. You know up here in the north, no one is ever on the radio begging Prius owners to help out in a state of emergency. Why not stop worshipping at the foot of your ludite religion and do whats right for PEOPLE.

  6. Wow, this has to be one of the dumbest threads in a long time, and that’s with no MDN comment.

What’s with all the hating here, people? Someone should point out that the Prius and Kathy Griffin are both pro-Windows. MDN could then chip in with some classic vitriol, and then we would have all bases covered.

  7. “Wow, this has to be one of the dumbest threads in a long time . . .”

Pretty dumb but my vote goes to the disability lawsuit thread.
Mostly for the self-absorbed and callous stupidity unrelated to the main topic.

  8. @willytheimpeached

Mate – I agree, a Prius is NOT a vehicle for ALL situations.

But for the average city dweller sitting in stop-start traffic that OCASSIONALLY breaks the 30 miles per hour speed barrier, then why not???

I most CERTAINLY do NOT subscribe to the end is nigh global warming rubbish. I am neither a climate change zealot or skeptic – I am a REALIST.

The fact is the climate is changing – it has before and will again – no matter WHAT we do.

And there is good reason to believe that humanity will NOT be wiped out by global climate changes.

HOWEVER – COMMON sense dictates that when you need hundreds of bhp to drag something across snow covered roads – knock yourself out – buy a Hummer, but they SAME comon sense dictates that if you are driving in downtown (pick your city) and stuck in a bumper-to-bumper 3 mile traffic jam most days, then something that requires less fuel, and doesn’t need massive bhp and torque is a SENSIBLE option, esspecially as by doing so you PRESERVE the LIMITED resources of gasoline REQUIRED for those that REALLY need a Hummer to drive across snow covered mountains!

That is what you climate change SKEPTICS don’t get as much as the Climate Change Zealots on the other EXTREME (EXTREMISTS are the enemoy of ANY debate). In your ABSOLUTE REJECTION of the need for vehicles like the PRIUS you are damaging the chances of vehciles like the Hummer and Ford F250 etc surviving, because there IS limited fossil fuels, and the more the inner urban dwelers adopt Prius like vehicles the LONGER people like you that wish to use vehicles that require large amounts of gasoline will be able to use them!

MORONS the lot of you – that is the climate change extremists (Zealots and Skeptics alike!)

Be a Climate Change REALIST – the only truly SUSTAINABLE position™ </pre>

    My 2 cents,

    Luke

  9. bought a Prius
    love it
    would buy another
i tell our friends they should too
most people who deride them haven’t ever driven one

    bought a Mac
    love it
    would buy another
i tell our friends they should too
most people who deride them haven’t ever used one

  10. I resent this thread. Buy me. I get 10 mpg. You need me to navigate the terrain of the supermall. I make you look cool. Women will want to give you me’s in the back seat of me.

    OOOrah.

MDNMW – makes, as in makes you look well-hung
