Report: AT&T not to offer iPhone insurance, Apple preps AppleCare for iPhone plan

“There will be no insurance offered for the iPhone from AT&T or Asurion, the firm AT&T uses for its insurance plans. This means customers who break or lose an iPhone will be unable to replace it at a nominal cost,” Think Secret reports.

“Apple does plan to include two years of free phone support with iPhone purchases, however, and an AppleCare for iPhone plan is in the works that would cover the hardware for a period of two years as well, similar to the AppleCare for iPod plan. Such a plan would not cover damage caused by the user, however, and pricing has yet to be determined for the AppleCare plan. Apple charges $59 for AppleCare for iPod, and $39 for AppleCare for iPod nano,” Think Secret reports.

“Also yet to be confirmed are reports from sources that Apple will allow iPhone activations through iTunes,” Think Secret reports.

  1. Maybe the AT&T 2 year contract will have language that covers the continued operation of the phone. Definitely a reason to buy at the Apple Store.

By the way, anyone know what the iPhone policy on Apple’s online store is going to be. If each retail outlet initially recieves just a handful of iPhones on the first day, what can one expect if an online order is placed?

Does that mean loss isn’t covered?

Either way it’s better than what you get with other expensive phones that carrier insurance won’t cover: NOTHING!

  3. @ M.X.N.T.4.1.

Hi, may I ask where you got that info? My UK house hold insurance explicitly excludes mobile phones and laptops, basically anything you can lose or have stolen OUTSIDE the house.

I’ve got a seperate insurance for my mobile, and they already replaced 2 of my phones, no problems.

On topic, my there’s LOTS of iPhone news bouncing around the closer we get to the event. I won’t believe anything until His Steveness says so.

  4. Wow.
If this is true, it may be the deal breaker for me. Even my treo is insured for 5 bucks a month – and I’ve replaced it once already at no charge.
$600 bucks and AT&T won’t cover user L&D like their other phones? Call me crazy, but more money should mean more service, no?

  5. I agree with Anon 88 BUT, a VERY SERIOUS BUT, even though they will not cover it you will still have these ignorant #%#^ jump at the phone. How can you justify spending that kind of money for a phone and then expect an insurance program to pay for it if you L or D it? Come on people use your head for something besides growing hair on. If you spend $600 on this phone and you do not buy a case for it along with the belt clip then you are a MORON. Even doubly you are a FOOL simply because you can not take care of your stuff. I have had more cellphones/laptops and the likes then I can count and I have NEVER lost, dropped, spilled something on them. When you are on the phone, don’t be doing ANYTHING else BUT talking on the phone!! When you are on your laptop, don’t be doing ANYTHING else but typing!! Judas Priest people are stupid!! Driving while on the phone? I hope they pass a law banning it and making the fine $10,000 no ?’s & no attorney’s getting you a lessor sentence. Same goes for any other thing your doing while driving. Stop being stupid ya morons!! PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOUR DOING!!! Don’t expect someone else (an insurance policy) to pay for your dumb azz mistakes!!

  6. Never has a post so reminded me of that of Full Metal Jacket. Go easy Taz…

I was simply saying that AT&T already offers this service for their other phones and IF it is true it seems odd that you will basically paying more for less service and optional features.

  7. Could not agree with you more. My point is, THIS is the TREND. Just keep giving more and getting less, and less, and even less! But people are so hung up on the latest greatest gadgets they will let there wallet (arse) rather then their BRAIN. Thats why us Mac’ees have the better performer. We already have the best so why sacrifice cuz of trends. There are more Mac’ees out there with the still better older macs then there are the new macs. Simply cuz our minds work before our wallets!!

  8. Although AT&T is not offering the insurance for the iPhone, I must tell you that I got my iPhone insured through a company called Chit Chat Cellular. I was standing in line outside an AT&T store, waiting for the iPhone, and some guys came over with a flyer advertising that they insured the iPhone. After purchasing my phone, I went to the store to find out what this is all about and apparently it was all true. They insured my iPhone. They offer insurance through a third party called My Digital Leash. They had two options for the insurance, one was a one year coverage for $69.95 and the other a two year coverage for $99.95. You just can’t beat it. I immediately purchased my insurance.. hell, I paid $600 for my phone, I though it a smart idea to insure it. The store I purchased the insurance from is apparentlyy the only store that is insuring the iPhone and they were located on 152 st and US1 in Miami. Their phone # for anyone who is interested is (305) 234-8899.

Don’t let AT&T or Apple keep you from insuring your very expensive phone. Insure it NOW, I did!!
