Apple’s switch to LED displays could reduces power consumption by 12-percent

Apple Store“Apple chief executive Steve Jobs has revealed that the company will substitute light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for the fluorescent lamps now used to backlight Macs’ flat-panel screen displays, confirming rumours that first surfaced in January,” Gregg Keizer reports for Computerworld.

Keizer reports, “By turning to LEDs, Apple can eliminate the mercury used in fluorescent lighting. ‘We plan to introduce our first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007,’ Jobs said.”

“According to Cree, a manufacturer of LED backlighting, the technology reduces power consumption by 12% from a traditional fluorescent tube. Other benefits include a more even distribution of light and truer colours,” Keizer reports.

  1. This LED backlight technology is going to be a very big deal in the creative Mac community. The colors are so very much better that the competition will be labeled “sucky”. If the production volumes get boosted up, the price too will drop.

You just have to love the march of technology.

  2. Like many wonders of state-of-the-art modern technology, these newer and better monitors cost as much as family car. Oh, they work all right. It’s just that by the time you finish paying off the loan for one of these new fangled monitors something better and less expensive would have been on the market for half a decade. Then you have to explain to the wife why you hadn’t taken her for a vacation in years, why the kids haven’t any new clothes, and why the rest of the family shuns you. Stick with a LCD, it’ll make your life more bearable.

  3. Seve M,
There is soon to be an external connector for PCI- Express. So just like eSATA for external hard drives, you could use a graphics card in an external enclosure. This will be awesome. Just imagine, if Apple puts these connectors on the Mac Mini, you could actually use one of the new nVidia 8800 GTX cards! And if the enclosure has it’s own power supply then it doesn’t matter how much juice it draws. And you could upgrade at any time. Now this would really be sweet.
