AT&T accelerates re-branding of Cingular stores ahead of Apple’s iPhone debut

Apple Store“AT&T on Monday confirmed plans to accelerate the re-branding of Cingular wireless stores under the AT&T umbrella ahead of Apple’s iPhone roll-out, which the carrier is billing as ‘one of the most highly anticipated wireless products in recent history,'” Katie Marsal reported Monday for AppleInsider.

“Overnight, AT&T kicked off the final phase of the initiative by replacing the Cingular brand with AT&T on all in-store signage, store kiosks, and point-of-sale materials in approximately 1,800 company-owned wireless retail stores. In addition, key stores in major markets also unveiled new exterior signage displaying the new brand,” Marsal reports.

“The nation’s largest wireless carrier said the decision to step up the branding campaign is based on research that indicates that consumer awareness of AT&T is high and ahead of expectations,” Marsal reports.

Marsal reports, “The San Antonio-based telecommunications firm said the store makeovers are also critical to prepare for the late-June launch of the Apple iPhone, for which it will be the exclusive wireless provider in the United States. Many company-owned stores have also installed kiosks promoting the complete array of AT&T services — wireless, high speed Internet, TV and home phone.”

“As part of the transition, AT&T said it plans to slowly phase out the use of Cingular’s orange “Jack” logo but will continue to use the color orange in conjunction with wireless services from AT&T,” Marsal reports.

  1. Still waiting for Mac to revert to Macintosh, Thomson to revert to RCA, Pontiac to revert to Maxwell and gas to revert to 26 cents a gallon.

The last two could happen: Who’da thunk “telegraph,” even if vestigial, could be part of a corporate name in the 21st century — 20th Century Fox notwithstanding.

  2. AT&T removed the CINGULAR “Jack” from the NASCAR sponsored cars and replaced it with the AT&T “World”

    Still Kept the ORANGE.

They did have help on the logo change. They had a court give ’em permission.

  3. Well, AT&T certainly has drunk the coolaid.

All those thinking that the iPhone will be copied, and isn’t a big change from other phones.. bla bla bla..

    Consider it’s radically changing AT&T:
    1. Effecting the roll out of their rebranding stores.
    2. Prominantly mentioned in a graduation speech by the company CEO.

The product is a full month away, and has never been held by consumers, and it’s already a juggernaught. Apple just has to make sure the device works as advertised, is refined and pleasant to use (which it seems like it already is):

“A few of us have been using the iPhone a lot,” Jobs said during his question and answer session. “If you wanted it back, you would have to pry it from our dead hands.”

I’m inclined to think this thing has more legs than even the most rabid Apple fanbois imagine.

MDN “bring” as in BRING ME MY IPHONE!
