Toronto Apple dealer says Apple TV ‘flying off the shelves’

Apple Store“Canadian consumers can’t buy TV shows and movies through iTunes yet. But that’s no reason Apple dealers shouldn’t be enthusiastic about offering Apple TV to their customers, according to a member of the Apple Independent Retailers Council,” Kathleen Sibley reports for IT Business.

Sibley reports, “Ron Paley, also president of authorized Apple reseller Carbon Computing in Toronto, said the $349 (Canadian) device has been flying off the shelves.”

“We’re selling them as fast as we get them and it will keep growing in popularity,” says Paley,” Sibley reports.

Sibley reports, “Apple TV, a 20×20-centimetre box, works by wirelessly syncing to an iTunes library and connects to a widescreen TV via an HDMI port or component video and audio parts. It also comes with a built-in 40 GB hard drive, allowing you to stream and store any content from an iTunes library, including music and podcasts along with TV shows, video clips and movies.”

Sibley reports, “The fact that Canadians can’t buy iTunes content for TV yet is irrelevant, says Paley. ‘A lot of people have content on their Macs and PCs to begin with and you can put other content into iTunes,’ says Paley. ‘Is it as useful as it will be in a month’s time? No, but it will be.'”

  1. MacBill why all the negativity and angst?

I’ve personally been to Carbon recently, and they in fact said they were sold out.

Give your head a shake, dude.

  2. HD size is relatively unimportant if you are streaming the media from a central Mac. I use a 750 GB HD driving a MacMini as my media center. The mini is connected to the hub on the AirPort Extreme. There is NO need to put you music or movies on the Apple TV HD itself. Photos do need to go on to the Apple TV.

I suspect that the HD is really there for future DRM enabled movie rentals from the iTunes Store.

As a previous poster noted, Handbrake can convert virtually all DVDs (8 GB) into DVD quality movies (1.5-2.5 GB) compatible with iTunes. These movies stream just fine….

Note that at this high quality, these movies will not transfer to your iPOD so they have to be separately encoded for the iPOD.

  3. Podcasts are available in CA just as they are in the state – I believe – some Canook verify this please (Mom’s side is from Edmonton).

Suffice to say, AppleTV is an elegant way to start watching original – and free – content via Podcasts, and this market will surely grow.

Major studio’s must be really scared about independants, podcasts, and youtube…

  4. Yes Podcasts are the same here in Canada as in the US. TV and movies though aren’t. I understand the TV show issue as reasoned in a post above, but not movies. It seems like a no-brainer unless distribution rights in Canada is held by a third party.

  5. I think it’s been selling well here in Canada. Having no content from iTunes is just fine by me. It’s a great way to stream all my music, DVD’s and everything else to my home theater set up while having a display to pick my songs, movies etc via the remote. Actually very handy. Why wouldn’t you want one of these? Also, to all of you who say Canadians are stupid, where does this come from? I’d like know what that’s based on. Please, be a little less ignorant about your neigbours to the north and in return, we’ll stop thinking you’re all rednecks who misunderstand democracy.

  6. Now let’s be honest. If you think Bush is stupid because of the way he talks (take a class in Texan, eh?), you’re looking at the surface. By that same standard, Steven Hawkings is just another dribbling moron. Fortunately, most people have learned to judge a man by the content of his character. After all, that’s why you Canadians elected Stephen Harper, who is every bit as conservative as Bush — if not more so. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

    1. Stupid Canadians? Right. You’re the ones who voted in a man for who English is a second language. Twice A preschooler is more articulate.

If you’re going to insult someone’s language skills, you might want to proofread your post first.

  8. I’m always amazed at the exchanges between US and Canadian citizens in this and other forums.

As a US citizen who is a “permanent resident” of Canada (5+ years) I can truthfully say both parties tend to think negatively towards each other – typically for no real valid reason.

For some reason Americans tend to think of Canadians as backwards and technologically and politically impaired.

On the other hand, Canadians are all too willing to think the worst about Americans. Unfortunately, this negativism has become even more pronounced over the last 6 years.

Frankly, having lived and worked in both countries, I can tell you there are very minimal differences. These differences are on the level of: 1) “Tim Hortons” versus “Dunkin Donuts”; 2) the “NFL” versus the “NHL”; and 3) Serving in “Iraq AND Afganistan” vesus just “Afganistan”.

  9. Overpriced and underpowered. Kind of like my battery-powered friend, who I call \’Mr. Blue\’.

Let the stupid Canadians be the early adopters on this one.

As a Canadian, all I have to say is: we all know what the Public Education situation is like in the US. Don’t even get me started. Work on getting that ‘Intelligent Design’ crowd down before you start talking about the intelligence level of other developed countries.

  10. Now let’s be honest. If you think Bush is stupid because of the way he talks (take a class in Texan, eh?), you’re looking at the surface. By that same standard, Steven Hawkings is just another dribbling moron

Okay. A Republican just compared George Bush to Stephen Hawking(sp). Dear God.

Are we done here? Canadians win on brains. As usual.

  11. @An American living in Canada
Well said. But it is damn hard not to drop my intelligence to the level of that illiterate person who thinks being able to speak two languages is somehow worse than speaking one. Stupidity and bigotry knows no bounds.
    @Bustingtheskullofidiots
Unfortunately we did vote in Harper who is a conservative like Bush. However, it is working against him (his party is not increasing in the polls). The more body bags that come home from Afghanistan themore it guarantees that he will be ousted in the next election. I guess this is how we differ with the USA as Canadians won’t tolerate this.

  12. @MacBill:

I just came back from a dealerthat distributes Apple products (CompuSmart), and they were sold out. The salesperson told me they sell out within a week of receiving them.

I’m all for being sceptical about what you read, but to call a person a liar, I usually do some research first.

  13. Coolfactor is a paid astroturfer. Not by Microsoft but by The Labels.

A Law that includes canceling downloading has been drawn up but not yet passed. It probably won’t be passed no matter how much cash The Labels throw at the law makers because we have a minority government that couldn’t pass water after a chug-a-lug contest.

  14. Apple TV works great with HandBrake – it’s smokin! I just converted a couple of Video_TS folders and the quality is excellent on my 4 year old Sony Vega with component inputs. No more shufflin scratched DVD’s.

I’ll probaly install the 160 GB hard drive.

  15. It isn’t theft, you moron. Read before you open your frigging mouth and sound off on something you know nothing about. We pay a tax on every blank recording medium we purchase to cover royalties. The next time you call someone a thief, think twice then STFU.

  16. Carbon Computing, the dealer quoted, is a first class reseller.
I’ve got no reason to doubt what they have to say. They’ve been supporting the Mac long before the iPod, and are one of the best retail stores Apple has, and the first choice of many Advertising and other businesses who are longtime Mac users.
Carbon is much better than the Apple corporate stores that
have opened in Toronto in the last year or so.
