MacDailyNews announces site redesign

MacDailyNews is happy to announce a redesigned interface for MacDailyNews.com and iPodDailyNews.com. Our code (and our look, we hope you agree) have now been cleaned up!

The design was created by the MacDailyNews team, with the main idea being: clean up around here, but keep it familiar!

We’ve also transitioned to a fixed-width site due to the large varieties and sizes of monitor sizes available today. Now MDN and iPodDN will be consistent regardless of monitor width; the sites stretched across larger monitors just didn’t work visually.

The new code was done by the crew at Solspace, a full-service web shop that has recently expanded to offering add-on software for ExpressionEngine, the powerful software platform behind MDN and iPodDN. The sites are hosted at EngineHosting, who provide rock-solid hosting power for ExpressionEngine based sites.

With a clean code base now in place, we look forward to adding new features on an on-going basis.

As always, please tell us what you think and what you’d like to see in the way of new features.

Thank you for visiting MacDailyNews and iPodDailyNews!

  1. I like the new layout, clean and refreshing.
What is the width of the fixed layout? I have to make a new site but I don’t know what is the best width for common usage.
The last site I did was 700 wide but that seems to small these days.
    Thanks

  2. hey MDN, how about losing the ContentLink ads?

they’re just annoying. and does anyone here really want to buy the random miscellaneous stuff behind those links? seriously!

your other ads on the page are fine, but the ContentLink ones have to go, they really make your otherwise fine site trashy looking

  3. Hi MDN – I too want to congratulate you on the site’s updated look. You did a really nice job. The text is much more crisp. I also like the way you organized the Archives section. It seems easier to find past articles.

I too wouldn’t mind a way to check spelling – when using my work Dell laptop 🙁

Keep up the great work. And thanks!

    Peace.

  4. It’s sooooo web 2.0, which is soooo 2005-ish.

All texts are too close to its borders, have wider margins. It looks like the typeface is a bit too big here and there/ The overall feel is better I reckon, but there’s no attention to detail.
eg: “where mac comes first touches is going out of box”, the typeface in “Name” box touches top line but has big space at the bottom.

I know it’s all easy to tweak with css, it just takes a bit more time to make it better because at the moment it’s like those geeky PC websites out there.

Sure you can ignore my comment, and be content with all praises. But remember the old saying: criticism is more worthy than a thousand praises.

  5. I preferred the previous look.
    – smaller font size.
    – better line spacing.
    – where is the post editing?

    I don’t call this a v4.0 upgrade. More like a 3.6759b
(I’m sure they’ll tweak small things like this ugly comments form)

MW: average… go figure. An average upgrade.
