Rogue Amoeba’s audio editor Fission debuted seven months ago and provided lossless editing of MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, and AIFF audio files. Fission has been upgraded to version 1.5 and brings with it several major new features.
With version 1.5, Fission now has full audio insertion support, allowing audio to be copied and pasted in a single file or between multiple files. Files can also be merged with a simple drag and drop from the Finder. The new Gain Adjustment feature allows the volume of any file to be manually increased or decreased. Fission even sports full support for cue sheet files.
The Full Fission 1.5 feature list:

– Combine audio from other files and between audio formats
– Drag and drop files to append to existing audio
• Increase and decrease gain of audio selections
• Full support for cue sheets
• Auto-complete in Inspector fields
• Added Zoom to Selection command

• Several minor bugs fixed
Aimed at the consumer market, Fission costs just $32. Users can also save by purchasing in a bundle with Audio Hijack Pro for just $50. Fission 1.5 is a free update for previously registered users.
Fission is immediately available as a free trial for Mac OS X 10.4. Fission is fully functional, but will degrade the quality of audio saved while in trial mode.

I appreciate it. I’m a pod-caster. A disproportionate number of pod-casters – of whom there are tens, or even hundreds, of thousands – are Mac users. So, we are interested in this editor. Maybe Garageband 4 will have these editing tools built in, but the editing suite is a bit weak in GB3. Oh, there are some wonderful tools – the auto-fade feature is great and the auto-filters are great – but that doesn’t offer the greatest finess for eliminating a single “uuuh” from your recorded track.
To hear how tightly I edit my tracks, check out my podcast, using the link in my .sig – it is in iTunes’ Performing Arts subcategory and you may not be interested in the specific content. However, I don’t believe you can edit this closely with GB3. I currently use Amadeus II for this process – which re-encodes my AAC soundtracks, reducing quality a bit.

do Macs still come bundled with Sound Studio? That app — while a little bulky — has been my quick and dirty audio editor for 5 years now. Doesn’t work with MP3 though …

In this particular case, my – MY – work is very much on-topic. Both regarding the use of the software in question and to answer a question regarding the validity of posting about the upgrade.

Either ignore the link or stay off the site until you grow pubic hair. Most sites like this offer a) personal accounts and b) a utility to create a .sig – or a selection.
