Apple iPhone grabs 1% of Q3 07 worldwide smartphone market in one and a half days

Apple “sold 270,000 iPhones in its third fiscal quarter, ending on June 30th. Apple actually sold more iPhones in the last two calendar days of the quarter than most analysts had initially estimated,” Daniel Eran writes for RoughlyDrafted. Apple’s “iPhone launch blew past what most analysts originally figured.”

“Apple grabbed 1% of the entire worldwide smartphones market for Q3 2007 in just a day and a half [and] around 15% of ‘the week’s market share,’ [and] shipped 100% of the smartphone market ‘for mobiles with more than 128 MB of Flash.,'” Eran writes.

Obviously, anyone who tries to tell you Apple’s iPhone launch was a “failure” is a liar or an idiot or both.

  1. I’m a big mac fan, but even so, after a while, it gets tiresome hearing you refer to those who disagree with you as ‘idiots’ or ‘liars’.

Show a little respect for those who have another point of view.

  2. Amen, Olson. I’m in agreement of most of MDN’s sentiments but it’s snobbish junk like this that makes people dislike Apple fans. It’s much easier to attract with honey than vinegar. Categorically criticizing the opponent (or the neutrals) is tacky and childish.

  3. Liking, or disliking something is a point of view issue.

Ignoring the facts and stating the inverse to support a bias is the work of liars and politicians. (oh wait, that’s the department of redundancy department).

Staying put in the Windows world when you have the ability to choose a much better computing experience is the domain of idiots and corporate IT departments. (oftentimes, that’s not an oxymoron)

  4. MDN’s take doesn’t call anyone who disagrees with Apple or it’s fans an idiot or a liar. It calls anyone who says that the iPhone launch was a failure (it wasn’t) an idiot or a liar. Maybe MDN should use larger type. Maybe then people will actually read it.

  5. Absolutely MDN:

    They are either:

Liars – ie often paid MS shills

    or

Idiots – as in repeating parrot fashion what’s said before and unable to think for themselves.

Well done Eran Dilger, he has the best blog on the net by far.

And who needs Digg now it’s in bed with Microsoft?

  6. @Mikko,Someone Else, olson:

Please back up your statement with facts.

Compare the iPhone launch with any other phone launch, then ask why analists call it a “failure”.

No other cell phone has sold this amount EVER.

  7. Well, well, well, look at the paid Apple shills today. You MAC lemmings can be quite entertaining. Your little iPhone didn’t quite match the Zune in sales (1,000,000 Zunes vs. 27,000 iPhones) so you’re making excuses and inventing statistics to put a different spin on the truth: the iPhone is a dud.

The letdown has to be astonishing after the 6 month buildup and hype surrounding what is basically a Motorola Q without real buttons and a crappy, proprietary OS. Apple, just license Windows Mobile for your iPhone and be done with it. It’s the only way to save face with this complete disappointment on your hands.

    Your potential. Our passion.™

  8. Come on, fellow MDN’ers!

“olson,” “Someone Else,” and “Mikko” are, in fact, only ONE person, and we all know it. It’s extremely easy to post an opinion here and then agree with it wholeheartedly under a veritable host of pseudonyms.

We didn’t read ONE opinion and then TWO “seconds” . . . we were subjected to only ONE. And an insipid one at that.

  9. Ah, the Pune Tang speaks! Be sure to get the numbers right in your satire, though: It’s 270,000 iPhones, not 27,000.

And, oh, where IS the coming “Tele-Turd” from Microsloth, anyway? Still in development?

  10. “and shipped 100% of the smartphone market ‘for mobiles with more than 128 MB of Flash.,'” Eran writes.

Is this really true? 100%? Are there no other smartphones out there with as much storage as the iPhone?

  11. @cubert

True, standard is 64 MB and AFAIK some can add only another 64MB.

MDN MW Union, as in Apple has the perfect union of retail and online infrastructure coupled with a great scalable OS, and the most amazing software, they will be hard to beat. It’ll take a few years for anyone to catch up. Imagine the halo.

  12. @ Cubert, et al.

Yes this is true, Apple shipped 100% of the smartphones with more than 128 MB flash memory.

Read the article. One of the premises is how others twist the numbers to make themselves look better; something that Apple does little to none of.

  13. I am still asked at times whether Macs can truly do internet stuff. How should I call these people? Idiots seems pertinent to me, especially when coming from self-proclaimed computer power users.

  14. “Obviously, anyone who tries to tell you Apple’s iPhone launch was a ‘failure’ …”

… thinks you were born yesterday.

Frankly, while MDN has used pretty straight language – “liar”, “fool” – the real insulting people here are the ones who expected their readers to believe that. It shows they have absolutely no respect for their readers that they think they will believe that nonsense just because they’re told to. Far from being a “failure” it’s been one of the most successful product launches in the industry.

If people don’t like the product and don’t want to buy it, that’s fine. It won’t suit everyone. If hate Apple, or whatever that’s fine, too. That they insult their readers by inverting the truth stinks.

Who do they think they are? Steve Ballmer?
