Mary Jo Foley: Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard looks like Microsoft’s Windows Vista

“I just sat through my second Steve Jobs keynote ever. (My first was MacWorld in New York in 2002.) What struck me at the June 11 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) event wasn’t the glitzy demos, the rockstar-like worship of Apple CEO Steve Jobs or the ‘I’m Steve Jobs’ parody video by the ‘I’m a PC’ guy. Instead, it was the excitement by the 5,000 WWDC attendees about many technologies in the forthcoming Mac OS X ‘Leopard’ release that already exist in Windows Vista,” Mary Jo Foley writes for ZDNet’s “All about Microsoft” blog.

“If you’ve seen Vista, there’s no way you could help but compare the feature-complete Leopard beta Jobs showcased with Windows Vista. And — surprise — Vista looked pretty darn up-to-date in comparison,” Mary Jo writes.

Mary Jo provides a list:
1. New Leopard Desktop: Not a whole lot different from Vista’s Aero and Sidebar.

MacDailyNews Take: Mary Jo’s timeline must have gone through the wash. Apple’s Aqua came first – way first, then Aero, Mary Jo. And Vista’s sidebar is Microsoft’s screwed up rip-off of Mac OS X Dashboard, not the Dock. Dashboard was released with Mac OS X Tiger on April 29, 2005.

2. New Finder: Many of the same capabilities as the integrated “Instant Search” in Vista (the subsystem that Google is trying to get the Department of Justice to rule as being anti-competitive). The new Leopard Coverflow viewing capability looked almost identical to Vista’s Flip 3D to me.

MacDailyNews Take: Mary Jo has timeline issues again. Spotlight was released with Mac OS X Tiger on April 29, 2005. Vista’s Flip 3D is an inefficient rip-off of Apple’s Exposé, previewed on June 23, 2003 and released as part of Mac OS X Panther on October 24, 2003. Cover Flow is simply a fourth Finder view option. It’s clear so far that Mary Jo probably shouldn’t be writing about technology.

3. QuickLook: Live file previews — just like the thumbnail preview capability available in Vista.

MacDailyNews Take: QuickLook allows users to view the contents of a file without even opening it. Vista’s “Live Icons” only shows thumbnail previews of files – something Macs have done for ages.

4. 64-bitness: Leopard is the first 64-bit only version of a desktop client. Vista comes in 32-bit and 64-bit varieties. And most expect Windows Seven will still be available in 32-bit flavors. Until 32-bit machines go away, it seems like a good idea to offer 32-bit operating systems.

MacDailyNews Take: Do they actually pay Mary Jo for this stuff? Leopard delivers full 64-bit and 32-bit compatibility in a single universal OS. Microsoft is many years behind.

5. Core animation: Not sure what the Vista comparison is here. The demo reminded me of Microsoft Max photo-sharing application.

MacDailyNews Take: Our mouths are agape at the abject stupidity on display here. The poor woman.

Mary Jo continues to plod on with her list, but it’s so insipidly stupid that we’re done wasting our time. In the end, Mary Jo asks, “So, Apple folks: What am I missing? I’m not trying to pull a Dvorak here and use this blog post for click bait.”

MacDailyNews Take: Which, of course, means that Mary Jo is trying to “pull a Dvorak,” but she’s so ill-informed that she can’t even approach that sewer-level standard of ignorant nonsense. This mess reads as if written by somebody’s mom, plucked at random by ZDNet out of some supermarket aisle, who’s clueless about technology past, present, and future. If she’s capable, which we seriously doubt after reading her article, she ought to be embarrassed, as should ZDNet.

  1. This folks, is the typical M$ media leader that all the completely uninformed sheep trust. She should get fired for simply spreading untruths…she is not ignorant…her bias is obvious and this is false reporting and FUD. Dan Rather had to hit the road…omygosh…how can this woman keep her job. Buncha sheep media clowns, including her bosses. Apple should give her a lifetime ban from any Apple events for just plain false reporting.

  2. Holiday’s over! Get the straight jacket from the dry cleaners and put it back where it belongs……On her! then send her back to the Cuckoo’s nest…..Not that Cuckoo’s have nests…..

They are all thieving bastards just like M$!!

  3. Perhaps Apple should’ve have chosen a hi-res picture of a Leopard for the background, instead of the MS-ish nature shot, to prevent any kind of unfortunate association with Vista.

And the transparent Menu bar was a surprise – but there’s likely an option in the Sys Prefs to make it ‘Tiger style’ or something similar.

  5. “I just sat through my second Steve Jobs keynote ever. (My first was MacWorld in New York in 2002.)”

I BOUGHT my very first computer, a G4 iMac, in 2002, and I know more about OS X vs Vista than she Foley does. It’s hard to believe that she knows what “pulling a Dvorak” is but has not even watched a single QuickTime stream of the 10 Stevenotes (2002 WWDC — 2007 MacWorld) since then, not counting special events !!

All this time, as well, the website XvsXP.com has had a running feature-by-feature comparison with screenshots and explanations. That would have given at least a working knowledge of Tiger before she ever saw Vista’s name changed from Longhorn.

It appears she wasn’t listening to the audience when Vista was “unveiled”, when everyone was telling each other how each feature was ripped off from Tiger, nor has she read a single David Pogue article about this in the NY Times.

The very last thing Foley should be doing at this point is telling the world that Leopard is a Vista rip-off. ZDnet should be hanging its head in shame for this one.

    MDN MW: kind
What kind of stuff has this gal been smokin’ ??

  6. Good point – now I think about it the green grass background does look a bit Vist’ish.

I can’t help but laugh to imagine Win-zealots reading that article and believing it!

She really ought not to be allowed to publish to anyone beyond kindergarten.

  7. Well, she’s wrong about a lot of stuff.
But, superficially, just by the look of screenshots, I too couldn’t help but being reminded of Vista looking at some of the stuff.
I was hoping such “flashy” stuff was being phased out.
The new transparent/mirroring Dock must go!

Personally, from a work point of view, I’m most interested in how well Spaces will work. Right now, for my work, I need a good Virtual Desktop solution, and unfortunately the pc variants work somewhat better than those I’ve tried on Mac.

The demo of Spaces looks excellent though.

Question, if anybody knows: Will it be possible to “program” the number pad for different desktops, so you can switch between ten 10 programs with a single click?

That’s how I do it right now on my (hopefully soon phased out) PC, and that enables a workflow that beats the hell out of exposé….

  8. Did anyone read through that entire interview posted by “her is the tools info”? Absolutely wonderful quote from Mary Ho…

“One of my funniest interview moments happened during the very first time I interviewed Bill Gates. I was brand new to covering technology. I was interviewing Gates on the show floor at Comdex in Las Vegas. We were out in the open in the Microsoft booth. Up came Steve Jobs while I was interviewing Gates. Gates and Jobs started chatting. I waited and waited. Finally I said to Jobs: “Do you think you could come back another time? I’m trying to do an interview here.” Gates said to me after Jobs walked off, “Do you know who that was?” I didn’t. Gates said: “He’s the head of Apple.” Yeah, not an auspicious beginning…but my very first story on Microsoft came out really well in spite of it all.”

Anyone suspect maybe a Microshit check is on the way for Ms. Mary Ho?

As a real journalist, I smell a huge rat in there. It’s just a little too butt-lickingly stupid to be honestly written. Even a slight bit of fact-checking would have caught most of those errors.

  9. You know, everywhere I go on the Internet these days, a specific group is getting more vocal, especially on forums and Blog comments, and it’s very annoying: These are Apple bashers. Worse than Mac Zealots are these Apple bashers! Apple Zealots just share their passion, sometimes a little misguided, but hey at least they do it because they love a company and its products. But these Apple bashers just go for the kill. Their sole aim is to shut up everything that is Apple and even turn everything around, like saying Apple is copying MS now. Pure FUD spreading. They defend Windows – with emphasis on defend – because they simply hate everything that is Apple, and everyone that says otherwise should be silenced.

  10. LOL. What a dimwit! Nothing like opening your mouth and removing all doubt, as they say.

However, it does how what the average user will be sold; saying that Vista is just as good … see, it even looks the similar … just like they did with Windows did in 1995.

  11. If I hadn’t read the link provided by “her is the tools info: ” I would have thought this slop was being blogged by Paris Hilton from prison. What other isolated ignoramus could come up with this. Now that I’ve read her background I assume she must be married to, or from a wealth. That would explain how someone so stupid could live so blissfully ignorant about something they claim to be immersed in.

    What an idiot!

  12. Wow I’m glad this lady is just a Journalist and not a doctor.

Mary Jo – Ready for your check up now let see check those ears!!

    Patient- Uhm that’s my foot

Mary Jo- Oh they both look alike couldn’t tell the difference

Nice mary jo you give people who actually want to write about mac for real. A very very very bad name. I am dumber for have read what your wrote thank you..

  13. I read the interview mentioned above as well. She has not been kind to Microsoft in many of her articles. However, it does seem as if MJ has been ‘watching Microsoft’ so closely, she hasn’t been paying any attention to Apple whatsoever.

Her error here is therefore understandable and unforgivable.

My biggest laugh from the article is the caption under her photo:
“She’s so full of karma, she glows of a warm shade of gold.”

  14. Okay, so Mary Jo doesn’t exactly have her facts straight. However, no need to rag on her… better to enlighten rather than insult. Besides, Vista did make it to the street well before Leopard, so it’s difficult for the uninformed to appreciate all of the issues. Leopard has some pretty cool stuff, but some how even Steve’s presentation was lacking in “wow” factor. Hey, I’m a long time Mac addict, but not a zealot – zealots tend to be blind and intolerant of the truth. And besides, zealots are polarizing and a real turn off to “would be Windows to Mac converts”. So, lighten up fellow, you’re beginning to sound a bit rabid.

  15. Actually, if you see the video interview of her, She says that she now gets paid by the click.

The name is now, ” Ms. Dovrak” and its called click bait. I just have to wonder what happens when the Mac starts to round the corner and the majority admit its a superior OS. They may have to put up with Vista, but they will long for Mac.

    Bruhahahaha ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

    MDN word “class” as in she has none. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
