iPod supply dries up ahead of rumored September 5th Apple event

“A rumored September 5th special event that would bring new iPods is becoming increasingly likely after checks with multiple sources,” Aidan Malley reports for AppleInsider.

“AppleInsider’s own sources maintain that supplies of fifth-generation iPods and iPod nanos have been extremely low or non-existent at high-profile dealers, including Best Buy. This was a strong sign that Apple was clearing channel inventory ahead of completely new replacements, the insiders said,” Malley reports.

“Investigations into other potential candidates for the September 5th announcements hint at a possible expansion of licenses for iTunes content outside the US, but were unconfirmed as of press time,” Malley reports.

  1. I live in Canada, this past weekend Walmart had the iPod line on sale (I have seen this after a new model has been introduced, but this is the first time before a new model introduction.) Also Costco had the full iPod line on sale. They are well known for clearing out extra stock. It seems that if anyone has inventory they are trying to move it quickly.

  2. I’m in the market for a new iPod.

I have one that has enourmous amounts of music on it, but it’s from my Mac in my other house far away.

Contray to what some think, returning the music to a Mac from a iPod isn’t the best experience, especially since it’s well over 15000 songs.

So I need a new iPod for new music that I have been buying on this small capacity Mac and just burning to cd.

I’ll synch the new music with the old at my home machine and then place it all on the new iPod.

The old iPod will be retired next to my first and second generation iPods, or given away…

  3. What part of nobody wants to buy a Zune wannabe iPod do you MAC lemmings not understand? Apple is scaling back production of iPods because demand is almost non-existent—not because they might launch some super great iPods in the near future.

The writing is on the wall: Microsoft’s fabulous Zune is now the standard in portable media devices as is the awesome Zune Marketplace. Everything else is an also-ran.

Hey Apple, here are three hints for saving the iPod: Squirt, brown, & points. You’re welcome.

    Your potential. Our passion.™

  4. I’m afraid I have to go with Zune Tang on this. I’ve been using the standard two-ply stuff for years, but let me tell ya, after you’ve scraped the backfield with a Zune you’ll never go back! And with the brown color option, stains are almost non-existant. Plus I don’t have to rush out and buy whole cart loads of T.P. anymore. I simply keep a half dozen brown Zunes in the house and chuck them in the dishwasher. But to say there is no demand for the iPod is a stretch. I mean, I do like to listen to something every now and then when I’m away from home. So what I’m trying to say is that there is space in the world for both. T.P. is the only real loser.

A similar thing seems to be happening with other MP3 players. My sister in law who won’t buy Apple called my wife up saying that an MP3 player was being sold for a ridiculous discount. I didn’t get the name of the device. At least Apple don’t have to cut the price in half to clear out their inventory.

BTW has M$ announced the sale of a million Zunes yet? IIRC, their goal was for that to happen in June. I don’t remember hearing anything to that effect, which is unusual since I clearly remember when Apple announced their 100 million iPod sold.

  6. “… the majority of which would be based on NAND flash memory rather than the hard disks used in fifth-generation models.”

I just hope Jobs doesn’t do something dumb and put out a new iPod with less than 80 GB because flash is “the future”. People will cry bloody murder. We need more capacity, not less.

The tubby nano? I hope that thing is just a photoshopped rumor that was never true. Apple is about design–that one is not up to standards.

How about wifi and safari on the 6G? I’m sure I’m dreaming, but a guy can dream right?
