RUMOR: Apple preps next-gen Apple iMacs for August 7th release

“Reliable sources have zeroed in further on the release date for Apple’s revamped iMac since our last report, pointing to an announcement on August 7,” Think Secret reports.

Full article – also with iWork rumors – here.

MacDailyNews Note: This report tracks closely with other iMac rumors we’ve read and heard: 20- and 24-inch models, no 17-inch, more vertical symmetry with screen placement (no large blank space at the bottom of the screen as with today’s models), and topping out with a 2.4GHz Santa Rosa processor. The new iMacs sound like they will be a significant upgrade of an already excellent, highly-regarded desktop.

also is reporting the Aug. 7 date for new, redesigned iMacs, and in addition, they think it will bring redesigned video iPods.
The site also says, contrary to Think Secret and others, that Apple will keep the 17-inch model.
If that size is a big seller for the educational market, it seems to me it would be an odd choice for Apple to discontinue it.

  2. “How does saying something many times makes it more factual?”

It works for MS with their sales and marketshare numbers. I hear ad nauseum that they have 87, 89, 90, 95, and 99 per cent of the personal computer, business computer, server, mobile OS, internet browser and business software markets. Who needs facts?

  3. I would have to say this is a case of “too little too late” for Apple. Have you seen Dell’s new laptops? Who’s gonna want one of these vaporware rumored iMac toys when Dell has already taken the lead and can ship today a stylish and powerful computing solution? Did I mention you can choose from 8 colors? And they run Vista which is better than whatever OS they put on MACS these days?

Nice try, Apple. Dell is about choice, like the 8 great colors to choose from and all the great flavors of magnificent Vista. Hey Cupertino, how does it feel to follow a trailblazer? I bet you never even thought about different colors for a product line. Dorks. What are you MAC lemmings gonna do when you find out the new MAC will only be available in 1 color?

    Your potential. Our passion.™

“At Microsoft’s annual gathering of financial analysts in Seattle last week, company chief Bill Gates took a swipe at Apple’s multicolored iMac packaging strategy in the course of a discussion of various Intel-based devices.

‘The one thing Apple’s providing now is leadership in colors,’ Gates said as he pointed out a red-colored Intel-based personal computer on display. “It won’t take long for us to catch up with that, I don’t think.”

too bad those wonderful flavors of vista are underpowered, bloated, expensive, thier microsoft products too (need one say more?). oh yeah, did you write your post on vista? if so, how many times did you have to tell UAC that you DID want to post on this website? =( too bad UAC is pretty much worthless. =(

mac hardware makes dell laptops look like biege boxes splattered with paint and plastic. =D

    Your frustration. Our fault.™

  6. @ Zune Tang

Zzzzzz…wake me when you develop a real sense of humour…

Colour… to copy Apple’s VERY old iBooks (is it 9 years now?)…but only a coloured lid, copying Sony…

Because both Dell and Sony are too cheap-ass to colour the whole thing…how REALLY tacky and embarrassing!

Going back to sleep now. Wake me again when there’s some REAL news.

  7. screw iMacs. What a waste of money. non-upgradeable POSs.

Where are the real Macintoshes? They’re gone. Mac Pro’s are too expensive for the average power-user. iMacs are for web surfing and little kids. Notebooks are for coffee shops. There is no Macintosh.

Thanks. Your posts always make me lough, often out loud. I am glad that you are willing to suffer the derision of people who don’t get that you are making fun of the windows world, in order to deliver your humorous comments.

  9. Apple would be crazy to get rid of the 17 inch iMac. —Jake

Totally agree. Many home users simply don’t want a big thing on their desks. Many small businesses use Macs in areas where space is at a premium. Not to mention schools…

IMHO, dropping the 17-inch iMac would be one of Apple’s dumbest decisions ever.

  10. @me
I wouldn’t call the iMac a “POS”, but it is night the Mac I need these days either. I am hoping that Apple reintroduces a headless Mac that fills the gap between the mini and the Pro models.

    @zune tang
MAC in all caps…. nice touch. A subtle irritant to all Mac lovers. LOL.

  11. Couple of things:

    1. This “zune tang” is horrible. He’s not the same guy who wrote on and on about the zune some months ago. That guy was smart and knew all the right buttons to push. This guys is an idiot posing as the real Zune Tang. Dude, you’re not good at it.

    Sorry I’m calling BS.

    2. On a different note. Where are all the guys yelling, “boohoo! A new iMac is going to cannibalize iPhone sales. iPhone! iPhone!”?

  12. God I hope this rumor is true about the iMac.

Been waiting a long time to upgrade my G4 desklamp. Was waiting for Leopard, but at this point I don’t care, I just need a new machine. I’ll upgrade the OS later.

I also think when it does come out it will be similar to an iPhone turned on its side, possibly with a multi-touch mouse for use in things like coverflow, which we’ll probably see more of in the new iLife apps and eventually Leopard.
