RUMOR: No external SIM slot, no iChat for initial iPhone release

Apple forthcoming iPhone “will not appear on your desktop as a removable drive,” Joshua Karp reports for The Boy Genius Report.

“There will not be an external SIM slot, contrary to the announcement at MacWorld,” Karp reports.

“iChat will not be included in the initial operating system,” Karp reports. “Safari for iPhone features tabbed browsing.”

More iPhone details dished in the full article here.

  1. 1. I wouldn’t expect to use it as a drive
    2. Who the heck is Karp to contradict what was said at Macworld? Also, who cares if the sim is not external?
    3. I don’t care if iChat is not included in the initial release, it’s easily added via software update.
    4. Tabbed browsing is great, I already expected that.

Who is this guy and why should anyone think he has credibility?

  2. It would be great if the iChat feature did get on the iPhone. So many people in Europe aren’t on AIM that this might wake them up to it. Or perhaps even .Mac will be revamped getting a decent majority on that would be helpful!

  3. And more disappointments to come I’m sure.

Let’s face it folks, the iPhone really doesn’t have anything that’s most people already have imlented with other devices or use better devices for.

The lust factor is high, just the cost and practical features are rather low at this point.

  4. Even if all of this were true, what does it take away from the user who wants to buy an iPhone and intends to use it normally without trying to hack the crap out of it?

It may be just good as it is with the software which comes with it.

  5. “Even if all of this were true, what does it take away from the user who wants to buy an iPhone and intends to use it normally without trying to hack the crap out of it?”

One of the advantages of it being a quadband GSM phone was the ability to use it globally, when you’re on trips for example. If there is no access to the SIM card then that idea is flushed down the toilet.

It means they don’t want you using the phone outside of America, outside of Cingular’s network.

This is a repost of the 9to5mac.com article (which is down right now like it was most of yesterday). In it, they said that this could apply to pre-production units only.

  6. No SIM access! The Apple is nuts. And so is Cingular.

So your on vacation or in Europe and your nice iPhone breaks. A user can’t quickly buy a phone and slide his SIM in? What is the proposal then? Your phone breaks in Europe and you can’t get your SIM out, what do you do?

No SIM access means this phone is not going to sell well overall.

I haven’t seen any portable device short of a laptop that offers better Web and email functionality than the iPhone’s Safari and Mail look to be. Photo browsing, too, looks better than I’ve seen, even compared to dedicated devices like the Epson P2000/P4000 or Flashtrax. Plus, the inter-app integration makes each of the individual functions more useful. Use the 2MP camera to make photos, add ’em to iPhoto, send ’em via email, and make a slide show. Dialing phone numbers direct from Google maps looks mighty handy, too. The web functionality will make this a very useful tool for finding local restaurants, bars, theaters, and other businesses. No more dialing 411.

I love my Treo, but the iPhone is a whole order of magnitude more useful.

Of course but what’s the percentage of iPhone owners traveling anywhere outside the US?
I hear you though, I do travel and just never roam. I have three SIM cards I use depending on where I am.

I say let’s wait and see.

  9. i don’t mean to be difficult…

but how the fsck are you supposed to stick in your SIM card if its not an accessable “slot” in the outside of the phone AND the back cover does not come off? Osmosis?

there has to be a SIM card because its a GSM phone, you wanker. Therefore, there has to be a way to insert and remove the SIM card.

  10. @ Sean

I don’t travel at all outside of the country.

But the idea that I won’t have access to the SIM still leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.

    It just doesn’t feel right.

One of the advantages of having GSM phones is the ability to have about three or four of them, in which you can easily switch just by changing out the SIM card.

I may not want to walk around with the iPhone on a beach, I might wish to go to a cheaper, throwaway phone. All I’d have to do is take the SIM out of my iPhone and put it inside my cheap Nokia. Simple.

How am I supposed to do this with the iPhone should the rumor prove true?

  11. “Save The Whales” posts under a host of different names, and every time he does his best to poo-poo the iPhone.

Recently he was “Private Joker, Gimme your War Face,” and among his MANY complaints are that the iP’s storage space is too small for his entire movie library, the included camera isn’t a Hasselblad, the processor isn’t octo-core yet, etc., etc.

The guy is but a dickless troll (and not a very bright one at that).

  12. @ the other steve

They’re saying the SIM is in there but it’s fixed inside the handset with no access to it.

The idea is ridiculous for numerous reasons. We’ll have to wait and see. If it’s untrue, then I hope the rumor is proven wrong well before June 29th. Don’t need this shit floating around out there for the next 25 days. It sounds really bad.

  13. @ R2,

No, I hear you. You are right.

Let’s just wait and see. It is possible but very unlikely that this bit turns out to be true.

I’ll also add that I never buy Rev A products from any OEM regardless so I’ll be watching from the sideline for a little while ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  14. “The iPhone really doesn’t have anything that’s most people already have imlented with other devices or use better devices for.”

Bull$h!t!!! The era of Star Trek-like technology begins in 25 days…..

  15. hey i got a great idea. let’s all freak out and sound the iPhone death knell before the phone’s even released.

when the iPhone was announced, some said “NO THIRD PARTY APPLICATIONZ OMFG IPHONE IS DOOM3D!!!” i said, hey, they want to keep the phone stable, and third party apps may happen if you partner with Apple and your software meets their requirements. sure enough, real SJ recently confirmed that they’re considering this path.

i’m so sick of reading about people freaking out for the last several months that the iPhone is RUMORED it won’t have this, it won’t do that, and OMG APPLE IS EVIL for not including whatever. ease up on the caffiene, fill your chill pill prescription to hold you over ’till the 29th, and decide then whether the iPhone suits you. if not, fine, go find a nice Symbian phone or something.

  16. “The guy is but a dickless troll (and not a very bright one at that).”

Reminds me of a few classic lines from Ghostbusters:

Dr Ray Stantz: Everything was fine with our system until the power grid was shut off by dickless here.
Walter Peck: They caused an explosion!
    Mayor: Is this true?
Dr. Peter Venkman: Yes, it’s true.
    [pause]
Dr. Peter Venkman: This man has no dick.
    Walter Peck: Jeez!
    [Charges at Venkman]
Mayor: Break it up! Hey, break this up! Break it up!
Walter Peck: All right, all right, all right!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Well, that’s what I heard!

  17. The release dates keep getting pushed out and the features keep getting less and less. Let’s add no vibrate, no video, no GPS, no 3G, anemic memory, no carrier choices, no Leopard, no no no. Generation 2 iPhone, probably announced for release in Q1 of 2008 but will be delayed until 2030 will probably be worth the wait.
