Apple struggles to meet demand for new LED-backlit MacBook Pro

“An ambitious move on the part of Apple Inc. to be amongst the first PC manufacturers to adopt eco-friendly LED backlit displays for its notebook designs is thus far causing the company slightly more grief than good,” Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider.

“The Cupertino-based Mac maker, which refreshed its MacBook Pro systems with Intel’s Santa Rosa-based underpinnings during the first week of June, has yet to catch up with demand for the new LED-lit 15-inch models. In recent weeks, in fact, the firm appears to have fallen further behind,” Lane reports.

“The Apple online store, which once estimated delivery of the 15-inch models at 5 to 7 business days, has recently push those ETAs out to 7 to 10 business days,” Lane reports.

  1. I ordered my C2D 2.4Ghz SR MBP matte with 160Gb 7200rpm HD on June the friggin 8th. Still has not even shipped yet. My “shipped by July 23rd” date is approaching very soon, and I’m nervous whether or not it will ship by then. I’m losing my patience…it’s been well over a month since I ordered it, and there is STILL no activity.

I ordered it through the education discount. Anyone in the same boat as me? 🙁

  2. I wasted a week calling local Apple Stores daily to check for availability of the 2.2 model. Answer always no, unless I wanted the glossy display. Order online on 13th, with delivery scheduled around the end of the month. Not totally confident Apple will make it.

Bigger question is cause: LED vendor supply issues or the quality control problems some have experienced (kernel panics, yellow screens etc.) Kepping fingers crossed…

  3. These LED backlit displays aren’t ready for primetime. Too many with yellow spots and uneven backlighting. This isn’t just an Apple issue either, it goes for all displays with LED backlights. They need to get the kinks out of the manufacturing process for sure.

  4. I ordered the $2499 model and only upgraded to the 7200rpm 160gb drive. It was originally scheduled to arrive on July 25th, but somehow I actually received it over 2 weeks ago…a full month early. It’s been awesome!

Feel bad for anyone who’s still waiting. : (

  5. Gee. Selling as many MacBook Pro’s as it can make. That sounds like a bunch of “grief” for sure… Sounds like a good move. Actually, for the typical buyer, I’m not even sure the LED backlighting is even a major consideration.

  6. Bought the 2.4 GHz from the Stanford Palo Alto Apple Store June 5th… There were some weird screen anomalies, and it would not run a vga projector initially. Most problems were fixed with the MBP update… and firmware update… still a few video driver bugs… but overall an absolutely amazing machine !

  7. I ordered my 2.4 7200 160gb June 30. Delivery was supposed to be 10 to 15 days but and update shows delivery as late as the end of the July 31. What the hell !!

Can I cancle a custom order from CDW Canada

  8. I really don’t know how anyone can conclude anything because shipping is deferred by 2 days. Even worse is coming to the conclusion that this somehow has something to do with the LED displays. Is it really likely that there will be hordes of people clamouring over these displays? If they are, it’s because they are Macs, and the 15″ MBP is the most popular MBP. I don’t know if it is the most sold Mac, but it probably is up there.

If there is a shortage, this may be because of
1- increased demand (most likely reason),
2- inadequate production (least likely reason because Apple must have anticipated increased demand given the trajectory it has been following and the publicity it has garnered of late), or
3- problems related to the middle man (delivery from assemblers in China… These things have to travel half the way around the world, and anything that affects this process can cause delays).

So, unless Apple publishes figures that indicate otherwise, I will assume demand is strong, period.

  9. I really think the problem is the lack of availability of 7200 drives. That was what apple told me specifically, and when they first came out the MBPs with 7200 drives were like 5 week waits.

Anyway, I ordered mine on the 6th of july and expect to have it here pretty soon.
