More blood on Apple iPod’s Click Wheel: Microsoft pulls plug on Portable Media Center

Apple Store“Along with the great American novel, a second World Cup for the England football team, the ‘iPod Killer’ is shaping up to be a typical great unresolved quest,” Alex Watson reports for Custom PC.

Watson reports, “It’s not for want of trying though – Microsoft in particular has made plenty of attempts to cut Apple’s white MP3 player down to size. It seems the company is now putting all its faith in Zune and Windows Mobile, with Portable Media Center devices – remmber them? Slightly less cumbersome versions of fully fledged Media Center PCs – are being officially killed off.”

“The sharp eyed team at Ars Technica have spotted a newsgroup posting… from Microsoft’s David Bono confirming PMCs are going the way of the dodo,” Watson reports.

Watson reports, “We only ever reviewed one, Creative’s Zen PMC, and derided its clunky, DRM ridden approach and beefy size. Funnily enough, most US reviews have echoed these very same complaints in their reviews of the Zune, and with Microsoft quiet on the device’s actual sales figures, it seems doubtful Steve Jobs is losing any sleep just yet.”
