RUMOR: Apple to release Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard in June

Apple Store“Apple is currently planning to release Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard in June, mostly likely at or around its Worldwide Developers Conference, reliable sources report,” Think Secret reports.

“The release will come at the tail end of spring, which ends June 21, enabling Apple to meet its original shipping estimate,” Think Secret reports.

Think Secret reports, “‘Leopard is shaping up to be a more significant release than anyone expected, with much more to come than any of the developer builds have led on,’ one source said.”

“Also scheduled for a June release now are new versions of Apple’s iLife and iWork suites, which will pack extensive Leopard-dependent features. Sources say Apple continues to toy with the idea of bundling one or both suites with the new operating system free of charge in an effort to further play up the extra value and features Mac OS X offers over Microsoft’s new Windows Vista,” Think Secret reports.

  1. “I always thought that was kinda dumb anyway.”

Well, it forced Apple to put out new versions every year, which is great.

At this point, I think they think Pages, Keynote and Spreadsheets will be so good, they can take a couple years off on new versions… That just doesn’t sound right.. Their Excel app will need annual updates. Keynote can chill out for a while, and Pages will be nice after the 2007 update.

  2. “Let the bitching about slipped ship dates begin”

My ass. They’re releasing iPhone on June 11th.. how can they release OS X at the same damn time!.. It’ll be overshadowed… This is idiotic..

Release OS X sometime in May so it gets the attention it deserves..

  3. Don’t hold your breath for a bundle. Leopard will sell millions of copies, and iLife will be purchased by those same customers if there are enough features (I’m guessing there will be, especially features that take advantage of Leopard).

iWork will also be a stand-alone package, especially if Apple adds a spreadsheet app. Apple may offer a combo update for iLife and iWork, but that’s not real likely either.

  4. This is consistent with Apple’s painful painfully slow release cycle. No solid Mac-related releases so far in 2007. This must be a paradigm shift that better make our jaws drop. Nothing else could justify it. No one sees June as spring, even if the calendar disagrees. This is a snails pace reminiscent of Microsoft. Hell, the more we wait, the more it feels like everything’s going to happen for the 2007 holiday season. I can’t stand waiting. Can you tell?

You mean you have never tried iWork?

Mate, Pages is fantastic. I would never use Word over Pages.

Pages is so much more intuitive. Better designed, less bloated yet pretty damn powerful. For example. To do a mail merge in word, unless the yhave changed it you need to put your contacts in an Excel Spreadsheet and merge from there. In Pages all you do is create a letter with contact data in it. Select a few recipients from your Apple address book and drag and drop them onto the address column. You then choose either multiple documents so you an edit and personalise the details or choose send to printer and it will just print copes fr each contact with teh same document details.

I really can’t see what Word can do for an average user over Pages. And forget about the Macro languages and VBA. What’s the point when it will only work with te Office suite. Pages is fully AppleScriptable.

I have a Phlink at home I could get Pages to compose a fax and send it from my mobile phone if I could be bothered to learn the Apple script required.

Now Keynote. Jobs had that developed so he could do his keynotes with more flair and style because PowerPoint is pure schizz. Jobs gets accolades for his presentation abilities. Gates gets commiserations for his pathetic style.

What do you mean one or both?……The iLife suite is part of OS X already. WTF?

  7. If Apple wants to attract defectors from Vista, they should start including iWork with new Macs, like they do with iLife. With a spreadsheet app in there, plus maybe a few other missing pieces (can anyone say “decent photo editor?”), they could have an even more attractive package.

Something wrong with your current Mac-related products? Why is a release necessary?
