Pioneer Press reviews Apple iMac: ‘An ideal family computer; Mac OS X puts Vista to shame’

“I’m playing with a loaner iMac and it’s a beauty,” Julio Ojeda-Zapata reports for The Pioneer Press.

“It’s an ideal family computer, taking up scant space with slab-on-a-stand construction much like that of its predecessor – but with a much-thinner body that will have even more folks mistaking it for just a monitor, with no Mac innards,” Ojeda-Zapata reports.

“The glossy display takes a bit of getting used to, especially if you’re enamored with the less-reflective screen on older iMacs. The new display certainly makes colors pop, just as the MacBook’s glossy screen does, but you’ll want to position the iMac so bright lights and large windows aren’t directly behind it or you may have trouble seeing stuff,” Ojeda-Zapata reports.

The new keyborads’ “thin design and squarish keys may cause consternation, just as the MacBook’s similarly Chiclet-y keyboard did at first, but I adore that laptop keyboard now. I think the iMac’s new keyboard will do me fine, too, after I’ve had a bit of practice on it,” Ojeda-Zapata reports.

“Mac OS X puts Vista to shame in terms of elegance, ease of use and overall security, and OS X is due for a major upgrade in October with even sweeter features,” Ojeda-Zapata reports. “As a family machine, the iMac seems unbeatable once you factor in the software installed on the Mac.”

  1. So when do all the complainers start whining about about the iMac glossy display? C’mon, let’s hear ’em.

It’s not like every CRT, monitor or television, you’ve ever used didn’t have a glossy display.

  2. “It’s not like every CRT, monitor or television, you’ve ever used didn’t have a glossy display.”

    ??

Funny, I’m sitting in front of ” rel=”nofollow”>two such devices at this moment. It’s quite revealing that so many are calling those of us who prefer a matte screen “whiners”. Looks like the windows people are right about us.

    🙁

    MW: ‘choice’

  3. As soon as your kids get near your iMac the screen will sport a matte finish thanks to thousands of greasy fingerprints. It’s free (just add kids).

MDN MW: “woman” – needed to create the kids in question

  4. “…It’s not like every CRT, monitor or television, you’ve ever used didn’t have a glossy display.”

    ————–

True, most “CRT” monitors and televisions did have a glossy display. Then, the technology advanced and we were given something better. LCD’s with a non-reflective, non-glossy, matte display.

  5. KingMe…
Just go to any third world country with a pile of money and bring home as many ankle biters as you want. The parents will be happy to sell one or two just to keep the rest of them alive for a while longer.

Doubtful? Just ask Angelina, Brad and Madonna! or come to NYC and see all white folkswith their Chinese girls and Guatemalans.

  6. Also, the full-length mirror in my bedroom that I use for adoring my nude self has a matte surface, too. Helps me avoid seeing my other personalities too easily.

And prevents you from noticing me in looking in through the window ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

You’re curvilicious, BTW. Saw your reflection in the iPhone lineup photos!

  7. Look at all the benefits of a glossy screen…

    – you can tell if it’s day or night out (if near a window)
    – you can tell when lamps burn out behind you (or fluorescent tubes on the ceiling)
    – you don’t have to bother with looking at all that shadow detail in photos and video… because it’s not there
    – you can justify getting those glasses a little sooner
    – you have an excuse for being hooked on pain meds for all the headaches
    – you never have to worry about Blofeld sneaking up on you.

    I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to see their reflection all day long. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”hmmm” style=”border:0;” />

MW: placed (as in glossy screens need to be placed in a pitch dark room)

  8. Microshaft:

    F’r SHAME, f’r shame, f’r shame!

Mama always said “Do your best at your work, for your work says a lot about the man.”

Vista is a big neon sign that says ‘Bill Gates blows.’

The trouble is, most Windows users believe their computing experience, which can be summed up as ‘Live with it or the floggings will only get worse,’ is the normal way of computing. Forgive the poor bastards, they don’t know any better.

    Bloody glossy screens

    Stupid Apple.

  10. If you really want a woman, just go to Brazil. A lot of guys who stay there for a while come back married. If you don’t want to go that far, Washington, D.C has more women per capita than any other city in the United States, I think. Get a job in D.C. and you can probably find yourself a babe.

  11. “but you’ll want to position the iMac so bright lights and large windows aren’t directly behind it”

I think he meant to say:

“but you’ll want to position the iMac so bright lights and large windows aren’t directly IN FRONT OF it “

  12. “Mac OS X puts Vista to shame…”

    Really? You think so, Ojeda-Zapata?

If OS X puts Vista to shame why is Apple’s market share so tiny? Certainly if Vista was so horrible and OS X so wonderful market share numbers would tell a different story.

Read it and weep, MAC lemmings: Vista is light years ahead of Leopard and all other future OSes Apple tries to burden you blind diehards with. The IT guys where work know it and so does everyone else. They don’t even have games for MACs. Morons.

    Your potential. Our passion.™

  13. Hey Zune Tang …

    Marketshare means nothing…

Whats the current stock prices for MSFT, DELL, and APPL ??

Then ask yourself which company is going in which direction ?
Then comment on my **NOTE** to you (above) ???
