Apple: Why stop at just one iPod?

Apple Store“Who needs more than one iPod? A tiny Shuffle, midsize Nano and cavernous video iPod might look cool lined up in a row, but there’s little practical reason to purchase multiple units,” Rachel Rosmarin reports for Forbes.

Rosmarin reports, “Even so, Apple thinks once you’re in its retail stores, you’ll cave to the soft sell. In recent weeks, signs have gone up in Apple stores asking shoppers, “Why stop at just one?” Apple has not acknowledged the new marketing campaign, or responded to calls asking if it will spread to their Web site and other advertising, but sharp-eyed bloggers have snapped photos of them in stores.”

“Even though iPod sales may be softening, the company’s still on track to beat–by a long shot–the 8.53 million iPods it sold in the second quarter of last year. The average analyst estimate for how many iPods Apple will sell in the same quarter this year is 10.9 million,” Rosmarin reports.

Rosmarin reports, “And market research firm iSuppli says the personal media player market still has a lot of growth left in it. The company forecasts 216.9 million media player shipments in 2007, up from 178.1 million in 2006. By 2011, more than 268.6 million units should ship. Apple is also poised to maintain its 70% market share…”

We know many iPod owners who use an iPod nano/iPod shuffle for running and working out and take their video-capable iPods on the road.

  1. I used to have 5 iPods, but I gave one away. I have a 1G iPod that I bought the very first day the iPod was ever released and I was the only person I knew who had an iPod for the first year or two. A 4G photo iPod. A 2G nano and a 2G shuffle. I gave away my 1G shuffle.

  2. Daughter 1 had Pod 1 — a Mini
    Daughter 2 had Pod 2 — a Nano
Dad had Pod 3 — a 30gb Pod with video
    Daughter 1 had Pod 4 — a clip-on Shuffle

    Argh, where will it end?!

    Well, actually with Partner.

Who can’t cope with tech or ear buds, so is out of the loop.

    My bank account loves her.

  3. I have a 80GB for my main music and some tv shows (some from iTMS, most from eyeTV), a nano with nike adapter contains my running music and podcasts. Everybody else in my extended family has an iPod of various models; no one besides me needs or wants another.

Btw, my oldest son is still happily using his original 1G 5GB clickwheel iPod. It’s original battery is still working fine with about 2.5-3 hours play per charge. This one item is testimony that Apple got it right, the first time and we weren’t fools for buying 1st gen.

  4. I’m onto three too.

Original 5gb purchased on week 1, a 40gb photo purchased on the hour they were released and a 2nd gen shuffle. I didn’t see the need for the shuffle when it was first released but now on a daily basis it’s used more than the others. The photo is used for weekends away or in the car and the original one for kudos on the london underground.

Actually it’s four if you include the nano I bought for my girlfriend.

Now waiting for the 80 gig touchscreen video for no.5 …

  5. I first Started Out with a 1st Gen iPod Shuffle 1GB, later I bought a 2nd Gen Silver iPod Mini 4GB.

Use the Shuffle will on a rush and use the mini on occasion. 8 months later I sold the Mini a few $ more than what I paid for on eBay. And I bought a New 2nd Gen 4GB Silver iPod Nano.

I now have that silver Nano and the Original iPod shuffle. I use the nano for occasion and I use the shuffle when I’m on the go where the nano is more likely to get damaged.

It’s like a car. Use the old Ford for work. Then Use the New Lincoln on the Weekend

  6. Who needs to own more than, at most, 2 iPods at any given time? Those of you with 4-5 iPods, I can recommend a lot of worthy charities that could really benefit from kind of expendable income you obviously have,

  7. I own: 60Gb IPod video and 1Gb Nano

    Wife own’s: 30Gb iPod video 5.5G and a 4 Gb green Mini.

    in the family;

    cousin 1; 30Gb iPod video
    cousin 2: 30Gb iPod video
cousin 3: 4Gb iPod mini (blue)

Sister in Law: 4Gb iPod mini
Sister in Law: 4Gb iPod mini

hmmm..that’s all I can think of for now.

  8. Son 1: Nano 4 Gb
    Son 2: Shuffle 1 Gen 1 Gb
Wife: Nano 2 Gb 1 Gen with iTrip in the Car
    Me: Green Nano, 80 Gb Video,Mini 4Gb, 40 Gb 4 th Gen

    – and all are Random used every single Day

…….ups – and waiting for iPhone

  9. I had 3, and gave the Shuffle away to an MP3-player-less friend. I had the 4th gen big iPod, but it sometimes froze when I exercised and I worried about the little drive mashing up. So I got the nano just for the gym. If they come out with the touchscreen iPod, my husband will make that his 2nd.
