McCain would ask Microsoft CEO Ballmer to serve on cabinet regarding tech issues

“Republican presidential hopeful John McCain yesterday attended a technology conference and came out against Net Neutrality,” Arlen Parsa blogs for The Daily Background.

“The 70 year old presidential hopeful also said that he would ask Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to serve on his cabinet to deal with technology issues if elected. He did not however say what position Ballmer might be hired in, but did joke that he might consider him for a diplomatic position, such as ambassador to China,” Parsa reports.

“Ballmer is not known in the tech industry for his diplomatic prowess: he once threw a chair across his office saying he would ‘fucking kill Google’ after learning that a prized employee had defected to the search giant,” Parsa reports.

Asking Steve Ballmer to take a cabinet seat to deal with technology issues would be like asking Rob Glaser to join the board of Weight Watchers.

  1. When McCain stepped out of line with the NeoCons, they attempted a character assasination on him (those NeoCons are a despicable bunch), now he’s become another shill for them. He’s pathetic.

  2. Wow. Personal opinions on Ballmer aside, there would obviously be potential for massive conflict of interest involving Microsoft if Ballmer were to take a cabinet position. Even if he sold off his shares.

  3. Well, there he goes again..

I mean John McCain really knows how to mess up (nice way of putting it) a wet dream…

Not that I was even thinking about or going to vote for here in the first place – but hear he goes off again – pisses off a whole group of folks who might want to vote for the man albeit I don’t know why and who are collective know as MAC voters…

The man really doesn’t want to be elected – does he!

  4. I don’t fear amnesty, immigrants or people who might be different than myself.

What really scares me are those nutjobs who use religion as an excuse to push their agenda on the majority and can’t use data or critical thought to make good decisions regarding the country as a whole. They don’t have a screw loose. They just don’t have screws.

  5. “Republican presidential hopeful John McCain” has just revealed his stupidity and how out-of-touch he is.

Most people in the computer world (those from all platforms) consider Ballmer either despicable (if you’re on the Apple side), contemptible (if you’re ‘Unix’ or just inbetween) or just plain embarrassing (if you’re ‘Microsoft’).

John McCain has just shot himself in the foot!

  6. If Ballmer’s reading this, here are a couple of Chinese phrases for ya’ in case you get the Diplomatic job (in Simplified Han).

    开发员 开发员 开发员
    (Developers, developers, developers…)

    放弃它为我
    (Gives it up for me)

    我去与性交的杀害Google
(I go with the sexual intercourse kill Google)

Hey, that translation widgets useful after all!

  7. Why is it that the little people have to get screwed to save the big corporations ? I’ll bet Bill G is pushing this in order to save MS from Balmer. Thank God McCain doesn’t stand a chance of winning.

On the other hand, there would be a massive conflict of interest and the feds would have to get rid of all MS products. Hey, I think I feel safer already.

I take it all back. McCain in 2008. Ya!

  8. Well, if nothing else perhaps Ballmer would do a better job in spell-checking MDN headlines. This, is of course regrading this one.

And geology1966, no matter what you think, it really isn’t polite to call anyone, including Mr. McCain, a stupid old man.

  9. Not even Windows fanboys would think this is a good idea.

I picked up a PC mag a few years back and was stunned by the level of vitriol directed at MS. Even their die-hard users don’t trust ’em.

First, he caved to the creationists. Then, he embraced torture. Now this. For a once-principled guy who had even this liberal’s grudging respect, you sure know how to deep-six your ticket, John. Sad.

    Another John Flipflopper, huh?

  11. Yikes… I’m registered Republican, and would vote Democrat if this guy became the Republican nominee.

Look, I respect your war record dood, and what you did in Vietnam, was very stand up. But sorry I just can’t stomache your politics. At all.

It’s kinda sad how politics has degenerated into a selection between the least terrible of a group of choices, as anyone of quality stays out of the race due to the savagery from the media.

I think the last great president we had was Reagan, and I doubt we’ll have another great president like him in my lifetime. Everyone since him has sucked in one way or another.

  12. MacFreak,

Oh no, Alfred E. Newman was on that ticket from the start. In contrast, McCain once took principled and unpopular stands for comprehensive campaign finance reform and against torture. He did so vocally and tenaciously, despite the risk of making powerful enemies and no friends among an electorate that seemed not to care. That takes guts. Unfortunately, he seems to have decided that it’s better to be practical than right. Unfortunately, this bit of news shows that he’s a lot less adept at being practical.

    End of OT soapbox.
