Researchers: Apple iPhone may eclipse Windows Mobile market share by 2008

“Apple may grab as much as 6 percent of the US mobile phone market in the next year – giving it a slightly stronger footprint in the market than rival Microsoft, a report claims,” Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK.

Evans reports, “Researchers at Markitecture surveyed 1,300 mobile phone users across the US to reach its projected figures.”

“6 percent of those surveyed described themselves as likely to buy an iPhone in the next year,” Evans reports.

“Microsoft holds just 5.6 percent of the mobile phone market with its Windows Mobile software – but the Markitecture survey shows Apple could exceed that share within a year of the release of the iPhone,” Evans reports.

MacDailyNews Note: There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer (aka “Big Dummy”), April 30, 2007, USA Today

Microsoft CEO Ballmer laughs at Apple iPhone on CNBC-TV (January 17, 2007):

  1. Ballmer also said this:

“But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I’d prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get.

Sure he’d prefer 60-80%, but HE HIMSELF ONLY HAS ABOUT 5%!!!!!

    What a dope!

  2. Actually, Windows Mobile has roughly 6% of the Smartphone market – a small subset of the total cellphone market. In terms of numbers of phones, that’s around 4m units, which is a mere 0.4% of the total market.

Jobs is aiming for (and will undoubtedly get) 1% share, more than double that enjoyed by Microsoft.

What’s more, MSFT’s share has come largely at the expense of Palm. I see their sales as perhaps the most vulnerable of all to the launch of the iPhone.

  3. This prediction assumes that MS mobile is going to stay stagnant at 5.1%. I doubt that. When the iPhone hits and is a big success as we suspect, what do you think will happen. Phone makers are going to attempt to add iPhone-like capabilities to their phones. Many are going to turn to Windows mobile for lack of an alternative. Apple isn’t going to sell them an OS. No… the success of iPhone may be the best thing that can happen to Windows mobile.

  4. Apple is projecting 1% of 1.3 billion sales. Microsoft thinks Apple will take 2-3% market share and this firm thinks Apple will get 6%. The product hasn’t even shipped yet.

Consider the fact that the Zune didn’t eat into Apple’s share they bit into the hand that used to feed them. The iPhone will compete directly with Windows mobile so the market share that Apple gets will be from Windows. They will also add numbers to the total Smart phone market but Microsoft’s share WILL actually decline. Boy won’t that be sweet in my morning coffee.

    Cheers
