Intel memo leaks 45nm Quad-core Xeon processor frequencies (up to 3.16 GHz)

“Hot on the heels of the second generation Intel Core 2 Duo launch, an internal memo began making the rounds with Intel’s 45nm Xeon core frequencies,” Kristopher Kubicki reports for DailyTech.

Kubicki reports, ;These 45nm Xeons, based on the Penryn generation of processors, also feature the 1333 MHz front-side bus found on the new Core 2 Duo stepping. Each die features 6MB of L2 cache [for] a total of 12MB of L2 cache.”

  1. “also feature the 1333 MHz front-side bus found on the new Core 2 Duo stepping.”

Hey DaveMac… notice the “also” in there? These will ALSO feature. These are the new 45nm process chips.

  2. Quad Core, Octo Core BLAH!!!

Doesn’t mean SQUAT if the processors are I/O hobbled by a slow front side bus and even slower fat ass hard drives.

Sure if you have a video or audio file that needs a lot of CPU muscle to process, and if the software is optimized to use multi-cores then you’ll get the performance. But if you want to run multiple apps, video playing in mulitple windows, a 3D game or two, downloading or any other intense multi-tasking your just up sh*t creek, because the OctoPro just freezes up solid.

I kid you not and I’m not trolling. I’ve tried multi-tasking on a few OctoPro’s and it doesn’t nearly do the job as smoothly as a dual processor PowerMac G5.

Lack of bandwidth. Plain and simple.

  3. I guess the important thing is that Intel are moving very fast with the 45 nm process. Less heat and energy is good.

Also Apple needs to get into render farms and high end users again. The Mac Pro can be a big earner if they sell.

  4. Quad Core, Octo Core BLAH!!!

what you fail to see is the simple fact that 10.4 can’t properly handle more then 2 processing units whether they be in the form of separate cpus or in multi cores.

10.5 is said to handle this in a more optimized way.

    time will tell.

    yours truly. absentminded

  5. “Don’t these guys remember even the recent past? Speed kills! “

If history predicts the future, Mac users won’t have to worry. Windows PC companies will be out with machines with these processors about 6 months before Apple and get any kinks worked out before Apple starts using them..

  6. “Yes, but will it blend?”

Gold. Of course it passes over the conscious of these geekboys, but, Robert, champage comedy.

If only they would try and jam a laptop in the Blendtec. If they can stick several feet of hosing, why not a MBP.

  7. i just got a dual quad-core and it is pretty sweet. I run three VM’s on it: Vister, XP and Linux because I manage lots of Winders and Linux machines, as well as 4 XServes. The 8 cores is nice to have with the VM’s.
