Computerworld: Calling Apple iPhone the best phone ever is biggest understatement of the decade

“A bit of background: I hate cell phones. They’re a necessary evil in terms of convenience, but with each latest and greatest model I bought, I became increasingly critical,” Michael DeAgonia reports for Computerworld.

“Potentially useful features were hidden underneath menus and submenus and sub-submenus, it couldn’t autosync with my Mac, Internet access was mediocre, and the user interface clunky… The result: clumsy hardware married to lousy software, new features without a new form,” DeAgonia reports.

Apple’s iPhone “is the first phone I’ve liked in well over six years,” DeAgonia reports. “To call the iPhone the best phone I’ve ever used is the biggest understatement of the decade. It’s like saying Jupiter is big, or infinity a long time. From the moment you pick it up, you can feel the weight and sturdiness of the phone, inspiring the sort of confidence you get from a quality build. The display is gorgeously integrated, the streamlined face covered by glass. Finally — a design worthy of being called a design!”

“But the attention to detail doesn’t stop there. The iPhone as a phone is actually remarkable, given that you can easily swap between multiple calls, connect them, separate them, put some on private … all without hanging up on any of the parties. I couldn’t do that with any other phone before and always assumed that feature was faulty. These are among the details I’ve discovered with constant use of my iPhone over the past two months,” DeAgonia reports.

DeAgonia reports, “However, the beauty of the iPhone lies beyond its deliciously simple shell and goes way beyond being just a phone. That beauty — and the iPhone’s success — lies with the way you interact with it. Use the multitouch screen, along with the changing set of ‘buttons’ and icons that adjust themselves to the task at hand, and you can’t help be reminded of classic science fiction, in which devices are so easy to use anyone can pick up anything and begin operating it. That’s what the iPhone is.”

  1. what amazes me is the number of people who hate the iPhone and why, because it is an Apple product. It is this weird Windows folks I hate Apple Syndrome. I’ve used lots of cell phones and use both Windows and OSX every day. That is the type of user you want to ask opinions of. These people who hate all things apple must have screw loose.

  2. I was a skeptic of all this high praise at first. That was until I purchased an iPhone. Articles such as these are well deserved as Apple has produced a fine piece of machinery. I’m doing things I never thought I could do with a cell phone (like typing this post) and Apple isnt kidding when they call it the best iPod ever made. Movies, man I can’t begin to describe how much of an improvement this is.

And this keyboard, I’ve got big, manly hands and I’m already typing pretty efficiently after a few days use. I dont know what the naysayers are griping about.

The keu to iPhone bliss however is WiFi. I can understand why one wouldnt be completely enamored with the device if their only web browsing experience is through EDGE. That’s a miserable existence.

  3. I turned Wi-fi off on my iPhone. It sucks up a lot of battery. I don’t use it to surf the net anyway. Edge is not as bad as it was made out to be. It’s no speed demon, but if you want to look something up, it’s totally useable.

I couldn’t imagine having to go back to the clunky Treo 750 I had before. I’d just get a free phone for calls and skip the rest of the features. Only iPhone makes the features worth the price.

  4. @R2
I was too. I didn’t even care about getting one until I kept reading about ’em. It was like the more I read about ’em, the more I wanted one. Then I made the mistake of actually holding and playing around with one that an acquaintance of mine got—talk about getting the fever!

    MW= “many” as in too “many” days b4 I get my iPhone! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cool hmm” style=”border:0;” />

  5. Funny that until the original unveiling of the iPhone, skeptics – and cell phone manufacturers – were insisting that cell phones were “different”, that Apple would fail because they didn’t understand the business, had no experience in it, etc.

Well, look who’s eating crow now! Apple thought different and created a real game changer.

  6. @blah…”Who needs an iPhone when you can buy a Nokia”.

I have a Nokia…what a counter-intuitive piece of junk. If you truly think that, then I have some nice land to sell you down in florida…hehehehe.

  7. “I really wonder about people who type “hehehehe” and aren’t 13-year old girls . . .”

I’m much more concerned about adults riding public transportation that nervously sniff their fingers while cowering and giggling to themselves uncontrollably.

    It’s all about priorities.

  8. It’s true that WiFi is a battery hog but that’s why Apple made it so easy to switch on and off. I only use it when I do my heavy afternoon blog browsing or want to watch some YouTube videos.

EDGE is good for a quick reference check or two and its not completely unbearable, but the difference is night and day and really brings out the iPhone’s full potential. I mean look at the QuickTime trailers you can watch on this thing, they take seconds to load with WiFi and about five minutes with EDGE. Same with YouTube. This is the stuff that really blows your mind away. Movie trailers on a phone? Incredible.

  9. This morning on the bus to work, I was surfing the web while listening to the new Lyle Lovett album that I bought on iTunes this morning. Then took a call from my wife, using the earphones/microphone on my refurb iPhone that arrived two days ago. It was all seamless.

    Thank you, Apple
