CNET: The summer of Apple looms

“Apple is preparing for one of the most pivotal summers in its history,” Tom Krazit reports for CNET News. “On June 29, the company is expected to release the iPhone, perhaps one of the most hyped gadgets in history… But before it gets to the iPhone launch, Apple will pause next week to shift the spotlight back to its core Macintosh business.”

“On Monday, Jobs is scheduled to give the keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco… WWDC is expected to be dominated by Apple’s Leopard OS… Developers will walk away with a near-final copy of Leopard, and Jobs is expected to provide further details on some of the features inside the new release. Apple does not plan to ship the final version until October,” Krazit reports.

“While Leopard is certainly important to Apple’s developers, the rest of the world is likely to be looking for any new nuggets Jobs reveals about the iPhone. The iPhone, analysts argue, is more than just a new product for Apple. It’s an entirely new business that, if successful, will give the company three distinct product lines–Macintosh computers, iPods and the iPhone (not to mention a smaller fourth line, the Apple TV)–to maintain Apple’s strong growth,” Krazit reports.

Krazit reports, “The iPhone runs Mac OS X and Jobs promises it will deliver the ‘full Internet’ to a mobile phone. Moreover, he said, at the January Macworld conference: ‘We have reinvented the phone.'”

  1. Great timing! 2007 started off with a whimper otherwise known as the Vista launch, and now, 5 months later, everyone can’t stop talking about iPhone, Leopard, and Apple’s stock price.

  2. And, to add to the confusion, Krazit calls the operating system in the iPhone ‘Mac OS X’; there are already plenty of people who are incredulous about the iPhone running OS X (not Mac OS X) precisely because they confuse the two; Mr. Krazit isn’t helping by doing it himself too.

That said, he is basically right about everything. Apple is set to break records and set precedents on many levels, in the IT industry, as well as consumer electronics industry.

This is already one of those situations where people who don’t have any AAPL stock regret for not having bought it last year (or month, or even week), and those who do regret for not having bought more…

  3. Only four product lines? What about software?

As Steve says “it’s all about the software, the hardware is simply a pretty box to hold it all…”

Of course, you can’t have one with out the other, but you know what we mean here.

And let’s not even get started on the critical importance of Apple ‘wetware’.

MW: ‘often’ as in check MDN often…

  4. What’s up in the air is that he says the iPhone and the iPod are two separate product lines, where remember Steve repeated twice at the keynote ‘phone, iPod, and internet device’, meaning everything in one device.
I would like a separate iPod, like many, but if so, I would also want the internet features, so…you might as well throw in the phone and just keep it as one device. A $299 price point is essential, though, and sooner than later.

  5. “I regret not buying it four short years ago when it was one-eighteenth the value it is now!”

i i bought a tiny amount, 20 shares, when it was 15.86….. muahahahahahaha!

    Nobody on the road
    Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
    The summer’s out of reach
    Empty lake, empty streets
    The sun goes down alone
I’m drivin’ by Bill Gates’ house
Though I know he’s not at home

    But I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
You got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the summer of Apple has gone

I never will forget those ads
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how the iPhone made me crazy?
    Remember how Ballmer screamed?
    Now I can’t wait for it’s release
Cause babe, I’m gonna get one

    I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
I see you walkin’ real slow and you’re smilin’ at everyone
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the summer of Apple has gone

Out on the road today, I saw an iPod sticker on a cadillac
A little voice inside my head said, “don’t look back. you can never look back.”
I thought I knew what love was
    What did I know?
    Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but-

    I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
You got that top pulled down and that radio on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the summer of Apple has gone
