Apple releases iMovie 7.0.1 update for iMovie ‘08

Apple today released iMovie 7.0.1, an update to iMovie ’08 (which is version 7.0) which addresses issues associated with publishing to .Mac Web Gallery. It also improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues.

iMovie ’08 makes viewing and working with video as intuitive as enjoying your photos. A built-in library automatically organizes your video, so all the clips you’ve captured and movies you’ve created are just a click away. With its revolutionary interface, iMovie makes it quick and easy to browse your library and create new movies. And iMovie is built for sharing. In just a few steps, you can add movies to your website, publish them on YouTube, and create versions for iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV

iMovie 7.0.1 is available via Software Update and also as a standalone installer.

  1. Currently the Apple Store online is tracking iLife 08 at 2.5 stars out of 5 possible with 312 reviews posted be people with .Mac accounts.

iMovie 08 is bearing the brunt of the poor review, the rest of the software suite seems to be scoring well.

  2. Mac fan boys/girls, just can’t stand it or admit it when Apple releases a lemon. iMovie 6 is fine, except it’s getting dated on what types of video it can import, but hey, I would hate for the customer to actually be right once and ask for a program with more than 20% of the original features.

  3. Buy and use software that you like. No software publisher is under ANY obligation to EVER upgrade software beyond that which is published. If iMovie 6 was so great, continue using it; it hasn’t lost any of the capability that it had before the release of iMovie ’08. There are two Apple products that allow an upward migration to iMovie 6: FCP Express and FCP. Quite acting like Apple took something away from you.

Hey fanboi, you bet we will. However, unless Apple keeps updating the capable iMovie 6, chances are good it will eventually BREAK. So chances are we WILL lose the capability, unless we forever enshrine our Mac to the current OS and Quicktime versions.

And I won’t “quite” acting like anything just because you say so. When a consumer is unhappy about a product, it is their right, no their job, to make their unpleasantness known to the producer of said product.

Remind me why Apple sends me product surveys on a regular basis. So I can kiss their asses like you do?

  5. Some?
Sucks to be some, I guess.

But then, it has ALWAYS sucked to be poor. But don’t whine to me – I’m not poor, but I’ve been there and I managed just fine… And iMove 6 is fine and will ALWAYS be just as fine as ever on the CURRENT operating system.

Wanna upgrade and keep it fine? Not likely, chump. Deal with it. If you think that’s a “hard knock life”, go right ahead and think it.

    While we all laugh.

Nonsense. You are justified in voicing a complaint only if what was offered was not delivered. The descriptions, and demonstrations of iMovie ’08 explain exactly what you are getting. Don’t buy it if you don’t like it. Apple owes you nothing unless the product doesn’t perform to specs.

Also, to say that iMovie ’06 will likely “break” is equally ridiculous. True, things become outdate, but that is the nature of all things. When iLife ’06 was new it was a blow-away bargain at $79. Great movie editing, DVD production, photo organization, multitrack audio recording, and basic web design to boot…all for $79. Did you not get what you paid for?

Finally, calling someone a “fanboi”, (and especially to spell it “boi” ) is so 2005. It is a cliche, worn out, slang word that when used, lowers the user’s status in the argument. Do you know why Apple has fans? It’s because their products are usually very impressive and usually better than the competition. Apple is usually fair in their dealings with customers. This make people like them. No kool-aide has been consumed, the products are just good.

  7. Thomas, not “nonsense”. We are “justified” in voicing a complaint any time something doesn’t live up to our standards or what we’ve come to expect. iMovie’08 does not live up to what we’ve come to expect. Perhaps we could have lived with that had they named it “iMovie Lite”, then published another faster and “full-featured” version … possibly for the original $79 stand-alone. THAT would have set off many fewer grumbles … it would be worth the price.
OK, our right to complain is measured by how badly someone – Apple, in this case – messed up. This time, they put their size 9s in a big cow-pie.

  8. Some people seem to be missing the point of iLife software. The package was/is created to provide easy-to-use consumer friendly applications to be used in everyday life.

iMovie’06, due to feature creep (and possible Apple forgetting their own vision) reached the point where it was no longer intuitive and easy for ordinary home consumers to operate. Apple realized this (or had an engineer point it out to them) and decided to bring iMovie’08 back to the vision. Now we have a simple and powerful consumer friendly package once more.

I don’t dispute that iMovie’08 might not be as feature laden as iMovie’06, but as Apple has proven time and time again, more features are not everything.

Apple should have expected the backlash that they have experienced from some iMovie’06 users. As some have named themselves, these iMovie “power users” have suddenly been presented with an iMovie package that, at first glance, does not allow/create power users. To me, the fact that there are “power users”, is a clear indication that iMovie’06 had become too complicated.

Having said all this, Apple should have provided iMovie’06/iMovie HD on the iLife’08 install DVD as an optional installable package.

I’m lucky, I have a great job and can easily afford to go buy FCE. What your small arrogant mind fails to realize is that there are many people out there that cannot easily afford to upgrade FCE or FCP. That’s what made iMovie 6 so great, because it was so feature rich and affordable for just about everyone. This is why there are so many disgruntled iMovie users. This and the fact that iMovie 08 is missing the one most important feature.. a timeline. If iMovie 08 had kept a timeline, DVD chapter markers and better audio functionality, there would be very few, if any, complaints.

With all of your negativity and lack of understanding… truth be told, it sucks to be you.

  10. “This make people like them. No kool-aide has been consumed, the products are just good.”

Yeah, that’s right, but some people overdid it

They just like those screaming and crying girls in a rockstar concert. Sure, the dude is cool, his musics are hits; But i don’t think those are worthy enough to make people so crazy about him

  11. I am handing down my final decision on this discussion:

    1. Toasty and Solid are crybabies and incorrect.
    2. Thomas, Brian D., poo, and others defending iMovie ’08 are intelligent adults and correct.
    3. Ya is irrelevant.

If you like iMovie ’06 continue to use it and stop your wining. It is available free of charge. If you like iMovie ’08 go get yourself a copy of iLife, or buy a new Mac.

  12. Now I understand why MS apologists think we’re a bunch of lemmings. Because some of us are. Anyone who uses iMovie 06 understands that Apple has pulled the plug on a great piece of software. Those defending the move are obviously just defending all things Apple. There’s no reason for such blind loyalty. Don’t just think different. Think for yourself.
