Analyst: iPhone in Europe to start out over EDGE, Wi-Fi; 3G iPhone to come later

“The first of Apple Inc.’s iPhones to ship in Europe this fall will function wirelessly over slower EDGE networks as well as in Wi-Fi hot spots, the same as in the U.S., according to an industry analyst based in Italy,” Matt Hamblen reports for Computerworld.

Hamblen reports, “The first version of iPhone in Europe ‘definitely will be on EDGE,’ said Gartner Inc. analyst Carolina Milanesi. The first European version could ship as early as October, based on information provided by Apple, she said. Apple has said it will ship there sometime in the fourth quarter.”

“Milanesi said in a telephone interview that she learned about the EDGE — enhanced data rates for GSM evolution — capability of the first European iPhone from ‘people working on the device in Taiwan,’ adding later that it was ‘common knowledge’ it would use EDGE before it was capable of handling the faster 3G, or third-generation, networks,” Hamblen reports.

Hamblen reports, “Milanesi said a 3G-ready iPhone for Europe could ship in March 2008, running over Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) networks in the range of 350Kbit/sec. to 700Kbit/sec. for download speeds.”

    Abbott: That’s the man’s name.

    Costello: That’s whose name?

    Abbott: Yeah.

Costello: Well go ahead and tell me.

    Abbott: That’s it.

    Costello: That’s who?

    Abbott: Yeah.

  2. I am getting really sick and tired of these analyst douchebags saying the “know” that apple is going to do this or that…

The only person who knows is SJ — and until he says it… or the apple.com says it… or shiller and his mullet say it… then it should be regarded as rumor and speculation — i swear… the market bounces on this asstards on a daily basis.

i am convinced that they make this shit up to buy stock cheap or sell it on bogus info.

these people have the word ANAL in their title for a reason.

  3. MDN TOTALLY MISSED THE POINT ABOUT THE DEMOCRATS CRITICISM OF THE AT&T’S EXCLUSIVE DEAL WITH APPLE

AND THEY ALSO MISLEAD THEIR AUDIENCE BY LEAVING OUT INFORMAITON!

The whole point of the debate was that consumers should be able to buy any mobile device and use it with any a carrier of their choosing. The mobile device should not be locked into one carrier. The debate went on to say carriers should not have the option of turning off features in mobile devices like like wi-fi.
Furthermore, one Democratic senator compared the iPhone on AT&T to a Ferrari stuck on a one lane 35 mph hi-way … the machine is capable of performing buy the infrastructure slows it down.
The whole point of the discussion was that consumers should be able to take their iPhone to Verizon, Sprint, or any carrier of their choosing… in other words, the consumer should have more choice.
WHATS COMMUNIST ABOUT THAT? DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH BEFORE YOU ACCEPT MDN’S ANALYSIS … the or several articles about this in WSJ.com; Businessweek.com; PcWorld.com, etc.

  4. Mac_Atty:

It was not an issue until the iPhone came out!

Fsck Verizon those assholes are the worst cultprits. Screw them!

This is just sour grapes from a bunch of loosers that would have done EXACTLY the same thing but they Fscked up!

Congress – shit what a bunch a corporate lackeys.

  5. There aren’t many analysts with a distinguished track record for predicting Apple’s future moves. Is Carolina Milanesi somehow different ?

If you look at the Wikipedia listing for EDGE coverage in Europe, it’s a bit patchy to put it mildly. Here in the UK it’s only Orange and T Mobile that have existing EDGE networks, but the rumours from elsewhere suggest that the preferred carriers are other companies.

As it seems impossible to reconcile all of these rumours, I think it’s better to wait and hear some official announcements.

  6. Mac_Atty did MDN readers a service by pointing out some obvious facts about the Congressional inquiry. Who’s going to read through 4 pages of comments to the original article to read some truth.

The Democrats are standing up for all the MDN readers who want to buy an cell phone and not be tied to AT&T or a two year contract. The exceptional quality and acceptance of the iPhone provided an opportunity to address the anti-consumer practices of the carriers.

Apple took the first step to breaking up the carrier control of the handset market by negotiating a “Think Different” approach with AT&T. The Democrats are asking if it’s time to open up the market by changing some rules.

Capitalism is a great system, but without rules, there’s no business incentive for a middle class, just rich owners and a poor working class.

  7. I hope this is a f’ing joke. It’s practically impossible to get a cell phone in Europe that doesn’t support 3G these days. Releasing a 2G phone onto the European market at Euro 600 – particularly one that is so focused on the web and web applications – would be a joke.

  8. @ The Other Steve,

“I hope Apple has thought about how to upgrade the old iPhones when 3G makes since. I’d hate to see first adopters left out in the cold.”

Yeah, it’s called buy a new iPhone.

3G requires specific hardware not in the iPhone.

  9. Everybody seems to have 3G phones now and they also like to watch TV on them. My Nokia friend’s prediction was that Apple will not sell iPhone unless it has 3G. It’s already a bit outdated. Of course everytime you put it on the dock it might upgrade it’s software. But when people who like to have the hottest phones require GPS, TV, good quality camera that can also shoot video, MMS etc. you really need that 3G. Nokia is not standing still and they also have phone designs ready that are just waiting for components to get cheaper and markets to be ready.

  10. Bad announcement, alot of people used to 3G will wait for the 3G model before buying an iphone.

Back to the drawing board Apple inc on this one. 3G has been available for over 3 Years now, alot of people will not settle for less or percieved less.
