Microsoft has recently released Office 2004 for Mac 11.3.6 Update which, according to Microsoft, “fixes a vulnerability that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code. This update also addresses an issue with using public folders in Entourage, and it contains the latest postal code information for Japanese addresses.”
The Update applies to: Office 2004 Standard Edition, Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition, Office 2004 Professional Edition, Word 2004, Excel 2004, PowerPoint 2004, Entourage 2004.

Microsoft products are vulnerable?
Well at least they didn’t do anything rash like update it to Universal Binary. Wouldn’t want to upset the delicate balance of monopoly forces.

We can complain as much as we like about Microsoft, but their Mac Business unit does people like me a huge favour in keeping Office for Mac up to date. I’m the sole Mac user in a company of around 400 people, and if it were not for Mac Office and its reasonable interoperability with Office for Windoze, my IT would chop me off at the knees.
To repeat; all credit to Microsoft’s Mac Business unit. Keep up the good work guys.

That’s just it though, Office for Mac is one of the worst products ever made. It’s absolutely full of bugs, slow, and extremely poorly designed.
If the community can just get the ODF standard accepted and MS’s version chucked out, Office for Mac would dissolve like an ice-cream on a hot summer sidewalk. The only thing stopping people from putting out a real alternative is that format issue as it destroys the market for anything non-Microsoft.
@Jeremy. Much of what you say is true, but I have to deal with the world as it is, not as it should be. So I need the best possible MS Office to keep me afloat as a Mac User in my workplace.

You probably do not use your Mac in business. I do and many files I receive from customers come in MS word or excel formats. I have tried to use NEO and Pages but they do not render the pages properly and thus are useless except for very light work. If either worked for these I would get rid of MS office. I do not see that happening anytime soon.
@ Micro Me: One of the reasons the world is “as it is” is because folks keep accepting — and thus perpetuating — it that way.
If you want to make the world as it should be, you have to stop accepting it as it is.
As a single hold-out against 400, your comments are hardly applicable in my case, CounterCorp. I have survived numerous corporate attempts to bludgeon me into Windoze use, including locking me out of the email system for two years. My Apple poster still hangs proudly on my office wall, and my Intel iMac is the first thing anybody entering my room sees.
But it’s best to know what you can change and what you can’t. I can’t change my organisation’s use of Windoze, but I can accommodate it. And the MS Mac business unit is helping me greatly in this regard.
When are the neooffice developers going to abandon their dead-end and start working on the native aqua port of Open Office to the Mac?

Don’t get me wrong, I get a lot of use out of NeoOffice, but it is so dependent on Java that it is slow and buggy. Hopefully this new OS X port of Open Office comes quickly.
I can’t believe Adobe could write an entirely new Creative Suite from the ground up in Universal Binary in a fraction of the time it’s taking Microsoft to deliver a universal binary of their word processing and spreadsheet apps. Actually, I can believe it. Hopefully the next UB version of Office will be the last one we’ll ever need on a Mac, because it’s clear MS isn’t interested in developing for the platform anymore.

What’s the use of NeoOffice and others without an integrated grammer checker (and some don’t even have a spell checker). I’m ready to switch, I really want to start having my files in ODF, its the future, but how many years?
Every time I install a Microsoft Office update they add some new invasive DRM. A while ago I reinstalled Office for Mac and installed the updates up to 11.3.3 I believe. You can find every previous update on the Microsoft website. I’m not installing any more of them. They can keep their sticky fingers out of my computer.
My toilet is snappier!

Hang in there! I’m amazed at both sides. Mac people can be total goofs. It’s like they have no sense of the business world. Msft still rules the business world and you have to deal with that. The fact that you have a Mac at all is a victory. Keep it up. Maybe soon there will two Macs.

I’m with you! I’m faced with the same situation. I depend on the Mac versions of MS Office. Without these, I wouldn’t be able to function in my job. Six years ago when I switched to the Mac platform, having MS Office compatibility between platforms was a major deciding force on my making the switch (I didn’t know then all the benefits of OS X and the Mac).
Don’t install this update! After I did my Mac mini crashed and the hard drive is gone. I took it to the apple store and I am the 6th person this has happened to this week.
