Flash-based Apple iPod video on hold?

“Although general comments from memory module makers, in Taiwan or overseas, have all said that a NAND flash-based iPod video is listed in Apple’s plans, the exact launch schedule is still under question,” Esther Lam and Josephine Lien report for DIGITIMES.

“Some memory module makers in Taiwan are saying that over the third quarter Apple has placed monthly orders for about 20 million units (in 1Gbit equivalent units) of NAND flash, a quantity that suggests that Apple is planning for additional demand, and which the module makes are attributing to the flash-based iPod video,” Lam and Lien report.

“However based on recent price trends, one flash-related sales manager at a Taiwan memory module house believes that Apple may need to postpone its launch plans for the NAND flash-based iPod video beyond the third quarter as the product would not be competitive,” Lam and Josephine Lien report. “Another flash-related sales director… noted that Apple should be able to meet its launch schedule, but may opt to introduce the device with a lower storage capacity that the current HDD version.”

sometimes technology takes a step back in order to take a step forward, cd quality > mp3, HD > itunes etc, if mr average joe doesnt notive the difference, then it catches on, and ‘most’ people dont fill up an 30gb ipod

However, I think there is a big perception difference between an iPod that could hold 80 GB v. the “new and improved” iPod that only holds 40 GB. The difference with mp3s is that no one could take that many songs with you, or e-mail them around, previously, so the lower quality was offset by new capabilities. I don’t think the new capabilities of flash drives will be as apparent or even as desireable to consumers as moving from CDs to digital files.

The real difference could come in the overall form factor. If the new iPod uses a widescreen like the iPhone, it will have more “new and improved” features than simply replacing the HDD with a flash drive, and then a lower capacity may be more easily justified.

However, with the new iPod likely being aimed straight at video playback, storage capacity is going to be a key selling feature. On the flip side, Apple will be able to have “new” iPods quite regularly with increased flash drive capacity as supply improves, which could mean more regular updates.

  3. Flash memory vs Hard drives makes sense to reduce power consumption and size and weight.

But I’d rather have a widescreen video ipod with a HD now than wait a year for flash prices to be low enough.

  4. Let’s get back on track and leave poster’s personal lives out of this. Chrissy posts a lot of great comments so leave her be.

As for the new iPods, we’ve been waiting for an upgrade for some time. Maybe they could have both the HDD versions at 80GB or 100GB or whatever and introduce the flash-based ones at lower capacities until the price comes down. Or as Chrissy pointed out, multiple hard drives could do the trick.

  5. I’m a low life, scum eating dirt-bag who is a poor excuse for a human that hides behind a handle and gets his jollies off by outing others online. The absolute best example of a POS bag of skin taking up space on the planet.

  6. It doesn’t matter <member id=”Tommy Boy” real=”false” >

The information is out there for all to see – it’s not secret…

    Sometimes it’s nice to put a face to a name ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  7. Hides behind a handle, pfft. I’m out here every day working my ass off to ensure that the best quality brakes you can buy for your car are available to you and your family at all major auto parts outlets and repair shops. Do you know how borderline the auto parts industry is nowadays?

How can my post be considered “outing”? All I did was post a link to a public web page. By making a public web page you are outing yourself. If you find what you put on your own web page embarrassing then maybe a little self-editing is in order. I may have taken 7 years to finish college, but a least I’m smart enough that I don’t have a web page up that shows me tipping the cows here in beautiful Sandusky.

@Back on Track, sure “Chrissy posts a lot of great comments” but he also posts a lot of hateful comments that are offensive to a great many people, so the answer in no, we should shine a little light rather than “leave her be” (uhh Back on Track, Chrissy ain’t a “she”). With full-disclosure all people can make up their own minds based on what they see. Personally I think his biggest fault is that he likes cats.

  8. Hi there! Since everyone want to talk about me, here’s the deal…

I am transexual. I was born male. I am now female.
I kinda thought everyone knew that, because it’s certainly not a secret. Never has been. I’ve never tried to hide it.

So if you have a problem with that…

    Fuck off! =)

    Thanks, love ya!!!

  9. @ Tommy Boy

I thank you for making sure my car will stop when I want it to, every time. I also like that you do not hide behind a handle, and you email address is posted so we can contact you.

Though actually, I just tried to do so, and the email bounced, so you might want to look into that.

As for me, well, all you have to do is Google my name, and the very first entry you get is my MySpace, so, well done on your fine detective work. It doesn’t take long to find out that my real name is Christina Wiley. You’ll also see my name in the splash screen credits for Photoshop CS3. And if you play D&D, you’ll see my name in the imaging credits in roughly 1/3 of the books, since I worked at Wizards of the Coast for a number of years. If you know anything about stock photography, you might have heard of Photodisc, part of Getty Images. I ran their scanning department some years back, too.

If there is anything you’d like to discuss with me, feel free to send my a message on Myspace. I would love to hear about any issues you might have with me.

But posting random outings like this online is really not very classy, and actually says a lot more about you than it does about me. Ya know?

    Peace.
