“If you’re shopping for a 17-inch laptop computer, you can choose one that only runs Windows or you can choose one that runs both Windows and Mac OS X,” Al Fasoldt reports for The Syracuse Post-Standard.
Fasoldt reports, “That was an easy decision for me. My wife and I needed a more powerful Windows laptop for our Technofile Workshops, one that would run photo-editing software at the fastest speeds possible. We also needed a Mac OS X laptop that could supplement our current one. The one we’ve been using has a smallish screen, so we wanted to get a new laptop with a 17-inch display.”
“Mac OS X is Apple’s operating system for all its computers. Mac OS X computers are more reliable than Windows PCs, have no active viruses or spyware at all, and come with family-friendly software for video editing, music creation, DVD production and photo organizing. We’re been using desktop Macs along with our Mac iBook laptop for most of our computing needs for years,” Fasoldt reports.
“But, like many of you, we have many Windows-only programs we need to run, too. My old Windows laptop didn’t have enough memory or processing power for the new Windows programs we added to our collection recently, and our Windows workshop sessions needed a faster PC, too,” Fasoldt reports. “It had to be a laptop — or ‘notebook,’ as laptops tend to be called these days — so we could haul it easily to workshop classes and carry it on long trips in our motor home. And it had to be just as adept at running Mac OS X programs as Windows programs.”
Fasoldt reports, “So we bought an Apple MacBook Pro. It has a 17-inch screen, a dual-core Intel processor (which means it essentially has two CPU’s, or central processing units, in non-technical terms), and a lot of little touches that help make it a delight.”
Fasoldt reports, “I installed Windows 2000 on our new computer, using $79 software called Parallels Desktop (from http://www.parallels.com), which allows Windows to run alongside Mac OS X, and quickly realized I was sitting in front of the fastest Windows computer I’d ever used… Apple’s MacBook Pro [is] clearly a league ahead of laptops that can only run Windows. I couldn’t recommend it any more highly.”

I’d love to get rid of windows, but I have three words that say I can’t:
AutoCAD
CorelDraw
RoboHelp
this is so simple.
Apple Macbooks and Desktops run the largest volume of software on the planet. Whether it is for Windows, Mac, Solaris, Linux, OS/2, or what ever, Apple can Run it.
Can I just run OS X on one of these?
For the love of all that is holy, good and true, ditch RoboHelp.
For the sanity of everyone else in the graphics world, ditch CorelDraw.
Just use Illustrator. You’ll be saner, and the graphics you send out will be happier too.
Why run windows on it? Well for 1, Softimage is a bit tricky to get going in OS X.
Now is the wrong time to purchase a Mac Laptop.. a new processor is around the corner and the MacBook Pro is due for a revision…
For the love of God don’t use AutoCad.
Buy a drafting table and some pencils and go Old School.
Chris, the author said why. He has some windoze apps that he has to run. It was very clear in his article if you would have read it.

Finally. How long has it taken journalists to say this? None of this mamby-pamby “not as many viruses” or “not as much spyware”. While I’m thrilled to finally see an unequivocal statement the lack of viruses and spyware, it certainly has taken a hell of a long time!
CorelDraw?

What does CorelDraw do that Illustrator or Freehand can’t. I have a limited knowledge of CorelDraw.

As a prepress professional I dread seeing a CorelDraw job come in. What a pain-in-the a##!
Now if the very few Pagemaker users would switch to InDesign life would be good.
I’ve used CorelDraw for 12 years. I like it. I’ve used Illustrator. I hate Illustrator. I find it’s controls counter-intuitive and difficult to use. Bottom line . . .with CorelDraw, I can work quickly and generate the graphical output I’m trying to get. And when I output, I can got to PDF or .ps or .eps just like with Illustrator. Only it’s less painful to get to that point.
I work in an industry that has 15+ years of engineering work done in AutoCAD. That’s my source material. I guess I’m just supposed to change a whole industry all by myself because I don’t like Windows? Get real.
And RoboHelp? Please tell me a package that allows one to create interactive help, NOT web pages that are supposed to FUNCTION as help, but real, honest-to-god help systems . . . other than RoboHelp. Please. Do. I’d love to try them. No, really. I’d give something else a chance if I knew of one.
How about Mac OS X, Linux (and Oracle XE!), Windows, and Rhapsody DR2 (for Intel) ?
