Apple iPhone’s weakest link: AT&T; two days after iPhone launch, AT&T EDGE goes down

Cupertino, we have a problem.

Apple iPhone’s weakest link continues to be AT&T. We know, big surprise. God knows AT&T’s so-called “phone support” rivals the worst Windows box assembler’s.

So, first the activation fiascos that rendered Apple’s $600 devices into gorgeous, but useless iBricks, and now this:

“iPhone users across the U.S. were complaining Monday that AT&T Inc.’s wireless data network was down,” Nancy Gohring reports for IDG News Service.

“The network was down primarily in the West and Midwest, but by 7 p.m. on the East Coast, service was restored, according to Warner May, an AT&T spokesman. He said he didn’t know when the problems started,” Gohring reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Regardless of the situation, “we don’t know” seems to be the first thing AT&T employees are taught to say.

  1. It’s ironic that iPhone might enjoy the best service overseas, and not in the US.

Here in Japan, the wireless service is among the best. iPhone will feel at home here, and will be able to depend upon any of the providers. I look forward to iPhone’s arrival in Japan!

  2. I was prepared to hate AT&T because I had them a couple of years ago and hated them then. So far, it hasn’t been terrible. I’ve dropped a couple of calls, all in 1 certain area. No longer drop calls where Verizon used to cut me off. Called customer service today to turn on international roaming. Other than having to wait 10 minutes for someone to answer, they were very helpful and courteous.

  3. I find the accents of many of the mid- and southern-American states to be very annoying to listen to. I could never marry one of them. I know that’s being harsh, but it’s true. Very whiney. Oh, I’m mean today. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  4. Ugh… I am about sick and tired of people bashing the iPhone, AT&T, or Apple. Come on, this is a brand new product only days old. Expect some problems. If you can’t deal with that, then you should have waited to buy! Also, I am a huge Apple fan, but, the only answer I ever got around anything iPhone from people at the Apple Stores was “I Don’t Know”. So it isn’t only AT&T. Everyone needs to relax for a month or two and let problems get worked out. If there are still major issues in a couple months, then I’d say complaints are justified.

  5. I have had my iPhone since Friday and all I can say is Apple better bring on the third party applications or additional applications of it’s own pronto. Wanna transfer a word doc or an RTF (TextEdit) document to your iPhone – sorry. No can do. How do you transfer information from your Mac to your iPhone – information that does not normally reside in email, address book or bookmarks in Safari? Ya don’t. Too locked down so far. I have 14 days to decide if I’m sticking with this phone. It’s a GREAT phone as far as the built in features but it’s so limiting compared to my Palm Treo 650 in terms of exchanging information, holding information and running applications *offline*. Web 2.0 ain’t gonna cut it. We simply are not in an environment where we can depend on perfect network connectivity 24/7.

  6. BTW MDN, your RSS feed does NOT work in the iPhone. Safari complains that your feed is too slow or not responding!

    “Server Not Responding
We can’t get to the feed you requested right now. It may be too slow or unreachable.”

Says that every time, all the time but just for MDN.
